What is open during Chinese New Year 2017?

Here’s 365days2play’s annual list of supermarkets, malls, clinics, food courts, and kopi/cafe places that are open during the CNY period! Hope you find it useful. If the supermarket or shopping centre in Orchard road is not listed here, it’s because the information is not available (yet)! Salt Tapas & Bar– Surprisingly affordable brunch menu!

Salt Grill & Sky Bar has always been on my list of restaurants for special occasions thanks to the good food, exquisite presentation and amazing near 360 degree views of Singapore from the 55th floor of ION Orchard. But to dine here costs a pretty penny which is why it is reserved for special occasions. But did you know that Salt Grill & Sky Bar has a “sibling” in the form of Salt Tapas & Bar located at Raffles City shopping centre, which offers dishes at much more wallet friendly prices?

Salt Tapas & Bar is an extension of the existing “Salt” Brand by celebrated Australian Chef Luke Mangan. The menu has recently been revamped and now presents quality modern tapas with an Australian twist, at affordable prices. I am always wary about tapas places as the portions tend to be miniscule while charging full appetiser prices. Not so at Salt Tapas & Bar. Quite a number of the dishes we tried, in particular the brunch menu items, are large enough to be considered as mains. And the amazing thing is that the pricing is comparable to cafes you find in Singapore, and we are talking about food from a celebrated brand name located in the heart of town! This is probably one of the best kept secrets and I wish I’d known about it earlier!

The brunch menu is particularly worthwhile checking out for its affordable prices. For example French toast with clotted cream and Okinawa ice cream at $15, or scrambled eggs with ratatouille on toast at $15 or even the grilled sirloin with mash, salad and poached egg at $18!

Bedok Mall is opening on 3rd December!

*Latest Update as at 12 Dec 2013: Bedok Mall is already open and super crowded, I really wonder where the people have come from! And it feels like more than  90% of the shops are already open for business. From what I saw today, places like Starbucks, ToastBox, Tim Ho Wan, Poulet, Itacho, SK Jewellery, G2000, Charles & Keith, Faces of Spade etc are open. But FairPrice Finest will only be open on 14 Dec 2013 onwards!

Really long queues at all the popular restaurants! Eg by 6.30pm, Tim Ho Wan already had a snaking queue outside their restaurant, and by 7pm, you would have had to wait at least 15 minutes or more at Itacho sushi!

Amazing news! For those of you who are living in the East, rejoice because Bedok Mall will be opening on 3rd December! Yes, even though the mall still looks half complete, the insides must be already all spruced up and ready to invite the Christmas shoppers!

Some fun facts about Bedok Mall

  • Already 100% leased
  • 200,000 sqft or approx the size of Junction 8
  • About 200 shops spread across 3 floors
  • Approx 250 carpark lots (doesn’t sound like a lot!)
  • Bedok Mall’s basement 2 is linked to Bedok MRT
  • Bedok Bus Interchange will be above the Bedok Mall
  • Bedok Residences condo will continue to be built even after Bedok Mall opens

Christmas Celebrations!

There will be a 4m Christmas tree at the basement made out of 2000, recycled plastic milk bottles bringing festive cheer to all shoppers. Don’t forget to go there to get the free lollipops, popcorn, balloons and check out the roving fairies, contortionist, Santa Claus and SNOW!

Shoppers stand to win $100,000 worth of prizes in the CAPITASTAR Star Shower Game. Goodies include umbrellas, Christmas gift wrappers and CapitaVouchers.

And save the date for 21 December when Bedok Mall will be open until 2.40am and will give away $30,000 WORTH OF CAPITAVOUCHERS to lucky shoppers!!!!!!

St Marc Café

A couple of months back, my father mentioned the opening of a new cafe at VivoCity. He’d heard about how good it was from his colleagues so he imparted the knowledge to me with much enthusiasm. I made sure to have it checked out during my next visit to VivoCity but I was not impressed by what I saw. There were quite a number of those fake plastic models of the ice creams and desserts they served, and this is something I do not associate with cafes serving good coffees and desserts! I must admit I had judged a book by its cover, but who doesn’t when choices are aplenty but money isn’t?

Then it so happened that my colleagues and I were at VivoCity after an event so we just stopped at St Marc Cafe for a quick break. I ordered a Royal Milk Tea without too much expectations. The drink turned out to be a pleasant surprise! The milk tea was unlike any other milk tea I have ever drunk in my life! It was very thick, had a bit of a caramel flavour and was just extremely delicious in taste. Unfortunately, I don’t have a picture of it as I didn’t have my DSLR with me that day, but if you ever go to St Marc Cafe, you have to try the Royal Milk Tea! If I’m not wrong it costs $6!

Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, I was kindly invited by Sixth Sense Communications to join in a media tour of the latest highlight at Marina Square : The Dining Edition. The Dining Edition is Marina Square’s new gourmet dining zone and was renovated to a tune of $15m. The 50,000 sq ft area boasts 16 exciting mid-to-upscale restaurants, bistros, café bakeries, patisseries and coffee joints and the eclectic mix is made up of both local and international brand names.

This was when I was reacquainted with St Marc Cafe again! We had the opportunity to try 2 of St Marc Cafe’s best loved items, the Choco Cro as well as the Little Fuji.

Dann’s Daily Pescetarian Cafe Revisited

Dann’s Daily has added new stuff to their menu, yippee!!!!!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - New Menu

There’s quite a few interesting things on the menu like the Eggs & Toasts, Fish & Mushroom Cheese Wholewheat Tortilla Wrap and the Mushroom Beet Burger to name a few. The Chef’s mood of the day is due to become a permanent mood!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - Whitefish mushroom cheese wholewheat wrap

When I spied the Fish & Mushroom Cheese Wholewheat Wrap $9 on the menu, I knew I just had to try it, even though I already had lunch! This was 4pm, so it’s snack time lah! It looked a little plain and very flat at 1st glance!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - Whitefish mushroom cheese wholewheat wrap

But when you prise it open, behold the goodies inside!!! Mmmmmm!!!!! LOVE the white fish and how it goes with the mushroom and cheese. It was oozy juicy goodness. It’s a great thing that Dann’s Daily likes to experiment with spices, cuz there’s more to seasoning than just salt! Since the tortilla was toasted to a crisp, it felt a little like eating fish and mushroom cheese pizza. Love it that it doesn’t taste like whole wheat at all!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - Fish Mushroom Cheese Toastie

Another of my all time favourites, the toastie. The filling is exactly the same as the wrap, but panini bread is used instead. This is slightly less messy to eat, but equally fantastic in taste. Also slightly cheaper at $5. It’s for the toasties and latte that we keep coming back!

Closer look at the oozy goodness. Seriously good stuff, and it’s HEALTHY!!!!

Dann's Pescetarian Cafe - Cafe Latte

Xing of Dann’s Daily told us that they have changed their coffee beans to one that gives off a slightly less acidic and more chocolatey flavour. Didn’t manage to get a picture of the one we had on Sunday but here’s a picture of the latte I had some months back. If you want to know where to find the best latte in eastern Singapore (Bedok, Siglap, Tampines, Marine Parade), you won’t go wrong with Dann’s Daily. I assure you, I’m not paid for making this statement.
