Riders Cafe Revisited

I’ve always been amazed with the tranquil location of Rider’s Cafe. I guess it’s no surprise from the name that Rider’s Cafe is located within the Bukit Timah Saddle Club. It is located just off Eng Neo Avenue, in a woody and forested area that is next to impossible to get to via public transport as it is nearly a kilometre from the main road and pitch dark at night. I’d been to Rider’s Cafe several years back on a weekend at about 4pm, and we were one of the few customers there. Imagine my surprise when we went there for lunch on a week day and it was packed! It was a Friday, but still!!

Rider's Cafe (9)

There is no air-con at Riders Cafe but you will hardly miss it because there are fans all over the place, and also the greenery helps take the heat away. Those people sitting at the veranda have the view of the horse training area.

Rider's Cafe - Death by Chocolate Cake $13 (1)

Death by Chocolate Cake $13

Since it was a birthday celebration, let me start by introducing the cake that we ordered. The chocolate cake was SERIOUSLY GOOD and totally lived up to it’s name. It is so chocolaty and as if that is not enough, it is swimming in a generous pool of chocolate sauce. And there are hidden pieces of chunky chocolate bits within the cake. I hardly think that a chocolate cake can go much more chocolatey than this. But of course, as with all things in life, there must be balance, so here you go, a vanilla ice cream to join the crowd and make things more sublime. This is definitely one of the best chocolate cakes I have eaten in recent times. If you need to find some comforting chocolate cake, this would be it.

Most unique cafes in Singapore

Here’s a list of what I think are the best cafes in Singapore to visit in terms of uniqueness. Enjoy!

1. Casa Verde at the Botanic Gardens

Visitors Centre, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Cluny Road Singapore 259569

A cafe nestled amongst the greenery of the Botanic Gardens, you can watch people walking their dogs and little kids playing by the plant fountains. A very relaxing place to be in, if you can get a seat!

2. Privé at Keppel Island

No.2 Keppel Bay Vista, Marina at Keppel Bay Singapore 098382

The cafe overlooks the Marina. While you may not own a yacht (yet), it’s never any harm to lust after someone else’s! Romantic and peaceful at night.

3. Epicurious at Robertson Quay

#01-02 The Quayside, Robertson Quay Tel: 6734-7720

Epicurious is touted to have the best breakfast in Singapore. It’s situated along the picturesque Robertson Quay area. After a hearty meal, you can take a stroll along the Singapore River and watch the boats go by.

4. Sunset Bay Garden Beach Bar at East Coast Park

1300 East Coast Park, Bougainvillea Garden (Carpark F2) Singapore 468964
Tel: 6448 9060

You definitely need a car to get here. Snag a seat facing the beach and you will be able to watch people flying kits as well as the numerous cyclists whizzing by.

5. Riders Cafe at Bukit Timah Saddle Club

51 Fairway Drive Singapore 286965

Rider’s cafe, who would have known you can dine amongst horses in Singapore???

6. Jams Cafe at Prologue Bookshop in Ion Mall

2 Orchard Turn Singapore 238801

Ok Jam’s cafe is the most accesible out of the entire list. It’s located at Ion Mall so you can just drop off at the Orchard MRT. Since it’s located in a bookshop, with glass windows for you to watch Orchard Road go by, your best bet is to buy a book and grab a seat here.

Riders Cafe at the Saddle Club

The Riders Cafe was almost empty when we arrived at 4.30pm. Only 2 other tables were occupied. We thought we could have our pick on where to sit, but no, the girl told us most of the tables were reserved. When were the other guests arriving we asked? 7pm? We had to assure her that we would be leaving within the hour before she reluctantly gave us the table that we wanted.

That settled, we perused the menu looking for something nice for tea. The place is indeed very like a tranquil country place, or as country as Singapore can get anyway. If you get a good spot by the window, you can watch the horses trot by in the car park once in a while. Or if you sit by the Verandah, you can watch the horses being groomed or hosed down. Despite Riders Cafe not being air-conditioned, it was cool inside the cafe thanks to the numerous fans.

RidersCafe - Tea Scones

We ordered the Tea Scones set for $8. It comes with 2 humongous scones, plum jam, butter and whipped cream. These are the most humongous scones I have ever seen in Singapore. They are of the doughy variety rather than the crumbly variety.

RidersCafe - Tea Scone with Plum Jam Everybody loved the plum jam and couldn’t get enough of it! I just wish we could get clotted cream in Singapore rather than whipped cream or butter. It just isn’t the same without clotted cream! And as far as I know, there’s only 1 place in Singapore that serves scones with clotted cream, and that is Regent Hotel.

RidersCafe - Glass of Coke RidersCafe - Vanilla Milkshake

I ordered a coke. When I am thirsty, no other drink can quench my thirst as well as coke. Was as tasty as any coke can be and for $2, it was a huge glass of coke. The Partner ordered a vanilla milkshake. It was nice but a little too sweet.

RidersCafe - Cafe Latte

The Cafe Latte was nice and strong. But, just not as good as Papa Palheta and Highlander. I probably will be saying these words for all other coffees I try from now on. Just can’t get over how good Papa Palheta and Highlander were. But don’t read this wrongly, the Riders Cafe cafe latte was still good in its own right.

RidersCafe - Iced Water

Many nice spots in the cafe, just as long as the dreaded “reserve” sign is not put there. Well better make sure you call in advance for dinner because there was a “reserve” sign on practically every single table. This place must be packed to the gills at night, judging by the “reserve” signs.

Speaking of tables, we found the tables to be quite sticky. I wonder if they have had a good scrubbing lately, or at all? I could almost see a layer of grime on the table, which wasn’t noticeable at first because the tables are dark brown. Better bring your own wet cloth the next time?RidersCafe - Menu Board above counter

It may call itself a cafe, but the Riders Cafe also serves restaurant type dinner. When I went there, the specials of the week were Braised Beef Cheek, Fisherman’s Gioppino, Coq au Riesling, Sea Bream. Now those don’t sound like cafe food to me, don’t you agree? They also serve wines. The Partner was very keen to come back for dinner and enjoy the night settings. It must be very dark at night here so don’t come at night without private transportation.

Mimolette is right next door. When I come back here the next time, I would like to try Mimolette.RidersCafe - Horse trotting outside the Riders Cafe

As you drive along Fairways Drive, the slip road into riders cafe is very narrow. Drive slowly or you might just miss it. The signs for the Bukit Timah Saddle Club are bigger so look out for that instead.

The animals at the Saddle Club

We made it to Riders’ Cafe today, after being introduced to its existence by Early Morning Oats. The Saddle Club where Riders’ Cafe is, is amazing in the fact that it makes you feel like you are totally outside of Singapore! Without even entering the stables, we were able to see several horsies trotting along the carpark area. We saw this horsie which seemed to have something going on down under, so I’ll post a picture for you to go figure. The resident cat also graced us with its presence, but only as we were about to leave.

Horse Can you spot it? You may have to click on the photo to see an enlarged version if you still can’t spot it.

Cute kitty. This is the type of colour I like! Kitty tried to ignore me, but he/she kept swishing its tail as if it wanted me to pat it.

Shall do another post of the Riders’ Cafe soon. Keep watching this space!
