Salt Tapas & Bar– Surprisingly affordable brunch menu!

Salt Grill & Sky Bar has always been on my list of restaurants for special occasions thanks to the good food, exquisite presentation and amazing near 360 degree views of Singapore from the 55th floor of ION Orchard. But to dine here costs a pretty penny which is why it is reserved for special occasions. But did you know that Salt Grill & Sky Bar has a “sibling” in the form of Salt Tapas & Bar located at Raffles City shopping centre, which offers dishes at much more wallet friendly prices?

Salt Tapas & Bar is an extension of the existing “Salt” Brand by celebrated Australian Chef Luke Mangan. The menu has recently been revamped and now presents quality modern tapas with an Australian twist, at affordable prices. I am always wary about tapas places as the portions tend to be miniscule while charging full appetiser prices. Not so at Salt Tapas & Bar. Quite a number of the dishes we tried, in particular the brunch menu items, are large enough to be considered as mains. And the amazing thing is that the pricing is comparable to cafes you find in Singapore, and we are talking about food from a celebrated brand name located in the heart of town! This is probably one of the best kept secrets and I wish I’d known about it earlier!

The brunch menu is particularly worthwhile checking out for its affordable prices. For example French toast with clotted cream and Okinawa ice cream at $15, or scrambled eggs with ratatouille on toast at $15 or even the grilled sirloin with mash, salad and poached egg at $18!

PasarBella Suntec City – What to eat?

Although PasarBella touts itself as a farmer’s market, I don’t really view them as such, as there’s hardly any local produce being sold and it’s mostly eateries instead of a good mix of retail and food. But whatever the name, it’s quite enjoyable going to the PasarBella outlet at The Grand Stand (former Turf City). Guess what, they’ve now opened another outlet at Suntec City so it’s much easier for those without private transportation to get a taste of what PasarBella is like.

Pasar Bella (3)

PasarBella is located at the ground floor of Tower 1

If you’re familiar with PasarBella at The Grandstand, PasarBella at Suntec City isn’t exactly the same. The PasarBella at Suntec City is much smaller, think 1/3 the size? Also, out of the 13 stalls there, 12 are eateries. In fact, PasarBella at Suntec City strikes me more as a grungy and urban foodcourt with an overdose of graffiti laden walls and neon coloured lighting. Order from any stall that you please, collect your food and sit where you will. It’s a pricey food court though, let’s be upfront with that, be prepared to spend at least $10 for lunch there. And there’s no ubiquitous drinks stall selling canned drinks or mineral water, so that’s another $4 or so for a cup of coffee or $6 for juice.

Pasar Bella (1)

Still, I’m sure it must be packed on weekdays with office workers looking to have something different to eat, minus the fuss of deciding on a specific restaurant to go to. The food that we tried was quite good (not thinking about the price), and I would definitely like to go back again to sample more stalls.

Bedok Mall is opening on 3rd December!

*Latest Update as at 12 Dec 2013: Bedok Mall is already open and super crowded, I really wonder where the people have come from! And it feels like more than  90% of the shops are already open for business. From what I saw today, places like Starbucks, ToastBox, Tim Ho Wan, Poulet, Itacho, SK Jewellery, G2000, Charles & Keith, Faces of Spade etc are open. But FairPrice Finest will only be open on 14 Dec 2013 onwards!

Really long queues at all the popular restaurants! Eg by 6.30pm, Tim Ho Wan already had a snaking queue outside their restaurant, and by 7pm, you would have had to wait at least 15 minutes or more at Itacho sushi!

Amazing news! For those of you who are living in the East, rejoice because Bedok Mall will be opening on 3rd December! Yes, even though the mall still looks half complete, the insides must be already all spruced up and ready to invite the Christmas shoppers!

The Chop House at VivoCity

image

If you’ve ever been to the Wooloomooloo Steakhouse in Raffles City, you may be delighted to know that the same people have opened up another F&B outlet in the form of gastro-bar The Chop House. I can just imagine bosses who aren’t brave enough to fire their non-performing employees, bringing them to The Chop House and saying there’s more than 1 thing going Chop this evening. Ok, bad joke. Oh well, I tried.

This is a much more casual joint as compared to Wooloomooloo. While I loved the experience of dining in the dim, quite atas Wooloomooloo, The Chop House has a more open, see through vibe to it. Dining here won’t cause your wallet to be chopped into two either.

The Chop House - (4)-tile

The most interesting feature here, apart from the food is that The Chop House offers Singapore’s first SelfTap Beer system. A total of 5 taps are located in and around the restaurant, where customers are able to pull pints at their leisure. The great thing about this is that if you just want to drink a few sips of beer, you can go ahead to dispense yourself that amount, and be charged by the millilitre instead of pint! And if you want your beer super cold, but you are a tortoise like me and your beer always gets warm, you can simply pour a small portion, and refill again later so the beer is always icy cold! All you have to do is purchase a stored value card from the cashier for $5, top up the card with a value of your choice and tap the card against the SelfTap reader to tap away your very own beer!

What to eat at the newly renovated Suntec City?

I had a quick walk around Suntec City after dinner at BreadSociety. Have you been to the basement of Suntec City? It’s totally revamped!!! I must say it looks pretty cool now, and the space is better utilised. The mega Fountain of Wealth is still there but the main difference now is that there are cafes and eateries lining around the Fountain of Wealth, in addition to the original circle of restaurants! So double the number now, with many cafes to choose from! Don’t worry, you won’t get wet from the fountain because the original glass walls are still there.

Most of the cafes and restaurants will be familiar to you (which is a little disappointing because I would have liked to see more new names). The familiar favourites and previous restaurants that are still there include Paradise Inn, Crystal Jade, Ichiban Boshi and Muthu Curry.  Food Republic is now the new food court and sports a very open concept as compared to the previous food court which I thought was a very linear and enclosed thing. Cafes wise you have CoffeeBean Beanstro, Gelare, etc. Pack’d from the Les Amis group is new, and so is BreadTalk Cafe and All Things N’Ice, both by BreadTalk. Together with Food Republic that is also owned by BreadTalk, BreadSociety and ToastBox, it looks like the BreadTalk Group has practically taken up half of the F&B space at Suntec! With their recent grand opening of the BreadTalk Headquarters, they really are going places!

Anyway, enough of talking, and just enjoy the pictures.Oh did I mention that Carrefour is no longer, and Giant is now the supermarket of choice?
