Hotel Jen Tanglin–Staycation!

Last month, I had the opportunity to enjoy a staycation just before Christmas with the Partner at the recently refurbished Hotel Jan Tanglin (used to be Traders Hotel). It’s been such a long time since I had a staycation in Singapore and I was really looking forward to the short break, even if the hotel is but a 1 minute drive from my office! I don’t know about you, but I love having staycations.

I’d love a vacation overseas any day of course, but I still love staycations because there’s just no hassle to it, and I have the entire time to fully enjoy the hotel facilities without having to worry about any household chores or cleaning up after that! I’ve stayed in some beautiful hotels around the world, but never got the chance to fully bask in it all because of the need to balance the sight seeing schedule. Being right in the heart of town is another great plus point for me too, I can stay out late and just simply walk back to the hotel without worrying about transport!

Hotel Jen Tanglin - Club Room (11)

Check out this stylishly appointed club room we got to enjoy at Hotel Jen. It has quite a character of its own don’t you think? Love the drawings on the walls, different rooms have different ones. It may not be a very big room compared to other newer hotels, but at 25 sqm, we both felt it was still a comfortable size, and most importantly, very cosy.

I love the decor of every part of the room, the colours and materials chosen are just so soothing to the eye. The little study desk and chair makes me want to type away at my laptop all day and push out 5 blog posts at once! There’s free wifi in the room and around the hotel, as well as ample electrical sockets, some with international configuration so you don’t even have to bring adaptors.

Hotel Jen Tanglin - Club Room (9)

Who doesn’t love an alcove to snuggle into? The Partner wasted no time in plopping himself on the cushy sofa and tried to spy on the people swimming at the pool below. Ask for the pool view if you can, then you can have unblocked views of half of Singapore including the Singapore Botanic Gardens right in front. I was surprised to see that there were very few lights at night coming from the houses.

Hotel Clover Staycation review

Staycations are all the rage these days, it makes you wonder why haven’t they been popular all along? I suppose 10 years ago when the oil price was still cheap, one could simply fly away to a distant beach resort to spend the weekend there. But with air tickets costing what they do these days, staycations, aka hotel vacations without leaving Singapore makes sense. It definitely does make good sense to me. I for one do not believe in short weekend getaways. If I have to take a plane to get somewhere, I’m going to stay at least 4 or 5 days.

And we all know how taxing it is to take leave from work. First of all, you have to choose dates which are preferably not during your department’s peak period. The days leading up to the said holiday, you feel like you’re in a pressure cooker, trying to make sure all the work is cleared before your departure! A short weekend staycation takes the pressure off me, as there’s no leave that needs to be taken.

Couple of weeks ago, the Partner and I had a short staycation at Hotel Clover along Hong Kong Street. Hotel Clover is a new budget business hotel. The rooms may be small, I’ll be frank about that, but being new, the rooms and furniture are speckless and clean. The best part about Hotel Clover? That it’s so close to the Central Business District area! It’s located right smack in the middle, where Clarke Quay is on one end while Boat Quay is on another. We had a great time combing the whole of Clarke Quay to soak in the vibes, and only had to take a short stroll back. No need to worry about how long it would take to get a taxi! If we had had another night to spare at Hotel Clover, we would have checked out Boat Quay as well. The stroll along the river at night can be quite romantic.

Pan Pacific Singapore – Pacific Club Lounge

If you’re thinking of having a staycation at the Pan Pacific Singapore, I highly recommend that you pay a little more to get access to the Pan Pacific Hotel Pacific Club Lounge. We thought the Pacific Club to be well appointed with an East meets West design that blended very well together. Throughout our entire staycation, apart from some time spent in the pool, the rest of our waking hours were pretty much spent at the Pacific Club!

I often like to summarise my liking for a particular type of decor by saying whether it would be something I would like my house to look like. In this case, the Pacific Club passed the test. I certainly would love my living room to be furnished in this manner, comforting, inviting, yet still classy and elegant.

Happy Orange Juice with champagne added

Of course, having club lounge access means having a few special privileges, such as the opportunity to have breakfast on the 38th floor of the Pan Pacific Singapore, rather than at the usual hotel restaurant (The Edge) with everyone else. Afternoon tea and evening cocktails are also provided, so you never have to worry about going hungry. During the in-between hours, you can still get drinks and fruits.

We checked in at the Pan Pacific Singapore just in time to enjoy the afternoon tea spread from 3pm – 5pm. Of course, don’t be expecting an entire afternoon tea buffet like what you would get in a proper afternoon tea.

Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore Staycation

Pan Pacific Hotel Singapore (7)

Stayed at the Pan Pacific Singapore 2 weeks ago. It was an absolutely relaxing and recharging experience. Before we booked the room, I mulled briefly over whether it would be worth the money just for a 1 day affair. However, there were no doubts that this was the right decision once we had checked into the hotel.

Staycations (ie “holidaying” without leaving Singapore) are a common thing in Singapore now, but perhaps not so common is a staycation coupled with club room access. Having club room access means that you can access the exclusive club lounge, and this is great for those who don’t plan to leave the hotel at all. There’s only so much sleeping and tv watching you can do in the hotel room, and you can’t swim all day either. Club lounge access allows you to have your breakfast in the exclusive club lounge rather than rough it out with the rest of the guests in the Hotel restaurant. Also, afternoon tea and evening cocktails are provided, which means that you don’t even have to worry about your meals!

The Pacific Club

We spent a good part of our staycation holed up at the Pacific Club sipping tea and eating nibbles while reading newspapers or just enjoying the view. More about the Pacific Club in my next post, but first up, pictures of our Pacific Harbour King room.

Bay Hotel Singapore is organizing an online treasure hunt competition, paired with questions about the hotel, exclusively for fans of Bay Hotel Singapore’s Facebook fanpage in Singapore.

The online treasure hunt is inspired by the cupid and love of Valentine’s Day, where participants will have to locate 3 icons amidst images of the hotel. Facebook fans that manage to show evidence of finding these 3 icons, and who correctly answer the given question – “What is the name of the tapas bar and grill at Bay Hotel Singapore?” – will stand a chance to win the prize.

Each lucky winner will win a one night stay in Bay Hotel’s Singapore Deluxe Queen Room for 2 persons, including breakfast. There will be two lucky winners. The Valentine’s Day treasure hunt will end on 19th February 2012 (11pm, GMT +8), with the winners announced in late February 2012.
