One-Ninety

Will be getting married at 4 Seasons Hotel. On the day that we signed the contract, we were treated to a lovely meal at One-Ninety Restaurant. We were too busy discussing the contract details hence I didn’t even realise that I hadn’t noted down the menu prices. Heck, I’ve also forgotten exactly what we ate, given that this all happened more than half a year ago. Still, I don’t want to waste the nice pictures I’ve taken so this shall be a pictorial review!

OneNinety - Chocolate Cake

4 Seasons Signature chocolate cake! Costs about $10 and is decadent like hell! A normal human would not be able to finish this piece so it’s best to share. Love the intense and heavy chocolate fudge on top, with a thick and crispy granola base. I don’t even think there’s any sponge cake in this chocolate on a plate!

OneNinety - Chocolate Gelato

This chocolate ice cream $15 is another good choice to order if you’re hankering after something chocolaty and sweet. The ice cream is deeply chocolaty, aided by generous amounts of chocolate fudge and crispy cocopop bits. You know what, for my wedding day, AFTER the wedding, I’m going to order myself this chocolate ice cream and just relaxxxxx after the excitement of the day.

Daikokuya at myVillage

As part of the not so long ago invite to sample the delights of myVillage at Serangoon Gardens, the best of the best Singapore Food Bloggers including 365days2play 🙂 got acquainted with Daikokuya at myVillage. It’s one of the smallest restaurants I’ve ever seen, with about 10 tables of 4! It can get a little cramped if you are in a big group. We were introduced to the the Chef, who explained that the miso paste used in the soup stock is painstakingly made with great care.

Little bowls of ramen were then dished out for us to try. I normally am quite picky with ramen. Many ramen places disappoint me with their bland and lifeless soup. True to what Daikokuya’s Chef was describing, the ramen that we tried that day, I believe is the Stamina Ramen as well as the Original Miso Ramen, was very delicious. The soups tasted rich and had an oomph. I don’t really know how else to describe it except to say that the taste makes you want to keep slurping up more, which I suppose is the ultimate taste test.

So I kinda had pretty high hopes when I brought my parents to try out Daikokuya several weeks after the media event. Unfortunately, because we’re such ardent fans of Sushi Tei for it’s quality sushi/sashimi and value for money prices, we naturally compared Daikokuya to Sushi Tei. Daikokuya - Daikokuya Original Salad Daikokuya - Daikokuya Original Salad (2)

Daikokuya Original Salad $7.90 – Salad of salmon slices, avocados amongst a huge bed of vegetables. For $7.90, we were quite wowed by the size of the salad. The vegetables were fresh and crunchy. The light sauce also tasted very nice and was a refreshing difference from the heavier sushi tei dressing we are used to. However, we felt that the amount of salmon served was pretty paltry. For $3 more at Sushi Tei, we would have been able to get many more thick slices.

Daikokuya - Stamina Ramen

Stamina Ramen – This was one of the ramen we tried during the media invite. Don’t you think the little bowl looks so cute? In western restaurants, they have mixed platters for you to try out all the house specialities. I think it would be great if Daikokuya could come up with something similar. Like 4 bowls of small ramen. I would love to try that. Then I can finally taste Shio, Shoyu, and Miso soup bases all in 1 sitting.  Btw I think Stamina ramen is only available at the myVillage outlet.

Daikokuya - Vegetable Miso Ramen

Vegetable Miso Ramen $12.80 – You know, I’ve never heard of ramen without any meat before. Was quite apprehensive when ordering this, but it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. I forgot to ask if the stock is vegetarian as well, but it sure tasted very rich and flavourful despite that. The vegetables had a nice crunch and added sweetness to the broth. For those who don’t fancy chomping on Cha shu, this vegetable miso ramen would be a good option.

Daikokuya - Original Miso Ramen

Daikokuya Original Ramen $13.80 – I have no complaints about the broth. It’s really flavourful and makes you want to take sip after sip after sip. It is on the heavy side so I wasn’t able to finish it all in the end. However, I didn’t like the noodle texture. I’ve always been a fan of the springy Q Q type of noodles (think Marutama and Tom Ton) and the one at Daikokuya is the chewy type.

Daikokuya - Seafood Shio Ramen

Seafood Shio Ramen $13.80 – Don’t believe you can get seafood ramen easily in Singapore? It’s a refreshing change although there was nothing particularly spectacular about the prawns in this case.

Daikokuya - Unagi Don

Unagi Don $6.80 – Thought this was one of the most value for money items at Daikokuya, and especially good for light eaters.

Tonkatsu and Ebi Fry Curry Rice $14.80 – We had this on 2 separate occasions. The experience from the 1st time was pretty good. The meat itself is very tender and doesn’t taste oily even though it has been coated in batter and deep fried. The curry was also pretty tasty and together with the tonkatsu, made for a good meal. I would skip the Ebi Fry though as the prawns are super tiny when compared to the amount of batter used.

However, on the 2nd occasion, there seemed to be a weird taste coming from the curry. The weird taste was so strong it was detectable just by sniffing at the curry! The staff said it was due to the special blend of spices in the curry which we may not be used to. They gave us a new serving of curry but the weird taste was still there. As a hunch I took a sip from the glass of water I’d been served earlier, and the weird taste was there too, albeit less strong. I think perhaps Daikokuya should consider changing the dishwashing liquid used as it’s permeating through the food and drink?

Conclusion: Go because of the ramen. Other items in the menu are a hit and miss.

Real Food at Central

I’m always on the look out for places which serve organic, healthy and delicious food and I was shocked to discover that one such place exists at The Central since last year! As you know, I used to work around that area and it would have been great if I could have had the opportunity to introduce this gem of a place to my meat loving and organic abhorring colleagues.

So I finally made it down to Real Food yesterday, with my parents and the Partner in tow. Real Food is fairly large for a cafe, and we managed to get seats without any problems. Aside from cooked meals, Real Food also has a small section featuring organic groceries, and books.

According to the Real Food website, all their meals, dressings and sauces are made from scratch using basic organic ingredients. Absolutely no artificially processed ingredients, preservatives, trans-fats and colouring is used. Most of the dishes are vegan, meaning they contain no animal products including milk or eggs. There are some egg dishes though, like the poached egg sourdough sandwich.

We skimmed through the menu. Everything sounded really delicious, and it was great to know that they would all be healthy and organic. My mother (a health fanatic) even exclaimed that for the 1st time, she could order anything she wanted without having to think twice about it’s nutritional value!

In the end, my father and the Partner settled for the fried rice, my mother took the stuffed salad while I ordered the dumpling noodles.

Real Food - Fried Brown Rice

Fried Rice $6.80 – Brown rice stir-fried with garlic (on request), pineapple, capsicum, French beans, carrots, mushrooms, black pepper and fresh corn. After trying the 3 main dishes we ordered, I found this to be the best tasting. Obviously one reason is that the rice is fried. But the great thing is that it doesn’t taste oily and heavy. On the contrary, the rice is very light but firm and hardly feels fried. There is a lot of crunch to it thanks to the diced vegetables. The dish feels substantial even though there is no meat at all. I loved this dish very much and I would most definitely order this again when I am back.

Real Food - Organic dumplings  with wholegrain ramen noodles

Dumpling Noodles Dry 8.80 – Special handmade dumplings, wholegrain ramen noodles with green leafy vegetables, cherry tomatoes, and a side of vegetable soup. The special dumplings are really delicious as they contain at least 10 ingredients in them including diced carrots, mushrooms and chestnuts. They were so nice, I wish there was more filling in the dumplings. The noodles I didn’t fancy so much. The texture was a little soggy. Hey and I just realised that I wasn’t given the soup!!!!

Stuffed Veggie Salad 9.80 – Grilled organic capsicum, filled with a homemade patty made from grated beetroot and carrots, mashed potatoes, onions and fresh thyme. When the salad arrived, we were like, “oh my god, is that the salad we ordered? It’s huge!” According to the staff, all their salads here are very substantial. I loved the stuffing inside the capsicum. It has a very special taste which just had me craving for more. I wonder if they use this stuffing in their sandwiches as well, it would be worth a try. The rest of the salad was a bit more normal, with the stuffed capsicums being the stars of the dish.

Real Food - Slow Pressed Beetroot Carrot Juice and Carrot Ginger Pineapple Juice

Slow pressed juice – $4.60 The front one is beetroot carrot, while the back one is carrot, ginger, pineapple. Pretty affordable prices, considering that the juice is slow pressed, with no added ice or water. BTW, beetroot is really good for health and so delicious when combined with carrot juice or apple juice. I know those of you out there unaccustomed to drinking vegetable juice might think of beetroot juice as being totally repulsive. Trust me, it’s DELICIOUS! It’s sweet and refreshing and the juice doesn’t taste like it originated from a vegetable!

I’ve been thinking of getting a slow pressed juicer myself. I did some basic research and it seems you can get a single gear one for about $450. Double geared ones are better, but far more expensive, like maybe $1000? Conventional juicers, the ones that go at high speed and make a heck of a noise, they create so much heat they kill off the enzymes in the juice. That’s why its far better to get a slow/cold pressed juicer for the full health benefits.

I know I know, eating the fruit fresh is the best way to go. But let’s face it, I really don’t foresee myself munching carrots and beetroots the minute I hop out of bed in the morning. Down a cup of juice to get vital nutrients, I still can manage.

Real Food - Hazelnut, Mulberry and Vanilla Ice Cream made with rice milk

Vegan Ice Cream $4.50 for 3 scoops – Rice milk is used instead of milk. I tried the hazelnut flavoured one and it’s pretty good. The texture is practically the same as normal ice cream. Almost can’t tell that it’s not made from milk. The mulberry one has a texture and taste similar to that of frozen yoghurt. It’s the vanilla flavoured one that you can really tell that this isn’t real ice cream. The texture is somewhat rough and the vanilla almost tastes medicinal if you think hard about it. The girl manning the ice cream stand is very helpful. Ask her for free samples!

On the whole, I think that the food here is very reasonably priced. Organic ingredients tend to be more expensive, yet the most of the main dishes only cost $6-$12. And despite the food being vegan, our dishes were tasty and satiated us. We will definitely return again. The groceries at the grocer section seemed over priced, so we didn’t buy anything. For example, the Fairtrade coffee costs about $9 at a normal supermarket but Real Food was selling it at $12. The little bookshop stocks books with a healthy mind healthy body theme, good for those who are searching for books on natural healing etc.

Juiced Rawbars

Decided to go really healthy today by having a salad meal instead of the usual Chinese 2 veg 1 meat dish (“Fan Cai”). I used to think that you couldn’t go much healthier than that, until an American, who interned at my office, commented that he couldn’t stand the Fan Cai anymore and just had to have something healthy that day. I was like, what on earth? How can rice and stir-fried vegetables not be healthy? I mean like KFC and MacDonalds are unhealthy, but surely not rice with dishes???? Apparently he eats salads and sandwiches with lots of raw veggies in them. Thanks to him, I now always have a twinge of guilt when eating Fan Cai, which used to be so “normal”!!!

Anyway, salad it was today, and I must say, this is kinda like the best salad you can find in Singapore. There aren’t many establishments with salad as their main focus in Singapore. In fact, this is probably the only one.  For $8.50, you get to get a their Rawbar leaf-mix, which you then add on 6 more items from their salad selection. There are things like kidney beans, snow peas, cucumbers, egg, tofu, tomatoes and the like. Then choose from like 10 different types of dressing and you’re ready to go. The vegetables are really crunchy and fresh tasting. Apparently any left overs are chucked at the end of the day, so you are guaranteed a fresh selection each day. This is the only establishment I know that has more Ang Mohs than locals.
