Pan Pacific Hai Tien Lo’s revamped dim sum buffet

Pan Pacific Singapore’s renown Cantonese restaurant Hai Tien Lo has recently refreshed its dim sum buffet menu, so if you’re looking to indulge in multiple servings of dim sum, you might just want to check out Hai Tien Lo. The dim sum list isn’t very extensive, however there are also numerous main course type dishes to choose from, as well as special dishes. The special dishes are a must order because they are things like Mini Buddha Jumps over the Wall, and braised abalone. The pricing for the dim sum buffet, especially on the weekends seems relatively more affordable than other dim sum buffets from comparable hotels, based on my recollection.

The dim sum dishes I tried were all very good. I think you won’t go wrong with any dim sum dish that you order because this is certainly one of Hai Tien Lo’s expertise. Although the main dishes we tried were all good too, if I had to pick one, I would definitely recommend the poached sliced pork belly with shredded ginger in fish bone broth. The pork slices were melt in the mouth tender, and the fish bone broth was of the type of broth where you want to just keep drinking it because its richly flavoursome and nourishing.

For the desserts, go for the Chilled homemade bean curd with imperial swiftlet’s nest. The beancurd is not the old school type, if you know what I mean. And it has birds nest, so it’s self explanatory why you have to order this right? Also go for the Chilled osmanthus jelly with quail’s egg and maltose. It’s really light and with a nice fragrance, so it’s a fitting end to a heavy meal, unless of course you still have stomach space for a heavier dessert.

Strong Flour–Super delicious hand-made fresh pasta that gave me sleepless nights

It’s relatively easy to get good pasta these days. Just walk into an authentic Italian restaurant, and you’re quite likely to be able to get a good meal there for a reasonable price of about 20 dollars or so per pasta dish.

So when I tell you that I recently found an amazing restaurant serving great pasta, it means that this place really stands out from the crowd! It’s this place called Strong Flour, which opened in March 2017. It’s a small little cafe/restaurant at Katong V Mall, opened by the same people that run Group Therapy Cafe and Scoop Therapy, also located in the same mall.

So what’s so mind-blowing about the pasta? First up, they make all their pasta by hand. You can actually see them churning out the pasta using a hand-cranked pasta machine at the open kitchen next to the entrance. So not only is fresh pasta made by hand, it’s made just a short while prior to cooking. If you’ve only ever eaten dried pasta all your life, you need to try fresh pasta. The bite, and the flavour is just sensational. It’s why the Italians just need a few simple ingredients to adorn the pasta, because seriously with fresh pasta, you could almost eat it on its own.

Unagiya Ichinoji–First unagi speciality restaurant from Japan to open in Singapore!

Yes, Man Man Japanese Unagi Restaurant and Uya Japanese Unagi Restaurant are both Singapore brands, but Unagiya Ichinoji is the first unagi restaurant hailing from Japan to open in Singapore! If you are a fan of unagi and simply can’t get your fill, you might just want to check out Unagiya Ichinoji.

Unagiya Ichinoji is opened by Miyagawa Honten, which is one of Tokyo’s most well-known unagi restaurants, with a history spanning 125 years. Miyagawa Honten operates 20 outlets in Japan, and its outlet in Meguro-ku Tokyo has recently been awarded Bib Gourmand in Michelin Guide Tokyo 2018. Unagiya Ichinoji is its first foray overseas.

So what’s the difference between the unagis? According to the media release, the unagis aka eels are first steamed then grilled. The sweet basting sauce (tare) is from a recipe that has been passed down for 4 generations.  I personally have not tried Uya, but I have tried Man Man Japanese Unagi. I would say that Man Man’s unagi have a crisper exterior, and a light and flaky interior. Unagiya Ichinoji’s unagi is firmer to the bite and less crispy.

The following are the various preparation methods we tried. You should go for the preparation method which best suits you. Ie, go for the Seiro Mushi if you want something really light, and go for the Mamushi Donburi if you want something with stronger flavours. The Hitsumabushi is kinda like the all-rounder to me.

White Asparagus season again at Marriott’s Pool Grill

Is it White Asparagus season again??? Because if so, it’s time to eat more while it’s still available! If you love green asparagus, you will love the milder, sweeter and more tender white asparagus even more. If you don’t love green asparagus, why then you will change your mind after you’ve had the white version! Might I also add that asparagus is high in antioxidants, B vitamins and iron? Btw they are white simply due to the growing process where they are covered fully in the dark and hence they lack chlorophyll.

Verde Kitchen at Hilton Singapore–Superfoods that taste great!

Now here’s a new cafe that is all about wholesome and healthy eating that you ought to check out, especially if you’re in the Orchard area. I’ll be upfront, the prices are on the high end, but because the ingredients used are of high quality (more on that later), and the food tastes great, you do get what you pay for.

The 32-seater Verde Kitchen is tucked away in a corner of the 2nd floor of Hilton Singapore, but it’ll be worth your while to go hunt it down. The menu features healthy dishes, including gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and raw food options. 98% of the menu items are made from scratch in-house everyday and 60% of the seafood is sustainably sourced. If you want to get your fill of superfoods such as wakame, kale, pomegranate, avocado and tumeric, you’ll find it here.

The following are some of the dishes I tried during the media tasting. Be sure to scroll all the way to the end to see their luscious desserts. Until now I’m still wondering how a chia seed pudding could taste so nice.
