Ethan’s Gourmet Foods–Get your Kobe beef fix here!

The Partner likes to cook, so I am always on the look out for supermarket deals and other good places to shop for our groceries. One of our weaknesses is the meat counter, where we can spend a good 5 to 10 minutes scrutinising the various cuts of meats on sale. Btw, not all cuts of meat are displayed. Those in the know will often ask for the more specialised cuts such as skirt steak, hangar steak etc. And it’s a real pity we can’t get beef tongue easily in Singapore.

So it was with a bit of excitement that we drove halfway across Singapore to check out the newly opened Ethan’s Gourmet Foods. The 2,271 sqft grocer boasts premium and exclusive gourmet products air-flown straight from source every other week. One of the 3 founding partners is also a native Japanese who has an extensive network amongst food producers in Japan, hence slant towards Japanese products.

Premium products that retail at Ethan’s Gourmet Foods include Tajima wagyu or Kobe beef, Hokkaido snow crab and scallops, amadai aka tile fish, Australian pasture-fed lamb. Day 3 – We were generously invited to dinner during our stay at Château de l’Ile & Spa in the Strasbourg/Ostwald region. Château de l’Ile has 2 restaurants. The Restaurant "Winstub de l’Ile " has all the charm of an Alsace brasserie with its typical welcoming decor: traditional benches, solid rustic chairs, decorated ceiling, and tinted windows. You can enjoy regional dishes at this restaurant.

The other restaurant, which we eventually chose as our dining venue for the evening was Restaurant "Gourmet de l’Ile". It is decked out to look like a 19th century bourgeoisie house and serves fine dining French cuisine.

We perused the menu and concluded that the Tasting menu at 74 Euros was the most value for money, yes even though 74 Euros doesn’t sound cheap on its own. The starters were already above 20 euros while the main courses were above 30 euros, so it made very good sense to get the Tasting menu, even if we had to take 3 hours to finish the meal!

As with all fine dining, you always get more than what you’ve ordered! There will be “surprises”, more “surprises”, “mouth washers” literally, and chocolates after desserts! Don’t be planning to go home early when you dine at a fine dining restaurant! This here was the appetiser of lentil puree soup with a stick of bacon in it. It was an amazing starter as the graininess of the lentils and smokiness of the bacon really gelled together very well, kick starting the whole meal.

Brasserie Les Saveurs Christmas Dinner

It’s less than 20 days to Christmas! Have you made plans for Christmas yet? Be it a sit-down home-cooked meal, a party at a friend’s place, or dinner at a fancy restaurant, DO SOMETHING and let your hair down! It’s the festive season and it would be a pity to spend it like any other day. Make the holidays count! It’s no secret that I love Christmas time. I love all the pretty lights and I love the idea of giving and receiving presents. That’s the very reason why I chose to get married in December (although I am beginning to realise that it ain’t that great an idea….no time to enjoy the festivities!)

It is the most romantic, pretty and posh restaurant I have dined at, really it is the whole package! Of course it doesn’t come cheap, but it’s a once a year thing, I say go for it!

Lucky me, this Christmas tasting is my 2nd visit to Brasserie Les Saveurs! The first time, I enjoyed a lovely 3 course dinner during Restaurant Week with my BFF. It was an amazing experience and I’m glad to report back that the feeling hasn’t changed even after my 2nd visit. You know you’re in for a treat when the dinner starts with a lovely mini baguette with decadent French butter. Beurre is French for butter and only butter from Isigny can be labelled to be from Isigny, just like Champagne!

Miyako Japanese Restaurant Bintan

I recently went on a quick trip to Bintan Lagoon Resorts. It was so quick, I left on a Friday afternoon and returned back to Singapore on a Saturday evening! I don’t think anyone missed me, but I sure accomplished a lot while I was there. I will write more about it in the next post, complete with pictures. I took over 300 photos so be prepared for a deluge of pictures. While I sort the rest of the photos out, let me first stuff you with pictures of my lovely lunch at Miyako Japanese Restaurant in Bintan Lagoon Resorts.

Miyako Japanese Restaurant is next to the main hall, just on the left of Kopi-O Restaurant which is where most people will have their buffet breakfast. It’s a bright and cheery place as it’s nearly all glass walls. There’s a huge Teppanyaki station in the middle of the whole restaurant, with tables lined all around it.

I’ll be upfront with you. The food here isn’t cheap, but it is really very fresh tasting and of good quality. Well food in Bintan Lagoon Resort is a little pricey, it’s a holiday resort after all, but I think the Japanese restaurant takes the cake. Therefore, if you’re in for a good pampering, Miyako’s the place you want to go or take your business clients.

Eating this was fantastic as the delightful slightly salty liquid from the little voluptuous balls of salmon roe burst in my mouth.

One of the best Gindara I have ever tasted. You can see from the picture that the cod was extremely flaky and practically slid down my throat without much effort. The flesh was moist and creamy flavoured. I could have just eaten this cod whole, together with a bowl of steaming rice! That would really make me a very happy person.

This was the killer dish, in terms of pricing. What you see here is half a portion because my mother took the other half. You have to order the whole 200gms though, but I wouldn’t advise it if you are dining alone. The meat is rather rich, although not extremely so. I believe it’s just a medium level Wagyu beef, forgot to ask the grading. Taste wise, I would actually prefer wagyu beef with more marbling. But if I didn’t know it was Wagyu beef, I would say that it was good beef teppanyaki.

I do think that this is one dish I wouldn’t recommend ordering. It tastes nice, but $135, it just seems a little too much, especially when you consider places like Morton’s charge only $100 for a slab of beef, albeit not Wagyu grade.

Itacho Sushi Restaurant

Had a nice lunch at Itacho Sushi Restaurant a few days ago with an ex-colleague. It was only my second visit to Itacho. I know that a number of people swear by Itacho, but my first visit to Itacho roughly a year ago was nothing memorable. Apart from the quality of the food, one of the reasons why people like going to Itacho is because of the seemingly cheaper price. That’s true, some items really are ridiculously cheap. But you couldn’t make a meal out of those items because the restaurant limits you to like 2 pieces per person. So invariably, one has to order some stuff from the main menu eventually, and the prices add up.

Having said that, eating at Itacho isn’t expensive (even if it is not super cheap), they have a huge range of sushi and quite a number of sushi items in the menu aren’t available in other restaurants like Sushi Tei, so it makes for an interesting experience.

The croquette ball was extremely delicious. It was piping hot when it arrived, and had such a crisp exterior, while delivering a luxuriously creamy filling when bitten into. On hindsight, I don’t think the smoked duck flavour was very strong, which is a little disappointing considering the price and the size.
