Makan Expedition with Fiji Water

Food Expeditions aka Food Trails are getting more popular in Singapore it seems. People are no longer just satisfied dining in a nice restaurant, they now want to make an adventure out of it. And if you have a good weekend afternoon to spare, with some friends who are game enough to join you, I say why not? It’s money well spent, judging from the response garnered by the Fiji Water Signature Creations Expedition I attended last month.

You can read more about how the Fiji Water Signature Creations Expedition works here, but basically for $180, you get to try a signature dish each at 6 different restaurants, each paired with a glass of wine and FIJI Water. No need to worry about how to get around as we were chauffeured, and the whole event took 6 hours! After all the food and nearly unlimited amounts of wine, I saw many happy faces near the end of the day. Hic.

~~ Absinthe Restaurant Francais ~~

Absinthe (2)

We started off the event by gathering at Absinthe Restaurant at Boat Quay.  I’d been to Absinthe Restaurant Francaise only once a few years ago, and that was when they were still at Bukit Pasoh. I love dining at French restaurants. The meal usually spans 3 hours and even though it is expensive, you are paying for 3 hours of luxurious enjoyment. Definitely not for people who like gobbling down their food fast. Love the shop house location, woody tones with ornate touches here and there! I definitely want to come back to Absinthe again for lunch.

Foie Gras Terrine with Warm Brioche by Chef Francois Mermilliod (2)

Foie Gras Terrine with Brioche by Chef Francois Mermilliod Served with Konrad Gewurztraminer 2013

Looks like I am having 3 wines, but nope, only 2 glasses are mine. One was the bubbly they served to make sure all the guests start off on a happy note. The Foie Gras Terrine was EXCELLENT. It was smooth and silky, and in quite a generous portion, really the next best thing to eating foie gras itself. The warm brioche was really fluffy and buttery tasting and actually warm when served. Don’t you just hate the 1st world problem where your starter is so good that you want to eat it all, yet you worry it might fill you up too much and ruin your main meal?

Most unique cafes in Singapore

Here’s a list of what I think are the best cafes in Singapore to visit in terms of uniqueness. Enjoy!

1. Casa Verde at the Botanic Gardens

Visitors Centre, Singapore Botanic Gardens, Cluny Road Singapore 259569

A cafe nestled amongst the greenery of the Botanic Gardens, you can watch people walking their dogs and little kids playing by the plant fountains. A very relaxing place to be in, if you can get a seat!

2. Privé at Keppel Island

No.2 Keppel Bay Vista, Marina at Keppel Bay Singapore 098382

The cafe overlooks the Marina. While you may not own a yacht (yet), it’s never any harm to lust after someone else’s! Romantic and peaceful at night.

3. Epicurious at Robertson Quay

#01-02 The Quayside, Robertson Quay Tel: 6734-7720

Epicurious is touted to have the best breakfast in Singapore. It’s situated along the picturesque Robertson Quay area. After a hearty meal, you can take a stroll along the Singapore River and watch the boats go by.

4. Sunset Bay Garden Beach Bar at East Coast Park

1300 East Coast Park, Bougainvillea Garden (Carpark F2) Singapore 468964
Tel: 6448 9060

You definitely need a car to get here. Snag a seat facing the beach and you will be able to watch people flying kits as well as the numerous cyclists whizzing by.

5. Riders Cafe at Bukit Timah Saddle Club

51 Fairway Drive Singapore 286965

Rider’s cafe, who would have known you can dine amongst horses in Singapore???

6. Jams Cafe at Prologue Bookshop in Ion Mall

2 Orchard Turn Singapore 238801

Ok Jam’s cafe is the most accesible out of the entire list. It’s located at Ion Mall so you can just drop off at the Orchard MRT. Since it’s located in a bookshop, with glass windows for you to watch Orchard Road go by, your best bet is to buy a book and grab a seat here.

After knowing of Privé’s existence for more than 1 year, we finally found the opportunity to pay it a visit. The whole trip was like a mini excursion out of Singapore. In fact, we literally had to leave mainland Singapore and hop onto Keppel Bay Island in order to get to Privé. We didn’t have to take a ferry though. Keppel Bay Island is connected to mainland Singapore by the $30m Keppel Bay Bridge. Betcha didn’t know we even had a Keppel Bay Island!

Keppel Bay Island is extremely small, it’s almost impossible to miss the clubhouse where Privé is situated, because the clubhouse is practically the only building on the Island. It was drizzling the entire morning so it was the perfect opportunity to enjoy some al fresco dining. Everyone else had the same idea, so nobody was sitting in the air-conditioned area of Privé. Sitting outside also allows you to enjoy the idyllic view of the bobbing yachts on the waters.

There were quite a number of items on the menu that caught my eye, and we took quite a while to decide! I’d heard that the Cod Fish Burger $26 was excellent, and the Chicken Cordon  Bleu $22, Slipper Lobster Linguine $25, Duck Confit Pappardelle $23, Slow-Cooked Beef Cheek $26 also looked very interesting. Decisions decisions….in the end I ordered the LA Wagyu Beef Burger with fried egg and Monterey Jack cheese $26 while the Partner ordered the Organic Mushroom Linguine $18.

After 6.30pm, they also have a “small bites” menu where you can get a sampler of 3 mini wagyu burgers for only $18. What a shame it wasn’t available for lunch!

I loved the Beef Burger very much. The minced beef patty was very juicy and full of flavour. You could tell it was of good quality mince because there was very little fat in it. The only grouse is that I did find several bits of unchewable gristle in the patty.

Definitely going to return again to try out the other dishes as well as the desserts!

Prive - LA Wagyu Beef Burger LA Wagyu Beef Burger, Wagyu minced beef patty hiding under the sunny-side up. The burger looks a wee bit tiny, only because it’s on the far side of the plate.
