Bornga BBQ Restaurant at Star Vista

Recently I was invited to try out Bornga, a Korean BBQ Restaurant at Star Vista. I am no expert when it comes to Korean BBQ, having been to only one other a couple of years back at the Esplanade. Which was why I was quite happy to make the trek to Star Vista, even though I live on the opposite end of Singapore.

Established in 2002, Bornga is a BBQ chain restaurant in Korea, and is the brainchild of Jong Won Paik, one of Korea’s most renown celebrity chefs. The opening of Singapore’s restaurant marks the 1st in Singapore and the 13th outlet outside of Korea. You can now find Bornga in China, Indonesia and even one outlet in USA, as well as 33 others in Korea.

Be warned, I will be inundating you with numerous pictures of raw meat. I sure hope pictures of raw meat turns you on, because I sure am getting hungrier as we speak.

Okay let me first start with something less bloody…the side dishes. As you know, all Korean meals are accompanied with a variety of small side dishes. I am in awe of all Korean housewives, how they must slave over the stove having to prepare so many different things.

Bornga - Ggot Sal (unmarinated boneless beef; $38) (2)

First up, the Ggot Sal, which is boneless and tender prime beef cuts served non-marinated so that guests can enjoy its deep beef flavour. Now I often hear people saying “oh this meat is great, the beef flavour is not so strong!” and nothing irks me more than to hear those kinds of statements. I’m like, why did you bother to order the dish if you didn’t want to taste it? Notice the rich marbling, which I’m sure is a huge turn on for anyone who loves his meat.

This is one of the favourite dishes in Bornga. Apparently the recipe is patented as the beef slices are seasoned in Bornga’s secret marinade. Unlike the typical Korean BBQ dish of bulgogi which usually appears dull after marinating for at least half a day in dark-coloured sauce, Bornga’s Woo Samgyup is served shortly after being doused in the dressing that retains the meat’s natural colour, while enhancing the traditional bulgogi taste.
While the meat tasted great, I think they can do away with the pumpkin slices as it just looks weird….don’t you think?

This is how the Woo Samgyup looked like after being BBQed. Loved the aroma and flavour of the BBQ meat for both the meat dishes I have featured so far. Certainly, keep your calorie counter at home when dining at a Korean BBQ restaurant but it’s well worth the calories! I’m afraid I was a little too busy wolfing the slices down to really pay attention to what Ivy from FoodNews was saying.

Paulaner Bräuhaus

I am quite lost when it comes to choosing a place to eat when in a shopping centre. I love keeping tabs on the restaurant and cafe scene, and most of the times, all the interesting restaurants that I want to try are located off the beaten track. Another reason why dining in a mall doesn’t catch my fancy is that the queues are horrendous! Come at 7pm on a Friday or a weekend and you’re almost guaranteed a half hour wait, which totally sux when you’re already famished.

Which was why I was rather apprehensive yesterday during a movie outing with several colleagues. We were supposed to watch Horrible Bosses at GV Marina and there was some vague idea of dining at Victoria Peak at the Suntec Convention Centre but no reservation was made. As expected, a last minute suggestion popped up, which was to go to Paulaner Brauhaus. It proved to be a pretty good suggestion because I haven’t been to Paulaners in like 6 years or something. I don’t know if my colleague enjoyed herself though, cuz she maintains a vegetarian diet on the 15th of every month…

It was very crowded on the 1st floor, but almost empty on the 2nd floor (pictured above) which houses the restaurant. It seems hardly anyone knows that there is a restaurant section on the 2nd and 3rd floor! People! Paulaners serves proper meals upstairs, and not just bar food! The bar menu does have some meal sounding things, but go upstairs and you will get the full menu.

Paulaner Brauhaus - Light Lager

It was Sunday and from about 5-8pm they have a 1 for 1 drink. I ordered the 0.3litre light lager $13. With beer, I don’t know enough to describe the intricacies of the taste. I just know that I liked it and i finished about 1 and a half glasses.

Generous amount of warm complimentary bread, with pate and butter. Our main dish arrived soon after so I was forced to discard the bread and attempt to conquer the main dish.

Paulaner Brauhaus - Meatpile

This is what I call the MEAT PILE. Ok they obviously called it a more refined German Platter, but seriously, I think MEAT PILE is a more apt description! When the 2 guys saw the amount of meat on the plate, their eyes glistened and the savage side of them emerged. Throughout the entire meal, they kept gushing about how happy they felt looking and devouring all the meat. And it is seriously a lot of meat. Each pax is charged $29.90 and you need a minimum of 2 pax. The amount here is a 2 pax order, but 2 guys and 1 girl could not finish all of this meat! I suppose if we hadn’t drunk the beer, the 3 of us might just have been able to conquer this.

Meat pile close up

Here’s a close up of the meat pile. I liked the oozy cheese sausage at the bottom of the picture, and definitely the roast pork knuckle. You can choose to have boiled knuckle, but I say go for the roasted one (not that I’ve tried the boiled one but do I really need to advise you on this?). I didn’t like the meatloaf, it felt too smooth and processed, and totally unlike the NZ meatloaf I am familiar with that is chock full of detectable vegetable and meat bits. The sauerkraut was also so so, not pungent enough for me! When ordering this, just throw your diet out the window and just enjoy the crunchy roast pork knuckle fats. Think of it as collagen, good for the skin! Oh, mashed potato was served, but largely ignored for obvious reasons.

Paulaner Brauhaus - Pizza

My other colleague ordered this pizza for $17, the one on the vegetarian diet. But she only managed to finish 3 pieces. Definitely not the authentic Italian pizza that I like. The yellow bits are peaches or apricots, which is an interesting change. I wonder if this is a German version of pizza. Seriously I don’t know how she managed to sit through the entire meal watching us wolf down the meat pile.

All in all, it was a very fun meal. Meat pile coupled with beer tends to lower the inhibitions of others. I might actually order the roast pork knuckle on its own the next time and not have to share all the crispy bits with other crispy bit loving people.

Go on a Sunday evening to get 1 for 1 beers, and bring your Citibank or Amex card for 15% discount on food! And don’t forget to leave your diet at home!

I’m going to do a full post on this restaurant sometime soon, but I can’t resist putting up the picture of this steak first! As much as I think it’s vital to eat enough vegetables and fruits, let’s face it, a picture of a salad ain’t going to turn me on as much as a picture of real meat. Here’s a toast to steak!

Salta Parrilla Christmas Lunch

After having gone to Goodwood Park for Christmas Lunch 2 years in a row, we decided to try something else for a change. I had a really good time at Salta Parrilla the 1st time I went there and I had been finding another opportunity to revisit again. So I was glad to know that they would be open for Christmas, offering up a very good Christmas semi-buffet lunch at only $39.90! Btw they are having the same thing again for New Year’s Day so don’t miss out. This is one of the best places to have good meat.

Discovered that they’ve added wooden panes to give more privacy to the diners. I quite liked being able to look in and out actually. We were the 1st to arrive so we got a really nice seat by the corner opposite the TV.

Slow cooked lamb ordered by my mother and the Partner. Juicy, tender and flavourful. The chefs manning the grill/parrilla must be really talented!

Slow cooked veal. Was a little tougher than I’d expected. Had to get the Partner to carve it up for me cuz my hands got shaky after a while. I think I’m used to different cuts too, this particular cut didn’t look too appetising either.

Fish was not supposed to be on the Christmas lunch menu, but we had requested a special order in advance since my father doesn’t eat 2 or 4 legged land dwelling animals. It’s funny to say this, but you know what, I thought the cod fish was the best dish. Yes it was way too oily, but the flavours was intense, and it was so flaky and smooth! Every sliver literally melted in my mouth.

Sides of vegetables. As previously mentioned in my 1st visit, the vegetables are nothing spectacular, since their speciality is in meat. The potatoes were very good though. Just a few sprigs of rosemary and garlic transformed the potatoes into wonderful balls of flavour.

Empanada – Similar to our curry puffs except this one contained roquefort cheese. We were kinda expecting some kind of meat filling, so that was a little disappointing. Didn’t need more cheese after the huge selection at the cheese station. The empanada was pretty bland too, the skin was nothing like our crispy or flaky curry puffs. This one was pretty tough.

Complementary coffee – Damn strong. Something like 3 shots of expresso in 1 cup! After putting in nearly 2 packets of sugar and lots of milk, it became quite nice and we finished it up.

Icon Village all decked out for Christmas. I like the look of this little alley way with the reddish brick theme. I believe there is a gourmet olive oil and honey shop here, in addition to some Japanese restaurants, pubs, nail spa and Salta.

Conclusion: Salta’s speciality is in its grilled meats. The appetisers and desserts were just pretty okay. Since the meat dishes on the ala carte menu already costs about $30, we were okay to fork out another $10 to enjoy the semi-buffet. I’m definitely going to come back again to try out that skirt steak and sweetbreads that I’ve been thinking about for the last 2 months!
