Goodbye Au Jardin Restaurant!

Did you know that Au Jardin at the Singapore Botanic Gardens will be closing soon? You probably have less than a month to dine there and bid it adieu! I was so glad to be able to dine at Au Jardin one last time, for my birthday celebration last week. Au Jardin has a special place in my heart for many reasons. The most obvious reason is that it’s such a beautiful restaurant, sited in EJH Corner House, a conservation status black and white colonial building formerly occupied by the Assistant Director of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. And of course, the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Singapore’s most illustrious garden park, may soon receive the UNESCO world heritage site status!

I have been to Au Jardin countless times for business, but only once previously for a leisurely meal. Visiting Au Jardin again this time round for my birthday was bittersweet. Even though I have been here many times, the feeling of stepping into this time capsule once again was no less magical. The food here is great, service exemplary, and the ambience is hard to beat. I dare say no other place in Singapore quite exudes such a unique character and history as this restaurant. I will be sad to see Au Jardin go, and I’m sure many who have experienced the hospitality of Au Jardin will feel the same. If it’s any consolation, EJH Corner House will still remain the same though, at least facade wise, as this is a conservation status building. A new restaurant will take over the space, so watch out for my review in time to come.

We were there for the set lunch. Compared to the dinner ala carte menu, the set lunch is much more wallet friendly at $45++. It’s a 3 course meal plus petit fours and coffee or tea. I would have loved to savour the meal over 3 hours, like I always do when it comes to fine-dining, but alas the Partner had to go back to work!

**Absinthe refreshes their menu every 3 months. If you’re ordering the Hamachi, Saint Jacques or Créme Brulée, it will look and taste slightly different from what I had during my visit.

When it comes to fine dining, the French are experts at it. All my favourite fine-dining restaurants are French, from Au Jardin to Absinthe to Brasserie Les Saveurs! And let’s not forget all those French restaurants I dined at during my Honeymoon in France? The experience was sublime!

What I like about dining at a French restaurant is that the entire experience of going to the restaurant isn’t just solely about the meal. Of course, the meal has to be exquisite. But It’s also about the ambience, the service and the conversation. 3 hours of luxuriating, this is not for those like to gobble their food quickly as if someone’s going to take the plate away soon. My only grouse with these romantic restaurants? The dim lighting makes for lousy photos!

Our evening at Absinthe Restaurant Francais ticked all the boxes. The ambience was fantastic. Absinthe is located in one of the historic shop houses along Boat Quay. They have done a really good job in making full use and bringing out the character of the shophouse. The dim lighting, the portraits of 1800s women, even the drapes on the windows alluded to a Paris of yesteryear. I had been to Absinthe once several years ago when they were still located at Bukit Pasoh. The boat quay outlet is definitely much more spacious and less noisy.

A friend of my father’s just got married at one of the most romantic restaurants in Singapore, ie Au Jardin. It was one of the venues I was seriously considering for my wedding last year, but because the maximum capacity is 60, I had to give this idea a miss. I really love the look and feel of the Au Jardin restaurant. I mean, Au Jardin is situated in a  historic colonial building located in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, how much more romantic can you get? And if the Singapore Botanic Gardens manages to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’ll be bragging rights to the max! Alas, Au Jardin will be closing down by April 2014. Guest registration table. It’s nice to have an intimate wedding. No need to crack your head as to whether all your guests are going to turn up or not, as with only 60 people to invite, they will all be really close friends and family. But of course, the traditional Chinese way is to invite way more than this.

Brasserie Les Saveurs Christmas Dinner

It’s less than 20 days to Christmas! Have you made plans for Christmas yet? Be it a sit-down home-cooked meal, a party at a friend’s place, or dinner at a fancy restaurant, DO SOMETHING and let your hair down! It’s the festive season and it would be a pity to spend it like any other day. Make the holidays count! It’s no secret that I love Christmas time. I love all the pretty lights and I love the idea of giving and receiving presents. That’s the very reason why I chose to get married in December (although I am beginning to realise that it ain’t that great an idea….no time to enjoy the festivities!)

If you wanna surprise a special someone, at a really special and romantic restaurant, you may like to consider Brasserie Les Saveurs at the St Regis. It is the most romantic, pretty and posh restaurant I have dined at, really it is the whole package! Of course it doesn’t come cheap, but it’s a once a year thing, I say go for it!

Lucky me, this Christmas tasting is my 2nd visit to Brasserie Les Saveurs! The first time, I enjoyed a lovely 3 course dinner during Restaurant Week with my BFF. It was an amazing experience and I’m glad to report back that the feeling hasn’t changed even after my 2nd visit. Brasserie Les Saveurs – Restaurant Week March 2012

After a not so spectacular Restaurant Week experience a year ago at Magma restaurant, I skipped the next Restaurant Week event. I wasn’t planning on going for this year’s Restaurant Week either, but when Amex sent me an enticing email saying “PRORITY BOOKINGS ENDS TONIGHT!”, I succumbed and clicked on the email….just to you know, check out the restaurants without really intending to make a reservation.

I was actually still mixed after perusing the list of restaurants. I asked the Partner if he would like to go and he said “OK but you decide on the restaurant”, which totally didn’t make things any easier. I casually told a friend who was on MSN about Restaurant Week and to my surprise he was keen to attend! Not only was he keen, he didn’t mind going on a Monday night to a restaurant that listed its menu as “Surprise Menu”. OK fine let’s just plunge in and hope for the best! So with trepidation, I clicked “Book table for 2 at St Regis Brasserie Les Saveurs”.

I am so glad we went for Restaurant Week cuz the meal we had at Brasserie Les Saveurs was totally fantastic. The ambience was good, the food was good, the service was good. Really I couldn’t ask for more, except perhaps a little more lighting because the food photos didn’t turn out too good. But then again, more lighting would have changed the mood of the place. Next time I’ll bring a torch.

Normal Restaurant Set Dinners are at $35++ each, but St Regis Brasserie Les Saveurs is considered as one of the high end restaurants so an additional $20++ was imposed. Still, it’s worth the money as most of the ala carte main courses are well over $40++ already.

Brasserie Les Saveurs - Bread Basket (2) The usual bread basket served before the commencement of the meal. Bread was nice and warm in its covered basket. Love the tub of French butter provided! Decadence! My friend polished it off entirely.

Brasserie Les Saveurs - Gaspacho Amuse Bouche Amuse bouche of gaspacho served. Refreshing vegetable concoction with a dollop of cream. The cream is supposed to be mixed into the gaspacho but it was so lovely I couldn’t stop eating it on its own.

Brasserie Les Saveurs - Foie Gras Terrine - Duck Foie Gras Terrine and Roasted Figs with Balsamic vinegar and Mesclun Salad (2) Duck Foie Gras Terrine and Roasted Figs with Balsamic vinegar and Mesclun Salad. Heavenly melt in the mouth rich duck foie gras. Brioche was provided but I felt it was just in the way of me enjoying the terrine in all it’s naked glory. I had to stop myself from finishing it all off or I would be too full to enjoy the main course. I didn’t let the waitstaff clear it either until after desserts, just IN CASE. My dining companion sniggered at me for consuming so much fat. Ya lah he had the healthy soup for starters, but need I remind him that he ate the entire tub of butter?

Brasserie Les Saveurs - Spicy Roasted Tomato Soup with olives and basil (2)-tile   Spicy Tomato soup with olives and basil. Soup came separately from the condiments! I had a spoonful and thought it to be delightfully refreshing with a nice sour tang from the tomatoes.
