Myo Restobar : Kia Hiang’s 2nd outlet goes contemporary

Fans of Kia Hiang and its famous Claypot Chicken will be glad to know that a second outlet has now opened in the form of Myo Restobar. As the name suggests, Myo is a contemporary looking restaurant, located on the 19th floor of Oxley Tower at 138 Robinson Road. With its industrial decor complete with concrete floors, exposed light bulbs and even a feature wall with actual moving metal gears, you will be forgiven for thinking that this is a new player in the market.

The decor may be done up to cater to younger audiences and the office crowd, but Kia Hiang’s traditional Cantonese favourites will still be available. Most famous would be the Kia Hiang Claypot Spring Chicken. The recipe used at Myo is exactly the same. What is new is that you can also opt for Organic Chicken instead of just the Spring Chicken, for $10 more.

In case you are wondering, there have been other Kia Hiang branches opened over the years, but these have since closed down. What remains is the original flagship at International Plaza, plus the newly opened Myo Restobar. And the name Myo, it is actually “miào” in Chinese.

I was there to check out Myo Restobar a couple of days back. For a restaurant that only opened on 11 December 2017, and for one that isn’t on the ground floor, there was a good buzz going on in the restaurant. A few of the diners were already repeat customers. The menu seems relatively affordable, compared to other Chinese restaurants in the CBD area, although perhaps the dishes are slightly on the small side. But the food in general is very good, and that’s what counts right? Lunch sets are available from $16 onwards.

Scroll down to see the dishes I sampled and liked.

Kia Hiang Claypot Organic Chicken $28

This is definitely a must order whether you are at Kia Hiang or at Myo. It is this signature dish that has kept customers returning time and again for 40 years. The organic version costs $28 but the non-organic version costs only $18. $18 for 1 pot of fork tender spring chicken enveloped in soft cabbage and braised in syrupy secret herbal broth, it is really as delicious as it sounds and it doesn’t have a strong herbal taste. I am told the cabbage has to be braised at a very low temperature for a very long time in order to render it this tender. In fact, you don’t even need to order anything else. Just one claypot of this, plus lots of rice. Comfort food at its best.

Man-Cakes?! You have to visit LeVeL33 Craft Brewery and Restaurant to try them!

I am so smitten by these Man-Cakes that I had to just mention them upfront. Now is this creative or what? Mini pancakes served in beer mugs, with generous dollops of clotted cream. And did I mention bacon, because bacon just makes things taste better. You will laugh when ordering it, and it will be fun to eat too.

Bacon Man-Cakes (Banana, Maple, Clotted Cream) $15

And I think the Man-Cakes epitomises the philosophy of LeVel33, which is to establish itself as a relaxing and fun place to dine at, especially on the weekends. There are so many items on the menu I want to try just because they sound so interesting! Btw, the person holding the beer mugs is Executive Chef Jimi Tegerdine himself. Chef Jimi has been working in the culinary world since 2001, and has had experience in numerous locations such as The Relais de Coche in South of France, Wagamama and Cho Gao in Australia. At Cho Gao, his role was to give a fresh interpretation of traditional Asian dishes from Thailand, Vietnam, India, China, Indonesia and Japan. And you will see these Asian influences again in the dishes that are served at LeVel33.

Monti Sunday Brunch – Unlimited brunch ala-carte style, eat until you drop!

Catalunya at Fullerton Pavilion which opened to much fanfare a couple of years back has closed, and in its place is now Monti by the 1-Group, which also houses other lifestyle brands such as 1-Altitude, 1-Rochester, UNA, 1-University, The Garage, The Summerhouse and 1-Host. Catalunya was sensational, not just because of the amazing food, but also because of the exuberant atmosphere. I was quite sad to hear that it had closed actually! You have to read my review of Catalunya here as well as watch the video where they deliberately smash plates onto the floor! So I was curious to know if Monti would live up to the high standards that Catalunya had set.

Monti Sunday Brunch (6)

I had the opportunity to check out Monti’s Sunday Brunch which is an Italian-style ala-carte buffet featuring the 1st ever Amp your Mojito and make your own Bloody Mary drinks booth.

Monti Sunday Brunch - Frutti di Mare (1)

When you first arrive, a humongous seafood platter will greet you, comprising all the goodies of the sea, aka Alaskan king crab, tiger prawns, tuna tataki, salmon sashimi, fine de Claire oyster, mussels and clams. The menu says that the seafood platter is limited to 1 per table, however you can still order more oysters, tuna tataki, tiger prawns and salmon, so really the only big ticket item that you can’t have refills is the Alaskan king crab.

PARKROYAL on Pickering Lime Restaurant Afternoon Tea (9)

I had the opportunity to check out the afternoon tea and I must say this tea set is good for those who want a place to relax for a few hours, with some nibbles and unlimited servings of coffee and tea. If I were working in the CBD and needed a place to carry out business meetings, this might be the perfect solution too. I really love the bright and spacious feel of Lime Restaurant, thanks to the high ceiling and floor to ceiling glass walls. The water features lining the periphery of the restaurant help to exude the “oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle” feeling.

Nowadays Baby gets to partake in the afternoon tea experience too, just don’t tell him that he got the short end of the carrot stick….

Izy Dining and Bar–The most eye-catching Japanese roll you will find!

At first glance, Izy Dining and Bar might strike you more as a drinking joint than a restaurant that serves proper Japanese food. But do not be thwarted by the long bar counter that takes up practically the entire front section of the restaurant, there’s good food to be had if you venture forth. Food that will not only please the taste-buds but also the eyes. And if you venture further in literally, you will reach the table seating area, which in my opinion is more comfortable for consuming lunch and dinner.

On the menu are the usual suspects for any Japanese restaurant such as sashimi, sushi, rolls and cooked dishes. However it’s the little touches here and there, and the creative use of ingredients that really set Izy Dining apart from the usual Japanese restaurants you find in malls. Everything just looks so delicious!

The piece de la resistance for Izy Dining and Bar has go to be this.

Izy Dining & Bar - Japanese Nokke Roll (Uni, Ikura, Crab, Negitoro, Veg) $45 (2)Japanese Nokke Roll (Uni, Ikura, Crab, Negitoro, Veg) $45

If this doesn’t catch your eye, I don’t know what will. Basically all the Japanese dream ingredients presented on one dish. It will disappear into the stomach all too quickly, so my only advice is to savour it slowly! It’s a must order if you love all these ingredients!
