Charly T at 112 Katong

The kind people from FoodNews who previously invited me to dinner at Pantry at the Stables and Halia, once again invited me to join them at Charly T at the new 112 Katong Mall. The 1st time, I couldn’t make it as it was my father’s birthday, so I was very glad that they had a subsequent session!

Charly T is a fast-casual chicken based restaurant concept, quite similar to Kenny Rogers. You choose the chicken from 4 different marinades and then you choose the side dishes and special sauces to go along with your main meal.

Those who don’t like chicken but still want to have a nice evening with their friends can indulge in other signature dishes such as the Kalua Pork and Chicken Schnitzel.

You may not realise this but Charly T is actually a real life person! He has travelled the world and worked at a number of restaurants. You will notice that the dishes served at Charly T are inspired by his travels around the world. Through the restaurant, Charly T hopes that his customers can experience his travels vicariously.

Personally, I liked the Kansas City BBQ chicken the most as it had the strongest flavour. The other food bloggers also had their own personal favourites so just order what you think you would like the most.

Of the 4 side dishes, I liked the marcaroni and cheese the most. Tasted simple and comforting. I also found the vegetables to be fresh and still crunchy.

Charly T - Signature Sauces

Everyone agreed that the Chermoula Sauce was the best and most interesting flavoured sauce. It kinda looks like the mint sauce you get at Indian restaurants (which I love too btw), but it doesn’t taste of mint obviously. We all loved it so much we all tar powed the sauce! Anyway you can ask for all the sauces just to try out all the flavours.

Charly T - Kahlua Pork

At first I thought the meal was over after all the chicken dishes were out, but there was more to come….This is the Kahlua Pork $16. I know Charly T specialises in chicken, but really for me this was the best dish of the evening! The pork was so tender and just bursting with flavour. Every morsel was enjoyable. The meat had a smoky flavour and was slow cooked to bring out the best.

McDonald’s Open Doors Kitchen Tours

The McDonald’s Open Doors Kitchen Tours are coming up again! If you’ve always wanted to know what goes on behind the scenes, from the time you place your order to few seconds later that you receive your fish fillet, now’s the chance to sign up for the tours and find out first hand. Us lucky bloggers were invited to get a sneak preview before everyone else, but the real clincher? Being able to bring our cameras into McDonald’s kitchens! I was pretty surprised that McDonalds allowed us to do so, but if they weren’t going to object, I wasn’t going to object.

First stop, my most favourite stop of all, the FRENCH FRY station! When cooked well, don’t you think they are just lovely? These here are a bit messy. According to my friend who used to work at McDonalds, all fries should be placed upright, and the yellow strips on the back of the cardboard should not be visible or it means you aren’t getting enough fries! Hmmm, these here don’t really pass.

I really wish I knew how to cook fries like McDonalds. It’s too bad they don’t have their blue colour mayonnaise packets anymore. I love dipping the fries in mayo and pepper!

I really had a hard time trying to get a few good pictures of the guy making the burgers. Mr Fastest Fingers First was literally zooming all over the place. Before I could even snap, the burger was done. My DSLR camera can’t make it when compared to Mr FFF!

Only managed to take a picture of the McChicken after it was done. I hope he managed to get the buns toasted just right. Yeah, managed to get the Cheeseburger one. Mmmmm cheeeese.

Speaking of cheese, here’s a close up shot. I just had to, of course. I wonder what sort of cheese they use. Can’t seem to find it in the supermarkets.

Once again, Mr FFF getting nuggets out of the warming cabinet. He’s already taken 2 before I’ve managed to get a picture.

Closer look at the warming cabinet. There’s a time limit to how long the food items can be stored here before it has to be chucked out. Something along the lines of 10 – 20 minutes. If you want your food piping hot, you’re always welcome to request a fresh or customised order.

Before the patties even get to the warming cabinets, they have to first be grilled. And this clam-shell contraption here does the job. First, put the frozen patties in.

Contraption will clamp down on the patties to grill them. With this contraption, each patty will be cooked for the same amount of time and to the right thickness!

Voila, they are ready! I spy a few few red spots on the patty. I guess if you want yours really well done, ask for it.

Our friendly McDonald’s ambassador then brought us into the store room. They should call a box room since it was full of boxes. Didn’t know that Big Mac Sauce is dispensed from a can.

Next up was the walk-in freezer. It was very fun to be able to step into the freezer, with the freezer fans blasting cold air right into your face. I thought I would be able to see raw meat here, but it was also pretty much more boxes. Despite that, I’m sure little kids would find it exciting to be able to venture into a freezer for the 1st time in their lives.

I actually have done this numerous times as I used to temp at the airport inflight catering centre. One of my tasks was to procure frozen food from the freezers when needed. I was only 15 at that time and I found it a treat to be able to venture into the silent freezer away from the clanking of plates and dishes outside. It kind of stopped being fun when one occasion, the floor was so slippery that I couldn’t find traction while trying to pull open the huge metal door…..

Next, we got to see the staff lounge. They even had a TV in the staff lounge. Hey my company should learn from McDonalds. Free McDonald meals are provided for all staff, although I wonder if one could tolerate eating from the same restaurant every single day.

Spruce – Restaurant, Bar, Bakery

I have known about this place for the longest time and on several occasions, almost made it here. One huge stumbling block is the location, Spruce is pretty off the beaten track, and unless you know of its existence, you are almost unlikely to chance upon it. It seems though that lots of people know of Spruce, and think of it as the place to see and be seen.

Well so a few weeks ago, after making sure I’d checked Google Maps in advance, we made our way there. The place looks really cosy. I love cafes and restaurants nestled amongst greenery. Allows me to escape the concrete jungle and forget that I am in Singapore. Unfortunately, while the place looked inviting, it was so noisy! It must be due to the structure of the place, noise seems to bounce around even though the cafe isn’t even full. It’s worse if you sit in the air-conditioned room, then you get the cooking smells as well. I kind of developed a headache over the course of my brunch, and as a result, had to cancel plans for the afternoon.

Prices are not cheap here, be warned.

Spruce Spruce - British Brekkie

Spruce British Brekkie $18 – Came with 2 eggs, Cumberland sausage, mushrooms, bacon, tomato and a dish of watery baked beans. Also provided were 2 huge slices of bread, not shown in the picture. While the food tasted quite alright, I liked the Cumberland sausage in particular, I did think the breakfast to be quite over priced. For $12, I could have gotten about the same at Epicurious at Robertson Quay, and I’m sure there are many other places that charge less for this amount of food.

Spruce Signature Burger

Spruce Signature Burger $17 – Potatoes seen in the background were nice. They were fluffy on the inside and slightly crispy on the outside, and they were nicely spiced too. On the contrary, the patty in the burger tasted like plain minced meat with no hint of spice or herbs to enhance its flavour. The burger I had at SoHo7 near City Hall was so much better and half the price!

Was pretty crowded when we got there around 2pm on a Saturday. I wonder if the place is overhyped, because all 4 of us thought that once is more than enough. It’s sad because the place has such potential. I hope they get a better chef and relook their menu prices as well.

Do note that on weekends, they serve brunch until 2.30pm. After that, they serve high tea starting only at 3pm, so if you want a cooked meal, be sure to come earlier.

SoHo7 Cafe and Bistro

Once upon a time, I used to work in a lovely part of Singapore. Not only was it a convenient location, the place was steeped in history. The oldest church in Singapore was situated just next to my office, not to mention that there are several museums in the vicinity as well. Those were good times.

A few years ago, the building next to us, 36/37 Armenian Street, was acquired for refurbishment. Although we (or I at least) was sad to have to see the character of the old building change (hey there used to be people living in the upper quarters and we could see their laundry from our boardroom!), the consolation was that the building would be turned into something hip and happening, with cool cafes to cater to the Peranakan museum tourists. Alas, we never got to experience these cool cafes because we vacated the premises before the refurbishment was complete.

Anyway, the first cafe SoHo7 Cafe & Bistro is now open and I paid it a visit last week. Driving to Hill Street, it felt like being back home again, even if it came with a twinge of sadness. Standing along the street I could see that our old furniture was still there. The movers were just beginning to attack at it after we’ve left for nearly half a year.

Ok enough of the reminiscing and on to SoHo7 proper. It’s a tiny little cafe that occupies the corner unit of 36 Armenian Street. I think it can probably fit 30 people inside. There are a few high tables outside. Not a bad idea to sit outside on a cool day, sipping a cuppa while watching the cars whiz pass. It really is a peaceful hideaway just off the main road and 5 minutes from City Hall MRT.

Soho7 Cafe and Bistro

SoHo7’s focus is on breakfast dishes as well as burgers and sandwiches. The breakfast dishes are served daily from 8am until “the moon shines”.

SoHo7’s Best Ever Burger (with egg, bacon n swiss cheese) $9.70 – Very decent price for a burger this size. It’s chock full of ingredients and made to order. SoHo7 has this special sauce which really enhances the burger. The meat was also very juicy but a little fattening in my opinion. Interesting the way the stick a knife in the burger but that’s required due to the sheer amount of ingredients! Don’t wait too long to eat the burger because it will get slightly soggy with the amount of juices from the patty and the sauce. I did feel a bit sinful after eating this burger but if you’re lost for choice as there are quite a number of burger selections, you won’t go wrong with this one.

Grilled Chicken, Bacon, Swiss Cheese n Avocado Sandwich $8.70 – All the ingredients complemented each other. Not a single ingredient overpowered the rest. The lettuce was crisp, the bread was nice and fresh. The chicken was tender and tasty. Seriously, this sandwich costs like only a few dollars more than a burger from a fast food restaurant. I’d definitely go for this, knowing all the ingredients are fresh and the food is made with love.

Iced Chocolate $4.50 – Actually this is quite chocolatey, which is how I like it. But I didn’t like it that it is served in a cheap looking plastic cup.

Chocolate Cupcakes with peanut frosting $2 !! – Unbelievably good. The chocolate flavour was intense and there seemed to be a tinge of something different in it. Can’t quite put my finger on it. It seems denser than usual for cupcakes but I really don’t mind because what I want is flavour! You have to try this cupcake if you’re at SoHo7. Kudos to whoever who supplies these goodies to them.

We were at Marina Bay Sands yesterday and fretting over what to have for lunch. My cousin had a birthday celebration at Ku De Ta some weeks ago, but being a scaredy cat who is afraid of heights, I didn’t want to have to scale the 65 floors without a super special occasion as reason. I’d heard about the opening of Rasapura Masters (the Foodcourt) from Tiny Island (the mall spy) so we thought we’d try it out, even if it costs $14 for a bowl of prawn noodles, or was it $17?

Enroute, we went past a nice stretch with 2 restaurants with really cool looking exteriors. One was Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza, owned by the famous Mario Batali, and the other was Daniel Boulud db bistro moderne, owned by ….Daniel Boulud. Rasapura Masters went out the window and we stood there wondering whether to go to Mozza or Daniel Boulud.

Daniel Boulud won after we looked at the brunch menu so we went in. According to the Marina Bay Sands website, originally from Lyon, France, it is in New York that Daniel Boulud’s name has become synonymous with fine dining. His Manhattan restaurant Daniel, is considered one of the ten best in the world. The interior was equally delightful. I loved the woody and heavy decor. There were booth seats, table seats and high sofa seats.

A restaurant that serves a bread basket is nice. What is even better is if the bread tastes good. DB Bistro Moderne provided us 3 lovely types of bread. My favourite was the right one. It must be the cousin of croissant because it had a really wonderful buttery taste to it. It looks like the simple baguette you can get from any neighbourhood bakery, but tastes 10 times better. Why can’t we get bread this good outside? I wanted to finish it but then i had to leave space for my main course. The middle piece of bread had a really interesting flavour. It must have been the cousin of the pretzel because I could have sworn the flavour was just like a pretzel even if the texture obviously wasn’t.

Omelette Espagnole $19 – The Partner had this dish of eggy goodness. The omelette was very light and fluffy. The ingredients are not cooked within the omelette but are instead placed on top of it. The caramelised onions were very light and sweet, and together with the salty chorizo, they brought a new dimension to the otherwise plain omelette. I really liked the breakfast potato cubes too. They were crispy on the outside while still retaining their potato flavours. A simple salad was also provided on the side. A couple of token cherry tomatoes split in half would have given some colour to the also plain heap of salad leaves

NY Yankee Burger $20 – You know I have never figured out how to properly eat a burger after al these years. The minute I slice into one, everything falls apart and I end up eating it like how you would tackle a steak on a plate. Anyway it was worth the effort since the burger was so good. At first, I thought the minced beef patty was overcooked. The outer layers were charred and pretty tough. However, after I got past the outer rim, soft moist and juicy mince awaited me. There was hardly any gristle or fat in the mince so they must have used pretty good parts of the cow. They also provided 3 different types of dips: mustard, tomato sauce and mayonnaise. I suppose this is why
DB Bistro Moderne isn’t a pure French restaurant, but a fusion one, as French chefs can be particularly brutal to diners who request for tomato sauce.

Cafe Latte – Quite good I have to say. Intense without being too bitter. And a good sized cup too. I finished most of it. Actually I don’t have high expectations for coffee at restaurants because I feel that’s not their expertise. I rather have lunch/dinner then hop over to my favourite coffee joint for coffee instead. Luckily this one was pretty good.

Conclusion: We liked the place very much, the service staff are so attentive. We are going to return again for my mother’s birthday celebrations! Besides, it is one of the rare few places in Singapore that serves Rabbit, and the Partner is hell bent on trying that!
