Marina Bay Sands Rise Restaurant

Rise Restaurant at Marina Bay Sands has been open for a couple of years now. I’m sure most buffet fanatics out there would have tried this buffet by now. I’ve dined at Rise Restaurant on a couple of occasions but they were always ala carte orders. So I decided the time was ripe to take my parents for a nice lunch at Rise Restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised by the pricing. $49++ for weekend lunch buffet makes Rise Restaurant a very value-for-money buffet, don’t you think? This is especially when you consider the size of the spread.

Even though I look like I’ve been gorging on buffets quite often these past few months, the truth is that I haven’t actually gone for a lunch or dinner buffet in about a year! All the previous buffets you’ve read about on this blog this year were Afternoon Tea buffets, which ahem, is quite different from a lunch/dinner buffet!

Rise Restaurant Marina Bay Sands - Dessert Station

I’m a sucker for pretty desserts. The dessert display at Rise Restaurant is definitely worthy of being part of an Afternoon Tea buffet. My idea of a good afternoon tea dessert display is that it has to be whimsical and eye-popping.

Rise Restaurant Marina Bay Sands - Decadent Chocolate Cake (1)

Decadent and regal looking 3 layer chocolate cake

I am not one to eat desserts before mains, but when it comes to posting pictures, who’s to say we can’t post pictures of cakes and sweet treats first?

Chock Full of Beans Revisited

It’s been a while since I had brunch with my parents. Several weekends were burned just preparing for the photo-shoot and trip to New Zealand. And then of course I was away for the trip itself, so that was another 2 weekends.

My parents don’t quite fancy Western food, but brunch is something they don’t mind. My father will order Eggs Benedict 99% of the time while my mother’s eyes will hover all over the menu trying to find a healthy dish even though she secretly wants some meat. My mother is the healthiest in my family and eschews fatty food and meat if she can. But I mean what’s the fun in going for brunch if she’s going to order Eggs Benedict too? The eggs are poached, so she has deemed it healthy enough. The following is a typical scenario.

Daughter : Order this big breakfast

Mother : But it has fried sausages in it.

Daughter : Just order it. Or you want the Bircher Muesli instead?

Mother : Okay are you really sure I should order the big breakfast?

Daugher : Yes.

And later the plate will be clean. You see, it’s fine if I’m the bad guy.

I might have mentioned before that I really don’t like going back to the same place twice when there are so many new eateries to explore. This rule goes out the window when it comes to where to eat in the East. Is it just me or do Easties think that there is a severe shortage of cool cafes in the East of Singapore? I cracked my brain real hard and I only managed to summon up Chock Full of Beans, a small little cafe in Changi Village. My parents were game for it as we had a good dinner there the last time. I caved in for a lack of better suggestions, and also because it was brunch we were going to try out this time round.

Chock Full of Beans - Scrambled Eggs with mushrooms, swiss cheese and smoked salmon

Scrambled Eggs with 3 Fillings (I chose smoked salmon, mushrooms and Swiss Cheese) $12

The menu actually lists Omelette with 3 fillings, but I asked to have scrambled eggs instead, which Chock Full of Beans kindly obliged.

Chock Full of Beans - Grilled Tomatoes

Oh before I describe the eggs, let me first give a shout out to these lovely grilled tomatoes. They were just beautiful. Grilled perfectly such that they retained their juiciness, I love how the sweet taste of the tomatoes went so well with the smoky flavour of the bit of cracked black pepper.

What to eat on Voyager of the Seas Cruise

Dining on a cruise ship must surely be one of the highlights of the cruise itself. It seems to be a pretty grand affair too. There are a number of dining areas to choose from, ranging from the opulent looking main dining rooms all the way to the casual Johnny Rockets Restaurants, aka Billy Bombers lookalike. Interestingly, there is no extra cost in dining in my favourite Carmen restaurant, which looks like the most atas dining room there is. Yet, there is a surcharge to dine at Johnny Rockets. I suppose when you’ve been on the ship for more than a week, you will yearn for something different.

Voyager Carmen Dining Room - (12)

This is the Carmen dining room. Does it not look super grand? It kinda took my breath away when I first stepped in! Makes you feel like you’re in a bygone era. Cruise passengers can dine here without further charge! The cheapest tickets will get you a table on the 1st floor, and you will be assigned the same table and same waiter throughout.

Rendezvous Grand Hotel Singapore Afternoon Tea

*Media Invite*

I haven’t had English Afternoon Tea for the longest time. It was a pleasant surprise when Ms Christina Tan, Marketing Manager of Rendezvous Grand Hotel Singapore after reading about my Afternoon Tea exploits, kindly kindly extended an invitation to me and to fellow blogger PXDKITTY.

Having afternoon tea always puts me in a good mood. One gets to delight in the beautiful chinaware used, the exquisite little morsels of cakes and finger sandwiches, and the girly company. For some reason, I cannot imagine 2 men having afternoon tea together.

It was particularly delightful to learn that the English Afternoon Tea at Rendezvous Grand Hotel costs only $18.90. Compared to the approx $32 Afternoon Tea at Regent Hotel or $38 at The Knolls Sentosa, the one at Hotel Rendezvous is a steal! Rendezvous Grand Hotel does not provide free flow of coffee or tea (just the 1 cup), but it’s still good value!

You may not know this but Rendezvous Grand Hotel has recently undergone a major Renovation, including a name change from the previous Hotel Rendezvous. The Palong Bar, located on the 1st floor of the hotel and where we had our Afternoon tea, looks sleek yet comfortable.

Rendezvous Hotel Palong Bar - Afternoon Tea 3-tier service (2)

Three tiers of finger sandwiches, savoury pastries and desserts!

Rendezvous Hotel Palong Bar - Various Desserts

Dessert was my favourite tier so I shall start talking about the dessert items first!

  • Paris Brest (hazelnut cream)
  • Macaroon (chocolate, orange or lemon)
  • Cheese cake
  • Tiramisu
  • Raspberry mousse

Those chocolate and lemon macaroons were fantastic. I wish there were more of them. The sweet filling sandwiched by 2 crisp layers of wafers, they were almost melt in the mouth. They are smaller than usual so I crunched them up whole. Delicious!

Rendezvous Hotel Palong Bar - Tiramisu

The other notable items were the raspberry mousse cake, the chocolate cake and the tiramisu. I like my tiramisus to be as moist as possible with more cake rather than mousse. I don’t mind if it’s swimming in the liquor actually! The tiramisu at Hotel Rendezvous had just the right ratio of liquor, cake and mousse.

Rendezvous Hotel Palong Bar - Raspberry mousse

The raspberry mousse cake was light and sweet without being cloying. Once again, there was more cake than mousse, which is really how I prefer it.

Rendezvous Hotel Palong Bar - Durian Pengat

Christina is a huge fan of durian. After she got us on that topic, and we realised that Hotel Rendezvous makes its own Durian Pengat, we just had to try it even if it wasn’t included in the Afternoon Tea Set! It was smooth and tasty with just the right amount of sweetness. I wouldn’t mind a more intense durian flavour if that could be possible.

Afternoon Tea at Conrad Executive Lounge

This is the 3rd year running that we’ve stayed at the Conrad. One of the delights in staying at one of the executive rooms is that you can get access to the Executive Lounge. If you’re on business or on holiday, you probably won’t stay long at the lounge. However, if you’re living in Singapore, it makes perfect sense. The whole day, starting from breakfast time all the way till 11pm, you can get drinks and nibbles. Breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails are also provided. If you ask me, it’s the perfect getaway in Singapore. Take a book with you and just while away the time at the lounge. Every 15 minutes or so, order a new drink!

Conrad Executive Lounge (2)

Conrad Executive Lounge (3)

1st start off with a cold drink. For me, I chose the coke, but the Partner wasted no time in jumping straight for the alcohol.

Conrad Executive Lounge Hot Chocolate and Latte (2)

Next, go for a hot drink like hot chocolate or hot latte. Why not have a biscuit or 2 as well. I kinda like this picture because the cups look like they are floating in the clouds…

Conrad Executive Lounge Iced Chocolate and Beer

Don’t just stop at 2 drinks. While you are on a roll, order a 3rd one. Yes I really like the chocolate drinks at Conrad, hot or cold!

Conrad Executive Lounge - A wine for you Madam

Heck, why not just swipe the entire bottle. Within easy reach too!

Conrad Executive Lounge (13)

If you still have space, you can head for the afternoon tea spread….

Conrad Executive Lounge Diced Lobsters

Diced lobsters in some Asian tasting marinade. Delicious! I think I had about 5 of those…

Conrad Executive Lounge Chips and Cheese Dip Conrad Executive Lounge Chips and Cheese Dip (2)

No I don’t always go for the expensive stuff. I love these chips! I ate a whole bowl of chips plus a generous serving of the cheese sauce!

Conrad Executive Lounge Chocolates Galore

Nicely displayed chocolates, they always make me smile.

Conrad Executive Lounge (12) Conrad Executive Lounge Fruit Shortcake Overhead the staff gushing at how pretty this shortcake was, which I have to agree with.
