Oktoberfest Asia at Keppel Bay

*Media Release*

The inaugural Oktoberfest Asia premieres 16 October 2013 with a four day celebration of authentic Bavarian eating, drinking and revelling at the Keppel Island Plaza, at the Marina at Keppel Bay. Sprawled over the dates of 16 – 19 October 2013, revellers and beer enthusiasts will be treated to exclusive German beer and liquor, traditional gourmet grub and authentic Bavarian entertainment from the comforts of an air-conditioned marquee.

Organised by Dreamfields – the company behind an exclusive network of premium European beers and spirits – and Matt Bennett of Beerfest Asia, the four-day festival boasts support from some of Bavaria’s finest breweries: Paulaner Brauhaus, Schneider Weisse and Spaten. German spirit, Jägermeister, will also be showing its support with a secret party held in the middle of the festivities.

Pork Knuckles

Traditional German cuisine such as Schweinshaxe (pork knuckles), Bratwurst mit Sauerkraut (German sausages), meatloaf and goulash will be available while an assortment of beers and liquors will be sold at the Bavarian themed bars. I sent my 2 beer loving editors to cover the opening launch party held at Paulaner Brauhaus.

Servers in dirndls (traditional Bavarian dresses) will walk the halls of the marquee serving beer and pretzels as well.

Azur Crowne Plaza – Singapore and Malaysia Street Food Fiesta

Be transported to the vibrant streets of Singapore and Malaysia when you dine at Azur Restaurant at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Changi Airport. In conjunction with the national days of Singapore and Malaysia, Azur presents a bustling buffet of tasty street food featuring the two countries with live stations galore. The Partner and I were invited for a preview of the sumptuous spread!

Look forward to live stations where iconic street food will be prepared ala minute for diners and Azur’s interpretation of hawker fare by Executive Sous Chef, Andrew Tharm and his culinary team. There are familiar favourites such as Sambal Grilled squid, sambal stingray, oyster omelette, black pepper Sri Lankan Crab, Stir Fried Chilli Bamboo Clam and more main course dishes. At the dessert bar, you can find Bobo Cha Cha, Layered Pandan Kaya Cake etc.

We all have our favourites at the various hawker centres and coffee shops. These dishes I have highlighted have a slightly different touch to it to please the international palate. Here are some of the dishes that we tried.

Ipoh Hor Fun (1)

Ipoh Hor Fun – Flat rice noodles, shredded chicken, shrimp, Chinese mushrooms, greens and gravy topped with fried shallots and green pickled chilli

I’ve never tried Ipoh Hor Fun before and I thought it would be something quite different from the Hor Fun that I’m used to. I can tell that this version has made use of vibrant and fresh tasting ingredients.

Marina Square : The Dining Edition

Where to eat in Marina Square or the Suntec Shopping area is one question I am often asked. Previously, I would be hardpressed to think of a good answer, but now, I’m happy to report that the “gourmet zone” of Marina Square is finally up! This gourmet zone comprising of 16 restaurants, bistros, cafe bakeries, patisseries and coffee joints is known as The Dining Edition and it is definitely worth a visit if you are in this area!

We were invited on a Media Tour of The Dining Edition and we nearly collapsed from eating our way through 13 of the eateries that were already open 2 weeks ago! Of the 16 tenants there, there are several new-to-market names to look out for such as Lady M Confections (an established New York City cake boutique which will be opening its first outlet outside of USA!) I’m really looking forward to this one! As you can see from my post below on Saint Marc Cafe, I have a sweet tooth and I’ve plans to revisit soon.

GardenAsia and Cafe Bistro

One of the best perks of my job is that I have a bunch of fun loving colleagues who love exploring new cafes and eateries during our lunch hour. This totally fits in with the theme of my blog, which is to share with you all the unique cafes and restaurants in Singapore, even if this means having to traverse to the ends of Singapore to bring you something interesting!

GardenAsia is literally at the end of Singapore as it’s in the Kranji / Neo Tiew area. Just across the waters is Malaysia already, and if you venture even closer to the edge of Singapore eg at Sungei Buloh Nature Reserve, you might just end up on the Malaysian cellular network! Best to visit GardenAsia and it’s Kranji Countryside if you have a car, because buses are almost non existent on these farm way routes (except on weekends I believe), and you can bet your 2nd last dollar that an empty taxi won’t be cruising along here. Oh you might want to try the Kranji Shuttle, but that only operates every 1.5 hours. But it’s definitely worth a visit to this part of Singapore to get some urban reprieve.

Bistro @ GardenAsia (6)

The first thing that you are likely to chance upon at GardenAsia is this man-made pond next to the non-airconditioned Bistro @ GardenAsia. The pond isn’t much to look at, but it’s still interesting for being different. Even though it was scorching hot, we didn’t feel the heat sitting under the blissful shade in the cafe area. I wonder if it is because of the water effect?

Bistro @ GardenAsia (8)

We didn’t have lunch at GardenAsia because if you will believe it, we were farm hopping that day. We did stop for a couple of snacks just to test out the food though and I must say I’m impressed enough to want to make the cross country trip again on the weekend! Check out these crispy chicken wings. Perhaps I had to share these with my colleagues so I could only have one piece, but these were piping hot and very tasty! The skin was lightly crisp and the wings didn’t leave you with a greasy feeling.
