Dulux Let’s Colour [Part 3] : My transformed room after using Dulux Painting services

After the nail biting decision of going for a really dark wall colour, we waited for the good people of Dulux to come turn our white walls into the beautiful image we had in mind. The painters arrived at 9.30 am on the dot as arranged, and immediately got cracking. They looked very experienced and seemed pretty methodological in their process.

Dulux Painting Serice (2)

First things first, armed with a ton of old newspapers and plastic sheets, they got right down to covering all the surfaces that were not meant to be painted. Where the cupboard edges met the walls, they were meticulous in ensuring a straight line. If only the HDB painters had put such heart into their work, I wouldn’t be “boasting” cupboards with white splotches now. At one point, the painters even asked me who it was that did the last paint job. I gave them one word, “HDB”, and they nodded at me with sympathy.

When getting your rooms painted, most people would pay a lot of energy and effort into deciding what colours to choose. I for one am still thinking whether or not to go ahead with my original stately blue choice, or to go for a more neutral earthy tone, both of which I think would go really for the theme that I have in mind.

But one thing most people forget to think about, is the type of paint to get. Yes, you may have selected the colour, but times have changed! Gone are the days where paint is just a coating on the wall that happens to have a colour. Nowadays, paint comes with magical scientific properties that you would have not thought possible, I kid you not! For example, if your walls have many imperfections like cracks, you ought to try the the Dulux Pentalite  paint. If you want some help making your tiny rooms look just that bit bigger, Dulux Light & Space with Lumitec is what you want. For indoor spaces, these are the following paints that you can get from Dulux.

  • Dulux All (all in one)
  • Dulux Wash & Wear (Repels tough stains)
  • Dulux Pure (with air cleansing properties)
  • Dulux Light & Space with Lumitec technology (makes rooms look bigger)
  • Dulux Pentalite (hides walls imperfections)
  • Dulux Weathershield (protection against the weather)

That Dulux Light & Space with Lumitec technology sure sounds like it was taken out of a page from Harry Potter’s world, but in actual fact, how it works is that it has properties which allows it to reflect up to twice as much light than normal emulsion wall paint, which makes the walls look brighter and hence larger. I’m sure most HDB dwellers would be keen to consider that.

I won’t be going for the Dulux Light & Space though. Although my rooms are also HDB sized, I am lucky that due to the layout of the flat, all my rooms already receive bright sunshine throughout the day. I can’t imagine it getting any brighter, so I’ll be going for another type of paint to solve another “pesky” problem that I recently discovered.

After the stressful part of purchasing a new home, comes the even more stressful decision of how to redecorate and renovate the house into a home. The people from Dulux Singapore have kindly offered to sponsor a paint job for my home, and I am really looking forward to the transformation. The perfectionist in me wants everything to be picture perfect such that I will have a home to be proud of, and more importantly, to have a home that I am inspired to come home to each day.

Although what we have bought is a DBSS, which means that the place is in move in condition, there is much scope for improvement. For one, there is no differentiation to any of the rooms, apart from the size. I want a home where each room boasts its own unique features and identity. Case in point….guess which room is the study room in my house?

Guess which Room (3)

Guess which room is the study room in my house???

Can’t tell right?? Every room has white walls! Although white walls do go well with the parquet flooring, still, there must be more to life than just white, right? The people at Dulux told me that Singaporeans’ favourite paint colour is WHITE! OMG, I do not want to be just like everyone else! I think there’s a tendency for people to be a little complacent in this regard. When we first moved in, the white walls look pleasant enough, so it’s natural to focus the renovation ideas on other aspects such as furniture and woodwork, not realising that the colour of the walls plays a very important role in the look and feel of the house. The colour of the walls is like a foundation, a canvas that sets the theme and mood.

Ok so the easy bit was deciding that we won’t settle for white walls in every room. The hard part is deciding on the colours! The very thought of having to choose something that I will permanently have to live with, at least for the next few years is enough to send me into months of procrastination!

Luckily, Dulux sent us on a 3 hour crash course on colour inspiration, where I learnt a few nifty tricks. Here are 6 steps that anyone will need to take in order to select the perfect colour for each room.

  1. Know about Colour Psychology
  2. Check out the Dulux Colour Wheel
  3. How Colours affect a space
  4. Find inspiration from Dulux Inspiration booklet, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram
