Salt Tapas & Bar– Surprisingly affordable brunch menu!

Salt Grill & Sky Bar has always been on my list of restaurants for special occasions thanks to the good food, exquisite presentation and amazing near 360 degree views of Singapore from the 55th floor of ION Orchard. But to dine here costs a pretty penny which is why it is reserved for special occasions. But did you know that Salt Grill & Sky Bar has a “sibling” in the form of Salt Tapas & Bar located at Raffles City shopping centre, which offers dishes at much more wallet friendly prices?

Salt Tapas & Bar is an extension of the existing “Salt” Brand by celebrated Australian Chef Luke Mangan. The menu has recently been revamped and now presents quality modern tapas with an Australian twist, at affordable prices. I am always wary about tapas places as the portions tend to be miniscule while charging full appetiser prices. Not so at Salt Tapas & Bar. Quite a number of the dishes we tried, in particular the brunch menu items, are large enough to be considered as mains. And the amazing thing is that the pricing is comparable to cafes you find in Singapore, and we are talking about food from a celebrated brand name located in the heart of town! This is probably one of the best kept secrets and I wish I’d known about it earlier!

The brunch menu is particularly worthwhile checking out for its affordable prices. For example French toast with clotted cream and Okinawa ice cream at $15, or scrambled eggs with ratatouille on toast at $15 or even the grilled sirloin with mash, salad and poached egg at $18!

Hotel Jen Tanglin–Staycation!

Last month, I had the opportunity to enjoy a staycation just before Christmas with the Partner at the recently refurbished Hotel Jan Tanglin (used to be Traders Hotel). It’s been such a long time since I had a staycation in Singapore and I was really looking forward to the short break, even if the hotel is but a 1 minute drive from my office! I don’t know about you, but I love having staycations.

I’d love a vacation overseas any day of course, but I still love staycations because there’s just no hassle to it, and I have the entire time to fully enjoy the hotel facilities without having to worry about any household chores or cleaning up after that! I’ve stayed in some beautiful hotels around the world, but never got the chance to fully bask in it all because of the need to balance the sight seeing schedule. Being right in the heart of town is another great plus point for me too, I can stay out late and just simply walk back to the hotel without worrying about transport!

Check out this stylishly appointed club room we got to enjoy at Hotel Jen. It has quite a character of its own don’t you think? Love the drawings on the walls, different rooms have different ones. It may not be a very big room compared to other newer hotels, but at 25 sqm, we both felt it was still a comfortable size, and most importantly, very cosy.

I love the decor of every part of the room, the colours and materials chosen are just so soothing to the eye. The little study desk and chair makes me want to type away at my laptop all day and push out 5 blog posts at once! There’s free wifi in the room and around the hotel, as well as ample electrical sockets, some with international configuration so you don’t even have to bring adaptors.

Who doesn’t love an alcove to snuggle into? The Partner wasted no time in plopping himself on the cushy sofa and tried to spy on the people swimming at the pool below. Ask for the pool view if you can, then you can have unblocked views of half of Singapore including the Singapore Botanic Gardens right in front. I was surprised to see that there were very few lights at night coming from the houses.

Makan Expedition with Fiji Water

Food Expeditions aka Food Trails are getting more popular in Singapore it seems. People are no longer just satisfied dining in a nice restaurant, they now want to make an adventure out of it. And if you have a good weekend afternoon to spare, with some friends who are game enough to join you, I say why not? It’s money well spent, judging from the response garnered by the Fiji Water Signature Creations Expedition I attended last month.

You can read more about how the Fiji Water Signature Creations Expedition works here, but basically for $180, you get to try a signature dish each at 6 different restaurants, each paired with a glass of wine and FIJI Water. No need to worry about how to get around as we were chauffeured, and the whole event took 6 hours! After all the food and nearly unlimited amounts of wine, I saw many happy faces near the end of the day. Hic.

We started off the event by gathering at Absinthe Restaurant at Boat Quay.  I’d been to Absinthe Restaurant Francaise only once a few years ago, and that was when they were still at Bukit Pasoh. I love dining at French restaurants. The meal usually spans 3 hours and even though it is expensive, you are paying for 3 hours of luxurious enjoyment. Definitely not for people who like gobbling down their food fast. Love the shop house location, woody tones with ornate touches here and there! I definitely want to come back to Absinthe again for lunch.

Looks like I am having 3 wines, but nope, only 2 glasses are mine. One was the bubbly they served to make sure all the guests start off on a happy note. The Foie Gras Terrine was EXCELLENT. It was smooth and silky, and in quite a generous portion, really the next best thing to eating foie gras itself. The warm brioche was really fluffy and buttery tasting and actually warm when served. Don’t you just hate the 1st world problem where your starter is so good that you want to eat it all, yet you worry it might fill you up too much and ruin your main meal?

Have you tried Tex-Mex food in Singapore? Apparently it’s not all that common here according to our host for the evening, Daryl Saw, the Business Development Manager and also son of the owner of Santa Fe and Stewords Riverboat. Santa Fe was amongst the 1st to introduce Tex-Mex cuisine in Singapore when they first established in 1999. I tried to throw up a couple of names such as Chili’s and Planet Hollywood, where I recall I had Fajitas and quesadillas. It seems those are not really authentic “Texan Mexican”, as “Tex-Mex” isn’t as spicy. Ah well, I’m really not an expert in the area of Mexican cuisine or Texan cuisine and their variations so I will just leave it as that.
