[CNY 2017] Chinese New Year buffet with Peranakan flavours at Swissotel Merchant Court Ellenborough Market Cafe

For a truly Asian Chinese New Year buffet spread, check out Swissotel Merchant Court’s Ellenborough Market Cafe. The restaurant is well known for its Peranakan buffet which offers all-time favourites such as the Ayam Buah Keluak, Kueh Pie Tie and Durian Pengat. Now how about combining that with Chinese New Year must-haves such as Pen Cai, Waxed Duck and Sausage Rice and Teowchew Steamed Cold Crab?

Incidentally, Ellenborough Market Cafe’s Executive Chef Louis Tay was also team manager of the Singapore Culinary Team that clinched double gold at the Culinary Olympics held in Germany in 2016. So you know the food has got to have some standard at Ellenborough Market Cafe.

Pan Pacific Hotel Peranakan Afternoon Tea

Pan Pacific Singapore celebrates National Day with the introduction of a limited time only Peranakan Afternoon Tea at the Pacific Marketplace. From 16 June to 9 August only, you can order a 4-tiered tiffin carrier to enjoy dishes such as Kueh Pie Tee, Open-Face Otak Sandwich and Quail Egg, Nyonya Chicken Curry. For desserts, you have kueh lapis, tapioca cakes and Onde Onde. It costs only $58++ for the 4-tier tiffin carrier plus coffee and tea for 2. The portions are quite generous, so 3 small eaters may even enjoy this Peranakan Afternoon Tea set.

Straits Cuisine at Orchard Cafe

Orchard Hotel’s Orchard Cafe has relaunched its “Straits Cuisine” buffet where you can savour Peranakan dishes, traditional roasts, seafood options and all-time local favourites. This is really one buffet where you won’t find any cooked Western dishes, which attests to the passion that Orchard Cafe, Executive Chef Paul Then and his team of chefs have for the buffet spread they have come up with.

Available at the Straits Cuisine buffet spread includes familiar favourites such as Ayam Buah Keluak, Sambal Sting Ray in Banana Leaf, Nyonya Chap Chye, Beef Cheek Rendang etc. Chef Then has has also come up with some interesting dishes such as Black Cod Fish Otah, Crabmeat Kueh Pie Tee with Buah Keluak Caviar and Chempedak Creme Brulee.

The worry about attending such Peranakan / Straits Cuisine themed buffets is that those who love such dishes often come with very high expectations, having had their palates refined from a very young age. To be more direct, there’s just no beating your grandmother’s or your mother’s version. There are however some gems that I’ll be mentioning below.
