As promised, here is part 2 of the Au Chocolat write-up. I visited Au Chocolat a total of THREE times in the span of 1 week, BEAT THAT!!!
The first time I was there, I was there with my BFF2012 to recce if Au Chocolat would be a nice location for my pre-wedding shoot. It was a pretty easy and unanimous decision that the whimsical and quaint look of Au Chocolat would be just perfect for chocolate loving me. A food blogger having her pre-wedding photos taken in a restaurant, not a bad idea right? We were there at 4pm to recce the place, and after perusing the menu, I was so famished that I ordered dinner! Ok fine, I had a very light lunch, and I had a Spa session which would end only after 8, so it was a good time for dinner.
The 2nd time I was at Au Chocolat was with The Partner and a whole contingent of photographers and makeup artist! The staff at Au Chocolat were so sweet (a pun?) they just made our day by being so helpful throughout our shoot. I’m glad I didn’t scare off any customers. They looked more amused and curious than annoyed. And in fact, the number of passers-by that did a double take, some even retreating their steps to get a better look at us, it made me feel like a model, aww!! It must be the wedding dresses I wore, plus the entourage!
The 3rd time at Au Chocolat was with The Partner again, after a quick visit to the Harry Potter Exhibition. This time I got to eat a proper dinner, although I had to rush off for the F1 after that. While eating, lo and behold, another friend walked into the restaurant! The same friend who I mentioned Au Chocolat to, and couldn’t wait to come and try it out too!
Au Chocolat is definitely a must visit when you are at Marina Bay Sands. Even if you don’t dine there, it’s worth taking a look. The sweet shop is enough to make you wanna open up your purse or wallet. Hey, that’s what happened to my make-up artist, who ended up buying some cute sweets for her son!
Croque Monsieur $16 – Sliced ham & aged gruyere cheese between 2 slices of crusty bread, coated with creamy bechamel grilled
Before I begin on sandwich, I have to tell you that Au Chocolat’s fries are fantastic! Really crispy on the outside, and having fluffy insides. It was a pleasure to eat every single one of them. And they arrived piping hot and crisp on all the occasions that I ordered them.
The Croque Monsieur was pretty tasty. The bread wasn’t crusty, and was in fact rather soft. But apart from that, I liked the creamy bechamel sauce and the gruyere cheese. I should have ordered the Croque Madame, which is exactly the same thing except it comes with a sunny-side-up for $2 extra. It would have perked up the dish, but it was a conscious decision on my part not to order the egg as I’d already had egg earlier that day.
A warning though, to those who are not familiar with the Croque Monsieur. You may find it lacking in meat or fillings, but this is just how the way a Croque Monsieur is done. The highlight is in the cheese and the sauce, and of course the bread.
The side salad was very nice too. Fresh rocket leaves, with generous amounts of walnuts, cranberries and sweet tomatoes! Love the balsamic vinegar dressing! Eating the salad made me feel slightly less guilty about eating the fries.
Vanilla Milk Shake $10
My dining companion ordered this drink and allowed me to sample it first. I was extremely amazed that it tasted so good. See I normally shun away from milkshakes, that’s just not my thing, but this was really very delicious. Drinking liquid vanilla ice cream, would be how I would describe it! The dining companion actually didn’t fancy it as much as I did. In any case, I liked it enough to order it as a “prop” for my pre-wedding bridal photo-shoot! The vanilla taste was a bit too strong on the 2nd occasion, but still very delicious. Unfortunately, The Partner too didn’t like it. Wonder if it’s a girl’s drink, heh.
Battered Fish & Spiced Chips $22 – Lightly Battered white fish fillets with crispy chips, tossed with parmesan & herbs, served with signature green tartar sauce
Love that they serve the fish and chips in this fake newspaper! The Partner and I were like “waahhh” when the fish & chips arrived. Generous pieces of fish were piled on top of the Au Chocolat signature fries. The fish was piping hot, as were the fries. The flesh portion was thick enough to be able to enjoy in huge mouthfuls. Flaky, moist and flavourful. One of the best fish and chips I have eaten this year definitely. I would not hesitate to order this again.
Au Chocolat Club Sandwich $20 – Traditional double decker stuffed with bacon, sunny side up egg, grilled chicken fillet & sauteed mushrooms, finished with Swiss cheese & guacamole salad
This was what I ordered, and compared to the Fish & Chips, this was rather average. The portion was very generous, but the ingredients within the burger were nothing spectacular. Not bad, but not spectacular.
I actually sampled 2 cheesecakes during the photo-shoot. Unfortunately I don’t have pictures of them as you can well guess that I was concentrating on having my pictures taken instead, for once!
