1872 Clipper Tea infused mooncakes

Two weeks ago, I was invited to partake in a tea infused moon cake making class. I was in two minds whether to attend because although I love baking, it has never occurred to me to try making moon cakes. I was kind of intrigued by the fact that the moon cakes would be infused with tea as well. Tea and cake, just the very idea puts me in a relaxed mood. And hey, I could have a fine time sipping tea from one of my favourite brands while the Partner does the baking instead.

TWG Tea Salon at Marina Bay Sands

When TWG first opened in Singapore several years back, everyone was keen to go check out this gilded and Parisien looking tea salon. It was quite unlike all the other tea houses we have ever seen, not that there are many to begin with in Singapore! I for one was attracted by the tai tai look. But because prices were so steep, I just couldn’t bring myself to dine at TWG more than once. $45 for a tea set where you get less food than at a posh hotel, I would frankly rather have my tea at the hotel! IF, however you just purchase the loose leaf teas without any fancy packaging, ie basically the tea leaves are just packaged in a paper bag, that in itself is quite affordable.

Recently, I went to check out TWG’s menu again and it seems that there are new additions to the menu. They still have the $40 plus dollars sets, which I find are not value for money. However, if you order the main courses or brunch dishes, those are pretty okay. For example:

  • Pan-seared sea bass $26

  • Wagyu Steak $35
  • Grilled Chicken $26
  • Wagyu Burger $24
  • 3 mini-burgers $24

The Eggs Benedict was what I ordered, under the all day dining menu. These days my mind goes weak when I see eggs benedict on the menu, but not so long ago, it would have been the English Breakfast that I would have ordered as I wanted a bit of everything! The good thing about eggs benedicts are that they are not fried. I hope you like this egg porn picture because there are few food items that turn me on as much as a flowy yolky egg!

Afternoon tea at Halia, Raffles Hotel

I’m always on the look out for nice places to have afternoon tea. You know, I think that Singapore really could do with more afternoon tea places. I know we have lots of interesting new cafes, especially in recent times where we are literally seeing a new cafe pop up each month. But I’m talking about decadent afternoon tea places, places from yesteryear, that make you dream of faraway lands. For just those few blissful hours, each sip of tea and each morsel of macaron transports you to a place lost in time, where stress and tiresome duties do not exist.

And so I was glad to make acquaintance with the new Halia at Raffles Hotel. Halia takes over the spot which was once occupied by Seah Street Deli. Afternoon Tea Service is available here daily from 3pm to 5pm. For $35++, a two-tier tea stand with a scrumptious selection of sweet and savoury nibbles will be served to you.

The long and short of it all, is that all of the items were pretty delicious. I’ve come across several other afternoon teas where some items are really mindblowing, while other items are not worth your calorie intake. At Halia’s afternoon tea, there aren’t any items that are overly rich or cloying.

Which do you normally start with, the desserts, or the savouries? For me, I’ll definitely start with the savouries, but I think the desserts tend to make a more droolsome photo. Museo High Tea Buffet

Hope you enjoyed my first post on Museo Restaurant, focussed on the decadent desserts. This post is dedicated to the savouries! This isn’t a very big restaurant, and you shouldn’t expect a buffet line the size of those in Singapore’s Hotel restaurants. What I can say is, most of the dishes served at Museo were really good.

Which is why I had to split my posts into 2, all the food looked so good! When you go to Museo, you’re paying for the lovely ambience and the great views as well. Oh, did I mention that Museo serves unlimited servings of signature teas? You can have as many changes of teas as you want. Most hotel afternoon tea buffets limit you to 2 changes of teas.

Tiong Bahru Bakery

Is now also open at Raffles City Shopping Mall. No need to brave the long queues in Tiong Bahru or a long walk from the Tiong Bahru MRT station. Now you can sample Tiong Bahru Bakery products in the air-conditioned comfort of the basement of Raffles City.

Actually, this visit to the Raffles City outlet was my 1st visit ever to Tiong Bahru Bakery. I was quite surprised to find the sit-down area practically empty when I was there around 7-9pm on a Sunday. A number of people were doing takeaways though. I’d heard mixed reviews about the place but most people seem to at least agree that their croissants are damn good. Read on and you’ll be able to find out if I agree. Meanwhile, check out the photos of the place. It’s sprawling! It’s in the basement, opposite Din Tai Fung, at the site that used to be Aerins.

BTW, did you know that Tiong Bahru Bakery is owned by Spa Esprit? They are the people behind House @ Dempsey and they also own/co-own many dining establishments like 40Hands, Open Door Policy and Skinny Pizza.
