Rabbit Carrot Gun

Yes… the name is weird for a cafe I know, but apparently this is the British version of Scissors Paper Stone. Here’s how it’s played:

Gun wins over Rabbit : Gun shoots Rabbit

Rabbit wins over Carrot : Rabbit eats Carrot

Carrot wins over Gun : Carrot can be stuffed into the Gun

So my question is…why can’t the Carrot win over the Rabbit by stuffing it up the Rabbit’s….

Easties rejoice, for we now have another cafe in the Eastern part of Singapore. Rabbit Carrot Gun is along East Coast Road, you know the row of shop houses directly opposite 112 Katong Mall. When I was there a month back, they were still in the midst of renovating the next door unit to turn it into a British Pub. I should return to check it out again.

As for Rabbit Carrot Gun itself, the food is British inspired, because the owner is from the UK. I was there only for brunch on the weekend, so I didn’t get to peruse the main menu, but I think there are a lot of interesting items. The brunch menu is unfortunately, extremely limited. If you’re not the muesli, then there’s basically only the big breakfast or the eggs benedict in several ways. This is what we had.

My father as usual had the eggs florentine, which is poached eggs served on a bed of spinach served with homemade hollandaise sauce. As he almost always chooses eggs benedict/eggs florentine at all the brunch places we go to, he is the expert when it comes to eggs benedict. The portion at Rabbit Carrot Gun was a little on the small side for the price. Also, the bread base looked rather plain, as compared to the homemade bread types or brioche that you can get elsewhere. The eggs florentine tasted quite okay, not too bad, but certainly not something you would be keen to return in a hurry. I suppose this would be good for people who like their eggs benedict mild, and not covered in a ton of buttery hollandaise sauce.

What to eat at Tanjong Katong Road

Being an Eastie, I think the least I could do is to help raise the profile of the eateries, restaurants and cafes in the Eastern part of Singapore. I used to complain that there aren’t many nice cafes in the East, like in places like Holland Village and Tiong Bahru. But I think Tanjong Katong is shaping up to becoming an eating destination too with the slew of cafes, ice cream parlours and Italian restaurants that now reside here. Traffic is quite bad along East Coast Road, and parking may be hard to find especially in the vicinity of 112 Katong. Tanjong Katong Road sure seems more laid back.

Google Maps isn’t very updated, so let me help you decide on where to eat at Tanjong Katong Road. I’ll be posting the pictures going in the direction of Marine Parade, ie from right to left.

Pies and Coffee

Recently the Partner wanted to have his cake and eat it, so we drove down Tanjong Katong Road to try our luck. There are quite a number of eateries along Tanjong Katong Road, but they’re mostly full-fledged eateries or for some inexplicable reason, ice-cream shops. Now if you’re hankering after ice-cream, you have to come to Tanjong Katong Road because there are at least 3 ice-cream cafes to choose from in that short stretch!

I used to think that the East was lacking in coffee hangout places, but I’m glad to report back that the situation is slowly changing. It’s still not as good as what I would like it to be (think Duxton Hill, Tiong Bahru etc), but the East is slowly heating up! The amazing thing about Tanjong Katong Road is that every time I drive past, I spy yet another new eatery! I’m hoping for the day when Tanjong Katong Road becomes the Holland V or Duxton Hill of the East!

Pies and Coffee - Hot Chocolate $5 (2)

This time round, I was in luck, cuz I spied TWO new cafes sited near to each other. We checked out Pies and Coffee since the other one seemed to have run out of cakes. If Pies and Coffee sounds familiar, that’s because they have another outlet in Rochester Mall, opened in 2011. I haven’t been to the Rochester Mall outlet, but from the pictures, it seems the Tanjong Katong outlet is much smaller, fitting about 6 tables indoors, and 4 al-fresco.

I have heard that their pies are pretty good. Wouldn’t it be funny if they weren’t? Anyway, we were there for desserts and coffee so this is what we had.

Luscious chocolate cake or chocolate almond tart? In the end I went for the Chocolate Almond Tart as I wanted to compare it with my favourite chocolate tart from 40Hands in Tiong Bahru.

I have to say, the 40Hands chocolate tart still is the best chocolate tart I have ever tasted. It’s way smaller, only about the size of your palm. but the chocolate is much thicker and firmer, resulting in a much richer taste and texture in the mouth. The tart case enveloping the chocolate is also more buttery. So even though it’s small and costs $9, it’s worth every penny.

The Chocolate Almond Tart from Pies and Coffee is very good too. In terms of texture, the chocolate is slightly softer but the added almonds makes up for it. Have you tried the Chocolate Mendiant from Tiong Bahru Bakery? The texture is similar, but the Mendiant is slightly richer and sweeter. In terms of size, this tart wins hands down as 3 people were able to share it without quarrelling. In totality, because the Chocolate Almond Tart is bigger, you still feel like you’ve had a rich and sinful treat.

Chock Full of Beans Revisited

It’s been a while since I had brunch with my parents. Several weekends were burned just preparing for the photo-shoot and trip to New Zealand. And then of course I was away for the trip itself, so that was another 2 weekends.

My parents don’t quite fancy Western food, but brunch is something they don’t mind. My father will order Eggs Benedict 99% of the time while my mother’s eyes will hover all over the menu trying to find a healthy dish even though she secretly wants some meat. My mother is the healthiest in my family and eschews fatty food and meat if she can. But I mean what’s the fun in going for brunch if she’s going to order Eggs Benedict too? The eggs are poached, so she has deemed it healthy enough. The following is a typical scenario.

Daughter : Order this big breakfast

Mother : But it has fried sausages in it.

Daughter : Just order it. Or you want the Bircher Muesli instead?

Mother : Okay are you really sure I should order the big breakfast?

Daugher : Yes.

And later the plate will be clean. You see, it’s fine if I’m the bad guy.

I might have mentioned before that I really don’t like going back to the same place twice when there are so many new eateries to explore. This rule goes out the window when it comes to where to eat in the East. Is it just me or do Easties think that there is a severe shortage of cool cafes in the East of Singapore? I cracked my brain real hard and I only managed to summon up Chock Full of Beans, a small little cafe in Changi Village. My parents were game for it as we had a good dinner there the last time. I caved in for a lack of better suggestions, and also because it was brunch we were going to try out this time round.

The menu actually lists Omelette with 3 fillings, but I asked to have scrambled eggs instead, which Chock Full of Beans kindly obliged.

Oh before I describe the eggs, let me first give a shout out to these lovely grilled tomatoes. They were just beautiful. Grilled perfectly such that they retained their juiciness, I love how the sweet taste of the tomatoes went so well with the smoky flavour of the bit of cracked black pepper.
