Bedok Mall is opening on 3rd December!

*Latest Update as at 12 Dec 2013: Bedok Mall is already open and super crowded, I really wonder where the people have come from! And it feels like more than  90% of the shops are already open for business. From what I saw today, places like Starbucks, ToastBox, Tim Ho Wan, Poulet, Itacho, SK Jewellery, G2000, Charles & Keith, Faces of Spade etc are open. But FairPrice Finest will only be open on 14 Dec 2013 onwards!

Really long queues at all the popular restaurants! Eg by 6.30pm, Tim Ho Wan already had a snaking queue outside their restaurant, and by 7pm, you would have had to wait at least 15 minutes or more at Itacho sushi!

Amazing news! For those of you who are living in the East, rejoice because Bedok Mall will be opening on 3rd December! Yes, even though the mall still looks half complete, the insides must be already all spruced up and ready to invite the Christmas shoppers!

Some fun facts about Bedok Mall

  • Already 100% leased
  • 200,000 sqft or approx the size of Junction 8
  • About 200 shops spread across 3 floors
  • Approx 250 carpark lots (doesn’t sound like a lot!)
  • Bedok Mall’s basement 2 is linked to Bedok MRT
  • Bedok Bus Interchange will be above the Bedok Mall
  • Bedok Residences condo will continue to be built even after Bedok Mall opens

Bollywood Veggies

You must visit Bollywood Veggies if you are planning to visit the Kranji Countryside in Singapore. Yes, if you didn’t know, we do have a “countryside” of sorts, a tiny haven for those who wish to escape the materialistic city, even if for a while. Even though this area is nothing compared to the vast farmlands in Malaysia and other countries, because it’s Singapore’s very own, the idea of exploring Kranji Countryside makes you feel like you’re on an adventure!

Bollywood Veggies is a mini farm with bistro, run by Ivy Singh-Lim, the current President of Kranji Countryside Association, and her husband Lim Ho Seng. It’s really an iconic place to visit. Ivy is very vocal with her thoughts on some of the government’s policies, and the place is dotted with interesting questions that every ought to ask. My colleagues and I were there to check out the Poison Ivy bistro located onsite, but we couldn’t resist taking a quick tour of the vegetable farm before returning to our cubicles at the office.

Bollywood Veggies - Warrior's Platter $40 (2)

The Warrior’s Platter $40 -  It’s basically all the dishes of the day plus rice. We were served banana Curry, Chicken Wings, Assam Fish, Tofu Lemak, Spiced Yellow Lentils, Chicken in coconut, and moringa tempura right in the centre.

Riders Cafe Revisited

I’ve always been amazed with the tranquil location of Rider’s Cafe. I guess it’s no surprise from the name that Rider’s Cafe is located within the Bukit Timah Saddle Club. It is located just off Eng Neo Avenue, in a woody and forested area that is next to impossible to get to via public transport as it is nearly a kilometre from the main road and pitch dark at night. I’d been to Rider’s Cafe several years back on a weekend at about 4pm, and we were one of the few customers there. Imagine my surprise when we went there for lunch on a week day and it was packed! It was a Friday, but still!!

Rider's Cafe (9)

There is no air-con at Riders Cafe but you will hardly miss it because there are fans all over the place, and also the greenery helps take the heat away. Those people sitting at the veranda have the view of the horse training area.

Rider's Cafe - Death by Chocolate Cake $13 (1)

Death by Chocolate Cake $13

Since it was a birthday celebration, let me start by introducing the cake that we ordered. The chocolate cake was SERIOUSLY GOOD and totally lived up to it’s name. It is so chocolaty and as if that is not enough, it is swimming in a generous pool of chocolate sauce. And there are hidden pieces of chunky chocolate bits within the cake. I hardly think that a chocolate cake can go much more chocolatey than this. But of course, as with all things in life, there must be balance, so here you go, a vanilla ice cream to join the crowd and make things more sublime. This is definitely one of the best chocolate cakes I have eaten in recent times. If you need to find some comforting chocolate cake, this would be it.

Intrepid Gastro Bar–A taste of Melbourne in Singapore

2 weekends ago, I was kindly invited to check out the relatively new Intrepid Gastro Bar at Far East Square. Intrepid Gastro Bar is a Melbourne-inspired eatery that aims to serve Melbourne-inspired cuisine with a great selection of craft beers. You can get Kangaroo and Crocodile meet here, mates!

I was quite keen to check out this place because everyone knows about Melbourne’s great coffee culture. Also, I had a friend who would have been returning from his travels in Melbourne and I wanted to be able to surprise him with this great find, should he be missing Melbourne. By the way, did you know you can get AUD$1 coffees in Melbourne? Insane right, what are we doing wrong in Singapore?

Intrepid Gastro Bar (5)

So, does this look authentically Melbournian? I have been to Melbourne years ago, but I was too young to appreciate the coffee culture back then. Pity, because we didn’t visit a single cafe when we were there. I’ve been to Sydney, Brisbane and Perth (twice!!) since so I really want to visit Melbourne again soon.

Intrepid Gastro Bar Brunch Spread

We were at Intrepid Gastro Bar to check out the brunch menu, and boy do they have a great number of dishes on the menu for the choosy eater. There are many cafes serving brunch these days, but many of these cafes serve only a handful of brunch dishes, offering just the usual suspects like eggs benedict or a simple egg, sausage and bacon fry up. I love the wide variety of brunch and lunch dishes you can get here, which is I suppose inspired by the eclectic and diverse cuisine that is what Melbourne is all about. Dr Seuss fans, you can get your green eggs and ham here!

Cooking with Masterchef Christophe Grilo

The Partner and I were invited to a French culinary masterclass conducted by Masterchef Christophe Grilo at Nourish Studios and hosted by Dettol.

Masterchef Christophe Grilo

Bonjour Masterchef Christophe Grilo. He also runs his own business Bakery Artisan Original.

Like us I’m sure you’re wondering “huh, cooking with Dettol?” No, Dettol is not moving into the grocery business or opening restaurants. Instead, Dettol wants to highlight the importance of kitchen hygiene and how their products can help to keep your kitchen clean. I’ve never really viewed Dettol as being particularly important in the kitchen arena, because to me, Dettol is about disinfecting toilets or soaps for scrubbing bodies. It was good to attend this event to find out what other products Dettol has up their sleeves.

Dettol Products

All your favourite Dettol products.

Sometimes when we prepare meals we can have unwanted visitors that take days to get over. No, I’m not talking about uninvited relatives, I’m talking about E.coli, salmonella and other bacteria. Every year millions of people around the world poison themselves unnecessarily due to poor kitchen hygiene.
