Genting Palace Chinese Restaurant

We originally wanted to try out Genting Palace for dinner on our first night at Genting Resorts World, ie Saturday. However, we were told that our meal card would not be valid because the restaurant was already pretty full! Imagine my disappointment because I was all ready to go try out some abalone and other Chinese favourites! Imagine the effort I had to make when the Partner suggested going to a Western restaurant instead. The Partner doesn’t fancy abalone you see, he thinks it’s tasteless!

Anyway, I managed to check out Genting Palace for dim sum brunch the next day. Just so that we would not be faced with another Full House, we dragged ourselves out of bed at 8am, which for me is considered a substantial feat. I’m not one to jam-pack a gazillion activities during my holidays. I like to take it slow and savour every single moment.

As with most of the eateries in Genting, Genting Palace was priced slightly on the high side, as compared to a similar restaurant in Singapore. Well I guess it’s to be expected for touristy locations.

The dim sum here is quite okay. There are several nice dishes, but also several very unremarkable dishes. An interesting point to note is that most of the dim sum that came in the metallic containers were not piping hot, which would have contributed to the average experience. Those dim sum dishes that were served piping hot were very enjoyable.

This was one of the best dim sum dishes amongst all the stuff that we ordered. It was packed full of prawns and there was a nice oozy bit of cheese right in the middle. This came piping hot too. It seems that those dim sum served on the white dishes are made to order?

Best Chee Cheong Fun from Fan Play Savouries

…I have ever eaten to date that doesn’t come from a restaurant! There is this little secret hidden gem called Fan Play Savouries. It occupies one of the stalls right inside Carrefour Supermarket at Suntec City, near the vegetable section. I tell you, it’s worth the long walk through the mall to find this hidden gem. This is the best chee cheong fun I have eaten in a very long time too.

Fan Play Savouries sells Ipoh Chee Cheong Fun. I am told, Ipoh is famous for its Chee Cheong Fun and noodles because of the special qualities in the water that is readily available there. Apparently, even if the rest of your Chee Cheong Fun recipe ingredients are the same,as long as the water is different, the final product will exhibit a taste and texture that is quite different! The Chee Cheong Fun is sourced from one of the top Chee Cheong Fun manufacturers in Ipoh. During the research phase, the Boss of Fan Play made numerous trips down to the various manufacturers in Ipoh before finally deciding on the best one.

I have to agree that Fan Play’s Chee Cheong Fun is so silky smooth and soft, it just slides and glides so easily down the throat. The texture is simply amazing. And the interesting thing is, it doesn’t look like Chee Cheong Fun. If I hadn’t known any better, I would have thought that it was Kuay Teow I was eating. Strictly speaking, Kuay Teow is broader and thicker, but who cares? A rose by any other name smells as sweet!

Crystal Jade Dining IN Dim Sum

When it comes to Dim Sum, the Parents have probably tried more places than I have in the last few months. They have been secretly dining out without inviting me, on the pretext that I was too busy with my own programme. What kind of an explanation is that?? My programme is always flexible when free food is involved. Yeah they knew they were on shaky ground, so a reservation was quickly made at their latest discovery, aka Crystal Jade Dining IN at Vivocity.

I was initially surprised that they would suggest Crystal Jade. Although I had a good dim sum meal at one of the casual Crystal Jade restaurants several years ago, I just didn’t associate Crystal Jade (a really affordable restaurant) with good dim sum. I forget that Crystal Jade has so many outlets ranging from cheap to premium. Crystal Jade Dining IN is of course one of their premium restaurants.

I love this Vivocity outlet. Not only do you get a view of Sentosa, the natural light coming in makes for great food photography! The staff are really attentive and will not hesitate to fill up your cup with tea the instance it is empty. We were sitting at the lower tier, nearest the glass walls, and because of the tiered seating, we didn’t realise that the restaurant was totally full during lunch, it was that cosy.

I haven’t caught on to the Tapas fad, but small bites in the form of Dim Sum is okay for me. I wonder why.

I thought my parents were joking when they said they were going to order pumpkin soup. I’ve never been a fan of pumpkin, and much less pumpkin soup, which I expected to be a thick puree of pumpkin. Thankfully, it wasn’t and it was a really good recommendation too. There wasn’t a strong pumpkin taste actually. It lent itself in the colour of the soup, the smooth/slightly thick texture and sweet flavour. I loved the diced vegetables and seafood in the soup. I like my soups to have something to bite into, and not just be pure liquid.

I found this to be delicious at first bite, with the sweetness of the BBQ pork being just right. The pork was also firm and I did not detect fatty bits, which to me is a sign of a cheap quality bun. Towards the end, I did feel like there was a sort of off flavour in the pork, which made me wonder if the pork was not fresh.

Victoria Peak at Suntec Convention Centre

Just in case you didn’t already know, the Pearl River Palace that used to operate on the 3rd floor of the Suntec Convention Centre is no longer there. For quite a number of months now, Victoria Peak has been operating in it’s place. In fact, this is Victoria Peak’s 2nd outlet, the 1st being located on the 11th floor of Orchard Central! As for my beloved Pearl River Palace, it has closed for good so you won’t find it anywhere else in Singapore. I did actually enjoy dining at Pearl River Palace. The service and dim sum were exquisite!

So obviously, I had to go check out Victoria Peak to see if it would match up to the standards of Pearl River Palace. Whaddya know, upon stepping into Victoria Peak last Sunday for afternoon dim sum, I discovered that the place looks almost exactly like Pearl River Palace! The decor hasn’t changed! The only difference is that it wasn’t as crowded, the staff are no longer the same and for some strange reason, they don’t provide napkins anymore (the type you lay on your lap).

Victoria Peak is having a 30% discount on all dim sum dishes from now until perpetuity (ok the staff don’t know when the promotion ends so that means it’s relatively safe to go in the next few weeks). There was a huge signboard advertising the 30% discount, but not one of us saw it. I blame it on the throngs of New Creation Church goers who might have blocked my view of the signboard!

Deep fried Beancurd Skin with Prawn $5.50 – This is one of my favourite dishes to order whenever I have dim sum. I just love beancurd skin! This version here was not oily tasting which is good, but I thought that the prawn taste didn’t come through.

Victoria Peak - Har Gow

Steamed Shrimp Dumpling $5.50 –  Another must order for me. Dumplings were a little on the small side. Pretty good. At least the skins were nice and thin. Don’t like those dumplings with thick skins that go soggy after a while.

Siew Mai/Pork Dumpling $4.80 – I liked the bouncy texture of the pork dumpling and they were quite generous with the roe at the top of the dumpling.

Steamed Cheong Fun with Prawn $5.50 – This one was so so. Rice Roll felt a bit soggy and mushy. Prawns were not big enough.

Steamed Dumpling with wild mushroom in pumpkin sauce $5.50 – I have no idea how this tastes cuz this was served wrongly to our table. We spent 5 minutes trying to guess what this was, before relinquishing the dish to the wait staff. Should have quietly eaten it! And this wasn’t the only dish that was sent wrongly to our table. A total of 3 or 4 extra dishes were sent to our table! We should have grabbed them all! Even a jug of beverage was also sent to our table! At least none of the dishes we ordered went missing.

Victoria Peak - Crystal Dumpling

Steamed Vegetarian Dumpling with Spinach $4.80 – This was so so on the flavours but I liked the crunch of the ingredients. As with crystal dumplings, the skin tends to be thicker and stickier. Have you ever come across one with a thin skin?

Victoria Peak - Char Siew Pau

Steamed Barbecued Pork Bun aka Char Siew Bao $3 – Bao was pretty good. Everyone liked it as the meat tasted fresh and there was a lot of meat rather than cheap fats. I would have liked for the sauce to be slightly sweeter, but that boils down to personal preference. Bun was fluffy and light.

Victoria Peak - Vegetable Pot

Vegetable Pot $19 – Being a pescetarian, my father decided to order this to supplement the number of meat-free dim sum he consumed. I was hesitant to order this at first (I mean dim sum is supposed to be relatively veg free and I was in a dim sum mood) but it turned out to be a great dish. Everyone loved it very much! The soup broth was really flavourful and rich. The vegetables were all fresh and still had a bite to it. Really really nice and healthy too!

Crispy Noodle with Prawn $19 – This was also another great order although I’m not really sure if it is worth $19. There weren’t that many prawns, and noodle is cheap. Nonetheless, the thick stock that they ladled onto the crispy noodle made the noodles taste very good. The stock is provided separately so your noodles remain crispy until when you desire to have them.

Steamed Egg Custard Buns $4.80 – Last but not least, the flowing custard bun. Served hot with lots of oozy custard in a fluffy bun. Really no complaints here. Sorry no photo of the custard oozing out cuz it’s just tooooo precious to waste on a photo!

On the whole, I would say that Victoria Peak’s dim sum is very good, especially considering the price. For all that we ate, we spent only $79 including tea! It’s just not as good as my beloved Pearl River Palace, but I will certainly make another trip back, while the 30% discount promo is on! Remember, the discount applies only to the dim sum dishes, so if you’re ordering the crispy noodle or the vegetable pot, you have to pay full price!
