New Orleans Barbecue Restaurant

On the 1st evening at Genting Resorts World, we had originally wanted to get our Chinese fix at the Genting Palace Restaurant. Unfortunately, it was full and we couldn’t use our meal card there. Luckily, because I had researched on the places to eat at Genting, I quickly led the Partner to the next restaurant on my to-visit list, ie the New Orleans Barbecue Restaurant. This restaurant is located within the Casino in Maxims Genting Hotel, so kids are not allowed to dine there.

Thanks to our having to traverse half the casino to get to the New Orleans Barbecue Restaurant, I also discovered that there are parts of the Casino that are cordoned off only for non-smoking players. Yes, the rest of the casino area allows for smoking and I really do wonder how non-smokers can stay there for hours on end in the smoke! I don’t actually see many people smoking, but because it’s an enclosed area, the smoke lingers! My heart goes out to the croupiers who have no choice but to stay fixed to their tables.

New Orleans is a casual eatery where you can get your fill of steaks, chops, grills and sausages. As with all the other eateries in Resorts World, prices are slightly inflated. However, on the Saturday evening that we were there, it was nearly a full house. In fact, I have to add that all the hotels in the resort where FULL HOUSE for that evening, most likely thanks to a certain Hacken Lee having a live performance that evening.

How many times in Asia do you see me wearing a jacket. Feel like going to Cameron Highlands next to enjoy the cool weather again.

Genting Palace Chinese Restaurant

We originally wanted to try out Genting Palace for dinner on our first night at Genting Resorts World, ie Saturday. However, we were told that our meal card would not be valid because the restaurant was already pretty full! Imagine my disappointment because I was all ready to go try out some abalone and other Chinese favourites! Imagine the effort I had to make when the Partner suggested going to a Western restaurant instead. The Partner doesn’t fancy abalone you see, he thinks it’s tasteless!

Anyway, I managed to check out Genting Palace for dim sum brunch the next day. Just so that we would not be faced with another Full House, we dragged ourselves out of bed at 8am, which for me is considered a substantial feat. I’m not one to jam-pack a gazillion activities during my holidays. I like to take it slow and savour every single moment.

As with most of the eateries in Genting, Genting Palace was priced slightly on the high side, as compared to a similar restaurant in Singapore. Well I guess it’s to be expected for touristy locations.

The dim sum here is quite okay. There are several nice dishes, but also several very unremarkable dishes. An interesting point to note is that most of the dim sum that came in the metallic containers were not piping hot, which would have contributed to the average experience. Those dim sum dishes that were served piping hot were very enjoyable.

Genting Palace looks very traditional, like the Chinese restaurants of yore in Singapore.

This was one of the best dim sum dishes amongst all the stuff that we ordered. It was packed full of prawns and there was a nice oozy bit of cheese right in the middle. This came piping hot too. It seems that those dim sum served on the white dishes are made to order?

The Bakery at Maxims Genting Hotel

One of the places I liked hanging out at during my stay at Genting Resorts World was at The Bakery. I love peppering my holiday trips with visits to cafes and bakeries and the trip to Genting was no different of course. Of all the cafes that I visited or walked past, The Bakery at Maxims Genting looked the most cosy and inviting. It also had a huge array of mouth watering looking cakes and pastries, so I actually visited The Bakery a total of THREE times in my 3D2N stay. Beat that!

Of course, the FREE WIFI was another huge reason. There was no WIFI in my First World Hotel so I made sure to stop by The Bakery for my daily dose of Internet, Whatsapp.Twitter and Facebook.

Genting Outdoor Theme Park

This is going to be a series of posts from the Resorts World Genting trip I partook in last week, courtesy of the Resorts World people.

First up, pictures of the Genting Outdoor Theme Park. For the record, I have not been to Singapore’s Universal Studios. However, I have been to the Universal Studios in both California as well as Orlando. If there’s one thing about theme parks, it’s that you usually have to do a lot of lining up. If the queues are long, they might even snake out into the open, beyond the shelter of the ride’s waiting area.

Genting’s Outdoor Theme Park obviously isn’t as awesome as that of Universal Studios and Disneyland. But most people aren’t expecting that anyway. It’s just a nice little Theme Park, good for tourists looking for a short getaway. It does have the thriller roller coasters to satiate the dare devils, as well as placid family rides for the kiddos. For me, I just loved being outdoors in the cool, crisp mountain air. It’s been a while since I’ve stepped into a theme park, the last being in 2007, Gold Coast Australia’s Movie World and Dream World.

Always study the Theme Park map first so that you know how to maximise your time. Don’t want to spend half the day on something average, only to find out that you’ve missed the star attraction.

Water rides seem to make up more than 1/3 of the rides at Genting.

Hay Dairies

Did you know there is an Italian Organic dairy farm in Singapore? It’s TRUE!!! Well I tried to search for it on Monday. Vaguely remembered it to be located at Lim Chu Kang. Alas, just could not find it so to make the most of the cross country travel, we stopped by at Hay Dairies instead to see the cute goats.

TO MY HORROR, we are no longer allowed to feed or hug the goats!!!!!! I recall visiting twice previously. All we had to do was pay $2 for the goat feed, and then we are let loose amongst the pens. The goats are still within the pens but they stick their little heads out to grab at the goat feed. Apparently, AVA considers this to be a health hazard and has put in place a ban for the last THREE years! Seriously, my first thought was that we are just going way overboard with all these precautions. The lady manning the cashier ( I think she owns the place) nodded sadly at me in agreement. I still have the photo of myself feeding a goaty 5 years ago 🙁

Still, we can walk past the pens and wave madly at the goats. They really are smart creatures and will look at you to see what you are up to. In India and lots of other places, goats are sometimes treated as pets! I definitely want to have a pet goat when I grow up.

If you desperately need a dose of goat hugging, you can trying going to the LA Goat Farm in Kluang, Malaysia (approx 2 hrs away from Singapore)

Yes I know, I feel like that too sometimes. Stuck in a cage with no where else to go but to grit my teeth and not get shit upon.

Hay Dairies (9) AVA says NO caressing the goats!

Are you serious????

Hay Dairies (10)

$2 per bottle of milk. Lots of people can’t stand the goaty taste. I think it’s just a mindset you need to get over. After half a cup, you’ll be downing the whole bottle and installing a goat in your house.
