River Palace Chinese Restaurant at Riverview Hotel

August 6, 2012

Haven’t posted about dining at a Chinese Restaurant in a long time, so I thought this would be a good time to post about River Palace Chinese Restaurant, lest you readers out there think that I only eat potato!

I haven’t dined in a posh looking Chinese restaurant for a while so it was quite nice to be invited by Riverview Hotel to sample their new Chinese menu last month.

I like the decor of the place. It looks suitably Chinese, without being too Cheena, if you know what I mean.

River Palace Chinese Restaurant - Fish Fillet in thick broth (1)

Fish Fillet in thick broth $18

First up on the menu was this delicious fish fillet broth. The fish fillets had a very tender and smooth texture while the soup tasted really rich and nourishing. I loved it that the fish was covered in a starchy batter. Even though that makes it slightly more unhealthy, it made for nice eating. I could imagine ordering a bowl of this soup, together with some white rice and having a really nice lunch.

The pork chops were really tender and weren’t stringy at all. Also enjoyed the slightly sticky sauce which made for a very unique taste.

River Palace Chinese Restaurant - Steamed Cod Fish with Chilli Garlic & Plum Sauce

Cod is one of my favourite fish and I thoroughly enjoyed this dish.

River Palace Chinese Restaurant - BBQ Whole Squid (4)

 BBQ Whole Squid $36

The BBQ Whole Squid was a feast for the eyes. I liked the texture of the squid, it was cooked just right so that the squid wasn’t rubbery. However, I would have liked a stronger BBQ flavour. Guess it was a little toned down as there is a special chilli dip on the side to go with the squid.

River Palace Chinese Restaurant - Chef Signature Braised Vermicelli with Seafood

This dish was very light tasting and full of diced seafood. A bit more broth and a bit more oomph in the broth would have made it perfect.

River Palace Chinese Restaurant - Chilled Sour Plum Jelly with Fresh Fruits

Chilled Sour Plum Jelly with Fresh Fruits $6

I was a little apprehensive about this dessert. Sour plum jelly just didn’t sound like something I would like. Interestingly, it was very palatable. It was somewhat sour, but had just enough sweetness to overcome the sourness. The jelly is soft, so you could even ”drink” it up if given a straw. The sweet fruits also complimented the sour plum jelly very well. I am told that this sour plum jelly is very good for health and can help to reduce heatiness. Well all the more reason to eat more! The chocolate stick was also a nice touch and I had 2!

    • Hey Jesslyn,
The soup is definitely a MUST TRY!!! And it is quite filling too.
The cod fish and the pork chop was also very good, but not necessarily a must try if you are not a fan of cod fish or pork chop.
The squid a bit too mild for me, but you may like it.
So, in conclusion, I would definitely recommend the soup. And order the cod fish and pork chop if you like these dishes.
