Kraft Kitchen – New Halal Eatery in Tampines!

Checked out a Halal neighbourhood restaurant today in Tampines. It’s called Kraft Kitchen and it recently opened. I was hoping for neighbourhood friendly prices ie, preferably less than $10 or around $10 for a main course. Unfortunately most main courses were $15 and above but I did manage to settle for the Beef Rendang Pot Pie which costs $13 and sounded really promising.

The Beef Rendang Pot Pie looked really appetising when it arrived, with its shiny cap of puff pastry. Cut through that to reveal chunks and chunks of beef in a soupy stew. The beef was pretty tender and I managed to finish all the pieces. I’m not really sure if the taste of the dish reminds me of rendang, Also it was a little too soupy. Perhaps "rendang-inspired" might be a better name. It was not bad as a beef pot pie, but I wanted the rendang spice kick!

HJH Maimunah Restaurant opens new mini outlet at Tampines Mall Food Court

The famous HJH Maimunah has opened a halal food court stall at Tampines Mall. It’s called HJH Maimunah Mini, but it’s anything but mini if you compare to the neigbouring stalls. In fact, it takes up two stalls side by side, one selling Nasi padang cooked dishes, the other selling things like Tauhu Goreng and snacks. Opened just last week, it is already seeing long queues.

HJH Maimunah Mini Tampines Mall (4)

Just in case you didn’t already know, HJH Maimunah was started in 1992 by Madam Mahiran Abdul Rahman with recipes from her late mother. The first and flagship 2 storey restaurant is at 11 Jalan Pisang, but they have since expanded to another outlet at Joo Chiat and since last week, the food court outlet at Tampines Mall. They also have a large catering arm.

In 2019, HJH Maimunah received the Michelin Bib Gourmand award.

At the Kampung Glam area, the two famous Nasi Padang outlets are Minang and HJH Maimunah. I’ve visited Minang at least 10 times throughout the years and loved the food there for its robust and flavoursome taste. I’ve only been to HJH Maimunah once, around 5 years ago, but felt that the food was just average and hence was not compelled to return again.

Ssikkek / Ssik Sin Korean Grill BBQ at Tampines One

Since I am in the Korean BBQ mood, I decided to post this review of Ssikkek Koeran Grill BBQ located at Tampines One. I shall confess that prior to this visit, I had no inclination to visit any Korean BBQ restaurants because my impression of them thus far was that they were waaaaay too expensive as compared to other restaurants. I often felt that a few slivers of meat could cost tens of dollars at Korean BBQ restaurants, and why would I want to pay that when I can get a good whole steak for the same price at Western restaurants?

That was until I visited Ssikkek Korean Grill BBQ at Tampines One. I tell you, the pricing is crazy! CRAZY LOW that is! It costs only $14.90++ for lunch and $24.90++ for dinner for unlimited servings of Korean BBQ items!! The pricing reminds me of Seoul Garden, but I think this is way better, especially in terms of service rendered. The truth be told, I was a little apprehensive about the quality of the food, given the spartan looks of the restaurant and the affordable pricing, especially when most other Korean BBQ restaurants are way more expensive. But luckily as they say, the proof of the pudding is in the eating.

Look at my BFF looking so excited about barbecuing so many pieces of meat. Think guys would love Ssikkek Korean Grill because they can just feast, feast and feast on the unlimited amounts of meat!

You get about 10 different types and cuts of meats to choose from. There’s stuff like pork bacon, marinated beef short ribs, pork belly, marinated chicken etc. If you go during lunch hour, there will be less selection of meats.
