White asparagus season again with Marriott Pool Grill–And the steaks are perennially good!

It’s white asparagus season again, so for those of you who love white asparagus, now’s the time to indulge when these beautiful stems are at their best. And for those of you who have never tried white asparagus, I highly recommend you to, not least because of the nutrients that’s packed in them. They are juicier, more tender and sweeter than the green asparagus variety.

From now until 30 April, you can sample white asparagus at Marriott Pool Grill, specially flown in from the Netherlands. There are 3 ala-carte dishes to choose from.

Marriott Pool Grill - Classic ( Steamed white asparagus, poached egg, hollandaise sauce) $20

Classic (Steamed white asparagus, poached egg, hollandaise sauce) $20

This is the most affordable dish if you just mainly want to sample the white asparagus in its full glory. The creamy and buttery poached egg goes really well with the juicy sweetness of the asparagus.

Where to find white asparagus? – Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel

It’s Spring in Europe, and that means white asparagus season is here! Check out specially curated white asparagus dishes available at the Pool Grill restaurant at Marriott Tang Plaza Hotel. Hurry, because they are only available until 31 May 2016!

What’s the difference between white asparagus vs the more common green asparagus you may ask? Well apart from the colour, white asparagus has a more delicate flavour, with a nutty hint at times. It also tastes slightly sweeter and juicier to me. And the fascinating thing is that all asparagus start out the same, but those you want white are deprived of sunlight by completely covering them with earth when they are growing. This prevents them from producing chlorophyll, and hence they end up white instead of green.

There are many ways to eat white asparagus, but the best is to leave them lightly cooked so that you can enjoy their natural taste. I prefer to pair them up with stronger tasting accompaniments such as with steak so that the contrasting flavours are more pronounced. Here are the 6 asparagus dishes you can enjoy at Marriott hotel during white asparagus season. Please note the pictures below are about 1/2 – 2/3 the original portion as this was sampled as part of media tasting session.

Hotel Intercontinental Weekend High Tea

I think everyone can tell by now that I just love going for afternoon tea and discovering new cafes. One of the afternoon high teas I like is at Hotel Intercontinental’s lobby. It is quite similar to the Rose Verandah at The Shangri-La Hotel and L’Espresso at Goodwood Park Hotel in that it focuses on Western afternoon tea items.

Those who like a huge spread will not like these places, but the novelty of dining in such places is that the setting makes you feel so relaxed, as if you are not in Singapore. If you’ve been to Hotel Intercontinental, you will know that most of the seats are the sofa type, so it was great to be able to lounge on the sofa nibbling away. Between the 2 of us, we had 2 huge sofas plus 2 arm chairs. I sat on each one throughout the course of the high tea. Hee hee!

HotelIntercontinental afternoon tea items Free flow of lamb chops was reason enough for the Partner to give the thumbs up to Hotel Intercontinental. As for me, I think I emptied half the tureen of asparagus cooked in cheese.

HotelIntercontinental jam donut with more jam

Jam donut with 2 scones Two types of scones (1 fruit scone and 1 plain scone), plus sugar jam donuts.

HotelIntercontinental made to order sandwichesI think the made to order sandwiches will surely please. I haven’t seen that at any other afternoon tea buffet that I’ve been to. They have a whole selection of condiments like smoked meats, smoked salmon, ham, cucumbers, pickles, caviar cream and a whole lot more I can’t remember now.

Just tell the chef what you want and the type of bread and they will prepare the sandwiches for you.
