The Fabulous Baker Boy Cafe revamped!

The Fabulous Baker Boy cafe at the foothills of Fort Canning Park has gone through a renovation and is now more comfortable than ever before because it is now TOTALLY AIR-CONDITIONED! I visited once several months back prior to the renovation and despite the cafe looking really nice and like a place I would want to spend my time chilling out in, chilling out was the last thing on my mind due to the sweltering heat. This time round, when I visited with my colleagues, it was a much more pleasant experience, with us being able to look out into the gardens and to enjoy the views minus the heat.

The Fabulous Baker Boy cafe is one of those cafes which I would consider to be all-rounded cafe, meaning they’re good at cakes, coffee and food! You can’t run away from the baked goods here, it’s quite obvious from the name of the cafe wouldn’t you agree? I had the opportunity to catch a glimpse of Chef-Owner Juwanda assembling his cakes together, and I could sense a serenity and contentment in him as his fingers deftly put together pieces of sponge and cream into the finished cakes. Quite different from when I’m trying to ice my cakes, I can tell you that.

Town Restaurant South African Food Festival Buffet

The Fullerton Hotel’s Town Restaurant, together with Taj Cape Town and South African Airways, will be presenting the fascinating South African cuisine from 21 to 27 April in a special dinner buffet. Traversing the globe to present the best from their country in Singapore, in conjunction with South Africa’s Freedom Day on 27 April, are Guest Chefs Vivian Gary Solomon and Lloyd Mark De Stadler.

Savour the unique bounty of flavours from the culturally diverse "rainbow nation" in classic dishes like Bobotie, Seafood Potjie, Venison Fillet in Sour Cream Marinade, Braised beef with Port Sauce and Chicken, Bacon & Banana Kebabs with Spicy Marinade. Many of the ingredients not available in Singapore were specially flown in from South Africa to replicate as unique a taste as possible.

Symmetry Cafe at Jalan Kubor

The Kampong Glam area is becoming more hip with the proliferation of cafes sprouting out. You might have heard of the popular Symmetry Cafe, as it was one of the front runners to locate in this area I think a couple of years back. Even back in 2012, seats were hard to come by, and it’s a statement to their food and coffee that the queues are no shorter even after all this time, and with the competition across the road.

An interesting thing to note, which I suppose most Chinese Singaporeans won’t realise is Jalan Kubor, which is the street where Symmetry Cafe is located, means Tomb street! Quite apt for a road name, as Jalan Kubor is a long street cutting through a Malay cemetery just across Victoria Street. Don’t worry, Symmetry Cafe is on the other side of Victoria Street, which for some reason is still called Jalan Kubor.

There is nothing freaky about Symmetry Cafe, unless you want to count in those near life-sized dolls sitting outside the cafe all day long.

Symmetry Cafe - (24)

Symmetry Cafe is one of those cafes that serves good food as well as good third wave coffee. The food menu here is quite extensive as compared to the average cafe these days, which is good because then there’s even more reason to visit, rather than just for cakes and coffee. The menu is on the expensive side though for a cafe, with most mains being $20 and above. We had the brunch menu when we were there but Symmetry Cafe serves lunch and dinner menus too.

Straits Cuisine at Orchard Cafe

Orchard Hotel’s Orchard Cafe has relaunched its “Straits Cuisine” buffet where you can savour Peranakan dishes, traditional roasts, seafood options and all-time local favourites. This is really one buffet where you won’t find any cooked Western dishes, which attests to the passion that Orchard Cafe, Executive Chef Paul Then and his team of chefs have for the buffet spread they have come up with.

Straits Cuisine at Orchard Cafe

Available at the Straits Cuisine buffet spread includes familiar favourites such as Ayam Buah Keluak, Sambal Sting Ray in Banana Leaf, Nyonya Chap Chye, Beef Cheek Rendang etc. Chef Then has has also come up with some interesting dishes such as Black Cod Fish Otah, Crabmeat Kueh Pie Tee with Buah Keluak Caviar and Chempedak Creme Brulee.

The worry about attending such Peranakan / Straits Cuisine themed buffets is that those who love such dishes often come with very high expectations, having had their palates refined from a very young age. To be more direct, there’s just no beating your grandmother’s or your mother’s version. There are however some gems that I’ll be mentioning below.

Craftsmen Specialty Coffee

The cafes have heeded my call and are now slowly popping up in the Eastern part of Singapore! Check out this new Craftsmen Specialty Coffee, which opened just a couple of weeks back at Siglap V, opposite the old Siglap Centre. It’s a pretty spacious cafe as they haven’t packed the place to the gills with seating. When I was there around 4 plus pm yesterday on Good Friday, it was nearly full. And when I left at about 5 plus pm, it was nearly empty.

With a name like Craftsmen Specialty Coffee, you know the emphasis here is on coffee. You want V-60, Chemex, Siphon, Woodneck and Cold Brew, they have it here. For me, while I like to think of myself as a coffee lover, my coffee drinking repertoire stops at cafe latte and flat white. I’ve tried Chemex and Cold Brews before elsewhere, but I suppose my palate was not refined enough to really appreciate the flavours. Give me a cafe latte anytime.

Just to add, apart from a selection of 3 quiches and 2 sandwiches, Craftsmen Specialty Coffee does not appear to be serving any other types of food requiring onsite preparation. At least not for now.

Cafe Latte $4.50

And so a cafe latte I got. If you feel that the saucers and cups remind you of Dutch Colony Cafe, you are right, because they have invested here. The cafe latte was pretty enjoyable, strong aroma although it had a slight bitter aftertaste yet not a robust body.
