The Gourmet Bakery Cafe

Today, I finally did something I hadn’t done in 4 months. I dragged myself to the gym. Technically speaking, I’ve set foot into Fitness First a number of times in those 4 months, but it was always to use the pool. Today was a momentous occasion, I finally hit the machines. To proof how rusty I was, I clean forgot to take my mp3 player with me, and I forgot to get the free workout clothes and had to turn back for them.

A colleague once sent me an article which I found to be very useful. You can read the full article here. To cut the gist, the article says that you shouldn’t set goals. You should set systems instead. Have a system in place that will eventually help you reach your goals.

Today, I brought my gym gear out. However, after the heavy media tasting at Bay Hotel and a looming headache, I was just about ready to hop into a taxi so as to reach my bed earlier. But thanks to what I learnt in the article, I told myself that I have to at least make it to the cafe next to the gym. After I’ve had my coffee at the cafe, if I still don’t feel up to it, I can allow myself to go home. Turns out that once I’d completed the half hour journey to the cafe, it was easy peasy to just pop into the gym after the coffee. So I think I know what I’m going to do from now on. I’m going to trick myself into going to the gym by going to the cafe! How having those milky coffees is going to help me lose weight is another story, but one step at a time folks!

So I guess what’s left of this post is to post about the cafe itself right?

The Gourmet Bakery Cafe (2)

This is the Gourmet Bakery Cafe, tucked in a very secluded corner of Millenia Walk. It’s actually next to the Promenade MRT entrance, but few people use that station during off-peak hours, so the traffic flow isn’t that great. Fitness First is just 1 escalator up. Interestingly, Fitness First has its own little drink area with magazines too. While it’s nice to have it, I’ve always wondered about the purpose of providing sprite and coke there. Kind of defeats the purpose of going to the gym right?

The Gourmet Bakery Cafe (3)

I only had a Cafe Mocha $5.50. It was pretty okay. Coffee was rather substantial so I didn’t manage to finish it. I enjoyed the peaceful half hour I had there. They have a few magazines for you to while away the time if necessary, but no girly magazines as you can see from the picture above.

The Gourmet Bakery Cafe (5)

Other than drinks, they do mainly sandwiches, wraps and salads.

The Gourmet Bakery Cafe The Gourmet Bakery Cafe (4)

That’s all folks! Shall blog more about The Gourmet Bakery Cafe if I make it to the gym again! OMG I just realised they have a 10% discount for Fitness First members if you order food! Hahaha luckily I only ordered coffee or I would have missed out on the discount!

Dann’s Daily Pescetarian Cafe Revisited

Dann’s Daily has added new stuff to their menu, yippee!!!!!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - New Menu

There’s quite a few interesting things on the menu like the Eggs & Toasts, Fish & Mushroom Cheese Wholewheat Tortilla Wrap and the Mushroom Beet Burger to name a few. The Chef’s mood of the day is due to become a permanent mood!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - Whitefish mushroom cheese wholewheat wrap

When I spied the Fish & Mushroom Cheese Wholewheat Wrap $9 on the menu, I knew I just had to try it, even though I already had lunch! This was 4pm, so it’s snack time lah! It looked a little plain and very flat at 1st glance!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - Whitefish mushroom cheese wholewheat wrap

But when you prise it open, behold the goodies inside!!! Mmmmmm!!!!! LOVE the white fish and how it goes with the mushroom and cheese. It was oozy juicy goodness. It’s a great thing that Dann’s Daily likes to experiment with spices, cuz there’s more to seasoning than just salt! Since the tortilla was toasted to a crisp, it felt a little like eating fish and mushroom cheese pizza. Love it that it doesn’t taste like whole wheat at all!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - Fish Mushroom Cheese Toastie

Another of my all time favourites, the toastie. The filling is exactly the same as the wrap, but panini bread is used instead. This is slightly less messy to eat, but equally fantastic in taste. Also slightly cheaper at $5. It’s for the toasties and latte that we keep coming back!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - (5)

Closer look at the oozy goodness. Seriously good stuff, and it’s HEALTHY!!!!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - Cafe Latte

Xing of Dann’s Daily told us that they have changed their coffee beans to one that gives off a slightly less acidic and more chocolatey flavour. Didn’t manage to get a picture of the one we had on Sunday but here’s a picture of the latte I had some months back. If you want to know where to find the best latte in eastern Singapore (Bedok, Siglap, Tampines, Marine Parade), you won’t go wrong with Dann’s Daily. I assure you, I’m not paid for making this statement.

Fisherman’s Market Seafood Buffet Restaurant

*Media Invite*

Normally, the only place where you can gorge on unlimited servings of seafood is at hotel buffets. Introducing the new Fisherman’s Market Seafood Buffet Restaurant. Need I describe more what they specialise in? Fisherman’s Market has its origins in Kobe and Yokohama, and this is it’s very 1st restaurant outside of Japan. The seafood buffet spread boasts over 90 dishes made with the freshest seafood flown from South Asia, Australia and around the world. The dishes include freshly made sushi, fresh oysters, sashimi, chilli crabs, bouillabaisse and more. Check out the photos from the wonderful evening my friend and I had.

Fisherman's Market (13) Fisherman's Market (26)

The restaurant is huge! This is but 1/4 of the restaurant seating area that you are seeing! As it’s located on the 2nd floor of Central, if you snag a seat by the window, you get to enjoy views of Clarke Quay and the Singapore River. There’s also a part of the restaurant that faces the huge ERP gantry. I don’t think I would want to sit close to that area, but just for laughs you definitely have to take a picture of it.

Fisherman's Market (29) Fisherman's Market - Sushi  Fisherman's Market (11)

The sushi and sashimi counter is definitely my favourite station in the entire restaurant. I have a soft spot for sashimi and sushi so I was quite happy to spend my energies on gorging on these tasty morsels. The fish served really is very fresh tasting and a feast for the eyes.

Fisherman's Market (10)

There was a whole oyster station complete with chef shucking the oysters right in front of you.

Fisherman's Market (31)

Fisherman's Market (30)

Can give these 2 items a miss. The soft shell crab was very oily while the hot dog was nothing spectacular. Save your stomach space for the more “expensive” items. I wasn’t expecting much obviously, and I only tried these so that I could comment about them. The good thing though is that they only cook after you’ve selected what you want, hence the little clips on the plate. There’s also beef and pork teppanyaki to choose from but I didn’t as those would have filled me up completely.

Fisherman's Market (35)

Don’t bother with this cheese fondue. We thought it’d be fun to order one, and it was fun. Taste-wise, to be frank, the cheese mixture didn’t really have a cheese flavour.

Fisherman's Market (34) Fisherman's Market (2)-tile

Wide array of raw and cooked food. Check out the escalator in the 4th photo. You have to take the escalator from the ground floor to get to the restaurant on the 2nd floor.

Fisherman's Market (18)-tile

The crabs were a little too small for my liking. I found it hard to prise the limited bits of flesh out of the shell. The sushi and oysters on the other hand were very good.

Fisherman's Market (15)-horz

Big succulent prawns for the prawn lover.

Fisherman's Market (6)

Salmon, one of my favourite fish!

Fisherman's Market (8)

There’s a lot of cooked seafood to choose from if you’re not into raw seafood. The cooked prawns were really nice, and they’re peeled open so you don’t have to fiddle with the shells. There’s even seafood pasta.

Fisherman's Market (20)

Fisherman's Market (32)

Fisherman’s Market has a few selections of wine for those who like to enjoy their food with wine. I happen to be one such person, tee hee hee. And it’s strange that only a few years ago, I didn’t really like to drink at all. How the taste buds change with age. Take note that the wine is at extra charge.

Fisherman's Market (37)

A surprising find at the restaurant. Soft-serve ice cream!!! I thought nothing of the ice-cream machine at first, until my friend brought back a cup of this creamy goodness. It’s really nice! I may sound deprived but I’ve never had this at 7-11 before, and it doesn’t taste the same as McDonalds. This ice cream here is sweeter and light. Really just the thing I wanted to end off my meal at Fisherman’s Market. I had 3 cups of the soft serve ice cream, can you believe it!

Fisherman's Market (36)

Free flow of soft drinks and tea/coffee, but not for the wine (obviously!)

Fisherman's Market

Here’s the pricing and full menu of Fisherman’s Market Seafood Buffet Restaurant. If you’re a seafood fan and you want to gorge on a full range of fresh seafood, here’s the place to come to. It’s a casual restaurant so there’s no need to dress up like you have to at the hotel restaurants. The place is quite convenient too, just above the Clarke Quay MRT station. Perfect for chilling out with your favourite pals. Only issue is, I do find the pricing to be a tad expensive, and for $10-$20 more, I would prefer to go to a hotel restaurant on a weekend.

*A big thank you to Ms Amanda Tan of Word of Mouth Communications for the kind invite!

The Queen & the Mangosteen

I think I might have mentioned before that I have a soft spot for cafes and restaurants with quirky names? Tell me if you don’t think that the Queen & the Mangosteen sounds cool. The Queen & Mangosteen is a modern interpretation of the quintessential British gourmet pub with a whimsical flourish. Rumour has it that the mangosteen was reputedly Queen Victoria’s favourite fruit. Hey whaddya know, the mangosteen is my favourite fruit too!!!

There’s something about a place being known as a “pub”. I think in the Singaporean culture, we think of pubs as sleazy places where good people don’t go to. It’s not the same case in the UK. After watching Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay on TV, I’ve come to realise that families can go down to the pub for dinner. It just happens to be a place where you can also get alcoholic drinks.

Ah well, despite me saying that I like quirky names, this is only the 2nd time that I’ve been to the Queen & the Mangosteen. The 1st time being just after they opened a few years ago. Do you recall before this, in its place was Corduroy Cafe? I loved going to the Corduroy Cafe, it had such a nice ambience, and you had to walk past a long display of tasty jams and cakes! Wish the Corduroy Cafe was still around!

Anyway, my colleagues and I went down to the Queen & Mangosteen last week to celebrate someone’s birthday. After perusing the menu, most of us got the set-lunch as the prices were almost similar to the ala carte menu but with an additional soup/dessert and drink thrown in.

Queen & the Mangosteen - Coke

Free-flow of coke! Not that I need free flow coke. One glass is more than enough for me per meal.

Queen & the Mangosteen - Green Pea and Scampi Soup

Green pea and scampi soup – This was the soup of the day. Everyone chose this except for me. The soup colour may put you off, but based on the slurps and grunts of approval, everyone enjoyed the soup very much. There were chunks of scampi (prawns) in it too. Darn, I regretted not ordering this!

Queen & the Mangosteen - Fish & Chips

I had the fish and chips with their home made curry sauce. The fish is pretty good. It doesn’t taste oily and goes well with the curry dip. Only grouse is, 3 pieces isn’t really enough to fill you up if you didn’t already have the green pea soup! The fries were also very good. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.

Queen & the Mangosteen - Pot of Mussels

My colleague didn’t get the set lunch. Instead she ordered this pot of mussels in thai curry sauce with crusty bread. I managed to snag 2 mussels from her and I tell you, the broth was AMAZING! There’s a hint of Asian spice flavours to it so it’s even better than the usual mussels in wine. I could have slurped up the entire pot of broth if I’d ordered this! I bet the restaurant knows how good the broth is that is why bread is also served on the side. The mussels were also very fresh tasting to me, although it seems in the end, my colleague had to discard 5 mussels as they were unopened. I’m definitely coming back soon to try this dish again. Not cheap at $30+.

Queen & the Mangosteen - Cottage Pie

Cottage pie (beef) – Not sure how this tasted but I don’t think my colleague had any complaints.

Queen & the Mangosteen - Panna Cotta

Ok this was the ickiest thing of the lot, and alas, it was my order! Instead of having a soup from the set lunch, I chose to have the dessert of the day. It happened to be panna cotta which is something that I like. I had in mind something like this from Gunthers, but obviously Gunther’s is in a far different league. I should have known better. Even the presentation itself was a failure. Look at the icky liquid covering the sides of the glass! Well I suppose the only good thing is that if you like the flavour of this panna cotta, there is lots of it to enjoy.

Promotions

Drink until he looks cute! Don’t you think that is so cheekily creative? I’ve a good mind to gather some of my male friends for a drink now. Ha. And I’ll pay if it works.

Queen & Mangosteen

Queen & Mangosteen Seating Area

Here are some more pictures I took off the Queen & Mangosteen’s website. As you can see, there is indoor seating as well as outdoor if you so choose.

Queen & Mangosteen - Mini burgers and onion rings

I tried those mini burgers the 1st time I went there. Pretty good and definitely pretty cute.

Joe & Dough

Every time I walk pass a sandwich store or a cafe in town, I am reminded of the severely limited options available to me and my colleagues since moving to the new MapleTree Business City. Visitors to our office gush at how wonderful the place looks and how lucky we must be to have such a great view of the sea. But seriously, they are just suffering from “tourist blindness”. As you can well imagine, being a tourist in a foreign country is vastly different from actually staying put for the long term.

Joe & Dough

The other day, I happened to be in the Suntec Area and I chanced upon this sandwich place called Joe & Dough, which is right next to Carrefour. I have no idea if this place serves nice sandwiches or not, but I have a soft spot for catchy names and nice looking cafes so I’m quite keen to try this place out. Anyone know if this place is good? I checked out Joe & Dough’s menu and it seems pretty okay. Well, nowadays, anything is better than Cedele!

Not that there’s anything bad about Cedele, but I now associate Cedele with not so nice memories! Even though I used to like Cedele a lot, I am so sick of the place considering that I have been eating there several times a week! Not to mention that that’s the thing I usually have when I have to WORK LATE! This all being thanks to the location of my office.

I’m going to be on leave on Monday so I’m going to go into Shenton Way and check out the new cafes and sandwich bars there. Quite a number of cool looking ones have popped up in recent months and I really wanna see if they are any good.

Another question since we’re on the topic. What do you refer to our CBD area as? I call it Shenton Way, but obviously that’s just one of the roads there. Do you refer to the CBD area as Raffles Place?
