YOG Gymnastics Finals!

BEEP BEEP BEEP!!! Important Announcement

This is 365days2play reporting. Once the YOG is over, this channel will resume normal Food Blog transmission….

I was really really really lucky to be able to receive a pair of complementary tickets to the YOG Gymnastics Finals on Sunday 22 August 2010. A friend wanted to bribe me with dinner in exchange for one of the tickets, but my mother had already staked her claim on it. Come to think of it, I wouldn’t have sold the tickets even if I was offered $1000! (Ok maybe I would do that and then buy another ticket back for $200? Ha…)

We arrived earlier this time round to get good seats. They were giving out the YOG noise makers at the door. (Finally, my very own YOG noise maker! I can be at peace now.) The atmosphere was even better than the qualifying rounds. The hosts were busy getting the crowd into the mood, not that the spectators needed much help. Even before the gymnasts were out, there were already wolf whistles, screams, cheers and lots of noise making. I swear it was akin to attending a pop concert!

A colleague asked me, what’s so interesting about watching kids compete in sports? Well the thing is I don’t view them as merely kids. To me, this feels like the real Olympics. I’m witnessing real athletes perform with strength, grace, determination and skill. These athletes just happen to be young!

Anyway, here are some highlights from the Artistics Gymnastics Individual Apparatus Finals.

YOG Women’s Gymnastics Qualifying Rounds

Here are some of the photos I took during today’s YOG Women’s Gymnastics Qualifying Rounds Subdivision 1. It was amazing to be there witnessing my favourite sport live for the 1st time. Even my mother enjoyed every moment of it! It was definitely a $10 x 2 well spent!

Security was tight. We had to walk through the security scanners even before we got into Bishan Sports Hall. The area was quite packed because the athletics competitions were going on next door at Bishan Stadium.

YOG Gym WQ1 - SpectatorsNow tell me, is that crowded or what? The tickets for even the qualifying rounds were sold out. Even the ticket office located on site, which may have some last minute unsold tickets, was sold out. I know because a lady standing near the entrance kept asking people if they had spare tickets for her daughter, and she said so. I think YOG should have sold more tickets because they definitely could have crammed more people in!

YOG Gym WQ1 - Students CheeringWhen I first thought I wouldn’t be able to get tickets for the finals, I was a bit miffed to think that the tickets might have been reserved for students “forced” to attend the games to make up the numbers. As you can see from the picture, the students certainly don’t look forced. The little boy from Corporation Primary School was having a whale of a time. I am rather surprised that a school would send a contingent of primary school boys to watch the girls gymnastics, but I see it wasn’t a wrong decision! And whenever the a gymnast accomplished a particularly difficult move, there were appreciative “ahhs” and claps.

You know, I’ve always wondered how on earth the gymnasts manage to somersault that high. I mean I can’t even JUMP that high, let alone somersault! I know that the Floor is spring-loaded, but still, that’s hardly enough time to even clap twice!

Singapore Youth Olympics Games – Here I come (to watch)!

I’m brimming with energy even though it is nearly 1 am! I really must be a night person! It’s also thanks to the fact that I will not be going into the office tomorrow because I’ve taken leave to watch the Youth Olympic Games Women’s Gymnastics Preliminaries! I can’t wait to see what it is like. Despite being a loyal TV spectator of this sport for more than 20 years, I have never witnessed a live Gymnastics competition up close and personal before! This will be my 1st time and it’s none too soon!

I’ve also got myself tickets to watch the canoing/kayaking race at the Marina Reservoir on Saturday morning. It’s not that I am a super fan of canoing/kayaking. I just feel like this Youth Olympics is such a rare event that I surely have to do more than watch just 1 sport? Also, the view of the Marina Reservoir, with the Singapore Flyer in the background, must be a pretty sight to behold. I specially picked the morning race so that the photos will turn out great in the morning sunlight. I can’t wait!

How are you enjoying the inaugural Youth Olympic Games?

Here are 2 photos for you to enjoy, taken from the YOG Opening Ceremony preview I attended.
