Marina Bay Sands Hotel

March 28, 2011

As promised, here are some photos of the room we had at the Marina Bay Sands Hotel. The room size is Atrium Deluxe, with a city view. In my opinion, in the day time, the sea view looks better. Luckily for us, there was no haze and the blue expanse of water was just amazing. It’s too glaring to be looking at the office buildings in Shenton Way during the day time. However, come night time, the roles are reversed. Shenton Way is lit up and makes for really good photos. If you take the city view, you get to enjoy the water show right in your own room at 8pm. But if you take the sea view, you might just be able to catch the sunrise. Take your pick. Whatever the choice, you still can enjoy 360 degree views up at the SkyPark. And don’t forget to ask for early check-in and late check-out to maximise your stay!

Rooms: As you can see from the pictures above, the rooms are pretty luxurious! The place looked clean and the decor was modern and soothing. Everything just looks bright and inviting! The bed faces the TV, while the sofa faces the business table. The room size we got was also larger than what I would expect of a normal room in any hotel in Singapore. I found out later that the higher you go, the small the room sizes become. The rooms at the really low floors even have a sort of dining area and perhaps even balconies! Of course the lower floors are nearer to the roads and expressway. It’s a damn good marketing/strategic decision to design the rooms this way I think, then you don’t have to bother with numerous price ranges. Like my colleague with his 9 other friends, they chose the lower floor so that all 10 of them could fit in the room, even though they were originally assigned one of the highest floors. Btw, there wasn’t a bathtub in the room that I got!

Service: Don’t expect stellar service. The staff that we encountered were all pretty aloof. They weren’t rude, but they made no effort to be particularly friendly. They just did their job. You were just another guest, another statistic to them, to be processed. And indeed, the hotel is so big, it just doesn’t exude the homely feeling. The lobby area spans the entire 3 towers. Everyone is just rushing one way or the other. As you can well imagine, there are lots of visitors  who just want to gawk at the place, who aren’t actually staying at the hotel itself.

When I think of the really personal treatment I received at Conrad Singapore, the difference is tremendous. At Conrad Singapore, every staff tries to go out of their way to make your stay wonderful, and they look genuine about. Till today, whenever we happen to be at the Conrad Lobby, this guy Roy still remembers us, greets us and offers to help us, even though we are just passing through. Marina Bay Sands Hotel has the "wow" factor, and I would definitely encourage you to stay there at least once. The stay is definitely enjoyable. However, I can imagine if I were a business visitor from a foreign country having to visit Singapore often, I would rather stay at Conrad than at Marina Bay Sands cuz after a while, the novelty will disappear and what you yearn for would be familiarity and a family feeling.

  1. The views are nice. Service could be better though. It’s not 5 star service like the Conrad or Marina Mandarin.

    • Ya the service is not that great. The girl manning the registration counter had her mind on something else. And the whole place doesn’t give you the homely feeling. The Conrad people are eager to please and genuine about it. Service-wise, Conrad wins hands down.
