It was an evening of elevated heart-rates as we gasped our way through Cirque Alice at the Sands Theatre. It’s been several years since I last attended a circus performance of this level, and I think no matter how many times you may watch it, it’s still a heart-stopping and mesmerising affair.
From the creator of “CIRQUE DU SOLEIL’S Mad Apple” and the Broadway smash hit “The Illusionists”, expect death-defying aerialists, mind-bending contortionists, exquisite puppetry, dancers and special guest musicians and comedic artists.
Much like the Cirque du Soleil style, Cirque Alice follows a loose storyline inspired by Alice in Wonderland, cleverly woven between the dazzling circus acts. These narrative moments aren’t mere time fillers during acrobat transitions — they offer a welcome chance to catch your breath after the heart-stopping stunts that keep you on edge.
I found myself genuinely grateful for those pauses, as each performance had me holding my breath, 95% convinced someone might come tumbling down or be flung off mid-air. Even the “filler” scenes stand on their own — witty and entertaining in their own right.
I was especially awestruck by the aerialists — their sheer upper body strength was nothing short of unbelievable. Each movement was executed with such grace and control that you wonder how much practice must have gone into this. Another jaw-dropping act came toward the end: a couple performing on roller skates. One partner spun the other in a lasso-like motion — an already nerve-wracking feat made even more astonishing by the fact that they were balancing on skates. I was sure the lady was seconds from being flung into space!
Don’t be surprised to find the performance stage nearer to the audience than you would expect as compared to a circular tent layout. It literally felt like the performers were but an arm’s length away from the nearest seating! Which made it all the more exhilarating and jaw-dropping! I’m just not sure about the VIP seats on stage, yes there are some! They might be closer to the performers, but the angle seems to be a bit tricky.
The accompanying music adds to the spectacle, giving the show a musical-theatre feel that draws you deeper into Wonderland. The costumes are another highlight — brilliantly designed, vibrant, and full of personality.
