Tiong Bahru Bakery

Is now also open at Raffles City Shopping Mall. No need to brave the long queues in Tiong Bahru or a long walk from the Tiong Bahru MRT station. Now you can sample Tiong Bahru Bakery products in the air-conditioned comfort of the basement of Raffles City.

Actually, this visit to the Raffles City outlet was my 1st visit ever to Tiong Bahru Bakery. I was quite surprised to find the sit-down area practically empty when I was there around 7-9pm on a Sunday. A number of people were doing takeaways though. I’d heard mixed reviews about the place but most people seem to at least agree that their croissants are damn good. Read on and you’ll be able to find out if I agree. Meanwhile, check out the photos of the place. It’s sprawling! It’s in the basement, opposite Din Tai Fung, at the site that used to be Aerins.

BTW, did you know that Tiong Bahru Bakery is owned by Spa Esprit? They are the people behind House @ Dempsey and they also own/co-own many dining establishments like 40Hands, Open Door Policy and Skinny Pizza.

Gryphon Tea launches Grand Cru Collection

Gryphon Tea Event

Recently, I was invited to attend a private tea and water appreciation session. As this would be very different from the usual eat, eat and eat some more food tasting session, I jumped at the opportunity. I had previously attended a number of wine tasting sessions (Singapore, Australia, New Zealand) and I quite enjoyed the experience, even though I got tipsy for the one in New Zealand. Of course, there’s no chance of me getting embarrassingly tipsy for a tea tasting session. And the thing about such appreciation sessions is that you get to learn so much about the product that you’re tasting. The history, the processes, down to the very reason why you’re even tasting the product that you’re tasting.

Gryphon Tea Event - (6)

The tea master of the day, and also the founder of Gryphon Tea is Mr Lim Tian Wee. He hails from an illustrious tea export family business known as Lim Lam Thye. I like to think of him as the guy who developed a modern identity for his family tea business and imparted in it a refreshingly hip spin.

Crystal Jade Dining IN Dim Sum

When it comes to Dim Sum, the Parents have probably tried more places than I have in the last few months. They have been secretly dining out without inviting me, on the pretext that I was too busy with my own programme. What kind of an explanation is that?? My programme is always flexible when free food is involved. Yeah they knew they were on shaky ground, so a reservation was quickly made at their latest discovery, aka Crystal Jade Dining IN at Vivocity.

I was initially surprised that they would suggest Crystal Jade. Although I had a good dim sum meal at one of the casual Crystal Jade restaurants several years ago, I just didn’t associate Crystal Jade (a really affordable restaurant) with good dim sum. I forget that Crystal Jade has so many outlets ranging from cheap to premium. Crystal Jade Dining IN is of course one of their premium restaurants.

I love this Vivocity outlet. Not only do you get a view of Sentosa, the natural light coming in makes for great food photography! The staff are really attentive and will not hesitate to fill up your cup with tea the instance it is empty. We were sitting at the lower tier, nearest the glass walls, and because of the tiered seating, we didn’t realise that the restaurant was totally full during lunch, it was that cosy.

Crystal Jade Dining IN - Chinese Tea (2)

Believe we ordered Tie Guan Yin (Iron Buddha) tea, The tea is a little light because I was too hasty in pouring it out.

Crystal Jade Dining IN - Dim Sum Dishes (2)

I haven’t caught on to the Tapas fad, but small bites in the form of Dim Sum is okay for me. I wonder why.

Crystal Jade Dining IN - Pumpkin soup with Seafood $12 Pumpkin soup with Seafood $12

I thought my parents were joking when they said they were going to order pumpkin soup. I’ve never been a fan of pumpkin, and much less pumpkin soup, which I expected to be a thick puree of pumpkin. Thankfully, it wasn’t and it was a really good recommendation too. There wasn’t a strong pumpkin taste actually. It lent itself in the colour of the soup, the smooth/slightly thick texture and sweet flavour. I loved the diced vegetables and seafood in the soup. I like my soups to have something to bite into, and not just be pure liquid.

Crystal Jade Dining IN - Char Siew Bao aka Steamed B.B.Q Pork with Honey Bun $4.20 Char Siew Bao aka Steamed B.B.Q Pork with Honey Bun $4.20

I found this to be delicious at first bite, with the sweetness of the BBQ pork being just right. The pork was also firm and I did not detect fatty bits, which to me is a sign of a cheap quality bun. Towards the end, I did feel like there was a sort of off flavour in the pork, which made me wonder if the pork was not fresh.

Afternoon Tea at The Landing Point, Fullerton Bay Hotel

I don’t know about you, but I feel that once in a while you have to pamper yourself with a nice treat. We work so hard Monday to Friday 8.30 – 5.30, usually longer than that, that life would be indeed a drag if you didn’t know how to enjoy it. Be it a spa, massage, short trip overseas of indulging over food, I feel it’s a necessity not a luxury, just to keep you sane and recharge you in this hectic environment.

For me, going for afternoon tea at a nice hotel is a must. When I’m low on “lovin”, my brain craves for this. I know technically speaking, the afternoon tea items don’t feel worth the $$$ when compared to lobsters and crabs, but you’re really paying for the experience so I still think it’s worth it. Tourists to Singapore, you have to try our English Afternoon Tea experience, you won’t regret it!

Afternoon Tea at Fullerton Bay Hotel (14) For $42++, you get a 3 tier English Afternoon Tea set, which is refillable. Comes with 3 changes of tea.

Mini Macarons for the macaron lover. These were very good, just crispy on the outside and still chewy on the inside. Because the Afternoon Tea is refillable, its hard to restrain yourself to just 1 or 2 macarons!

Afternoon Tea at Fullerton Bay Hotel (16)

Salmon Tartar Filled Pistachio Cones – I think I had 3 servings of this! The salty flavours from the salmon married very well with the crisp pistachio cones. The Brie Cheese and Figs on Hazelnut Crackers in the background were also very good.

Afternoon Tea at Fullerton Bay Hotel (6)   We were there during the last week of December, hence the little star shaped cookies to make it more Christmassy.

Häagen-Dazs High Tea Affair

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out (2)

Despite the proliferation of new ice cream parlours in Singapore, I still stick loyal to my favourite ice cream company. There’s nothing quite like a Häagen-Dazs ice cream out there. If you ask me, Häagen-Dazs makes the best vanilla ice cream and Belgian chocolate ice cream. Their ice creams are rich tasting and each mouthful of the cold treat envelopes your tongue like smooth velvet and just instantly makes you forget your troubles (even if they crash back onto you when you pay the bill). I’ve never disliked any ice cream flavours I’ve tried at Häagen-Dazs.

They say commercialised ice creams have lots of additives in them, but I’ve looked at the ingredient list on their vanilla ice cream and the ingredient list is super short! I’m sure everyone has their own favourite ice cream brands, but I think most people will agree that when it comes to indulgence and having a luxurious time, nothing spells it quite like Häagen-Dazs.

As if a trip to a Häagen-Dazs store wasn’t indulgent enough, the people there had to up the ante with this new High Tea Affair promotion. The Häagen-Dazs 3-tier High Tea set is decked with 3 mini scoops each of Cookie Dough Chip, Belgian Chocolate and Strawberry ice cream; followed by a choice of 6 delicate ice cream macaroons and finally, succulent pieces of kiwis, raspberries and grapes.

Häagen-Dazs kindly invited me and 3 of my girly pals to check out their new offerings. It was truly a perfect girls day out! Good ice cream. Good friends. What more can you ask for?

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out - High Tea Affair (3) High Tea Affair $38++ Friend in the photo not included in the set!

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out - High Tea Affair (2) Closer shot of the -Dazs 3-tier High Tea. Top deck comprises of 3 mini scoops each of Cookie Dough Chip, Belgian Chocolate and Strawberry ice cream.

The mini scoops of ice cream were decadently delicious! The 4 of us were practically swooning over the set. I know it’s meant to be a “Girl’s Day Out” affair so the ice creams are mini and dainty, but when it comes to ice cream, big is good! Wow I can just imagine if Häagen-Dazs creates a “Boy’s Day Out” promotion and comes up with some gigantic ice cream, I’d be the 1st in line to try it!

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out - Macaroon Mélange (3) Ice Cream Macaroons. 8 flavours to choose from.

On the 2nd tier, you have the ice cream macaroons (or macarons if you will). These are nothing like the French macarons even though they look similar!! If I may say so, these ice cream macarons are way BETTER! Seriously! Each macaron has a thin chocolate shell, which hides creamy, luscious ice cream and Chantilly cream. The chef who created this must be a genius! Biting into each macaron, you get a mix of wonderful flavours and textures. You have the crisp and thin chocolate shell, and the delicious cold ice cream just bursts into your mouth. One word, FANTASTIC. Okay 2 more words, MUST TRY.

You don’t have to get the 3-tier High Tea in order to enjoy the macarons. You can order the Macaroon Mélange on its own for $18++ served with mango sauce and garnished with almond nibs and strawberries. The macaroons are also available as gift sets to take home and come in a variety of flavors including Caramel Biscuit & Cream, Strawberry, Chocolate and Cookies & Cream. The gift set is priced at S$25+

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out - Cookie Dough Chip Petite Temptations

That’s not all that Häagen-Dazs has come up with. You can also try the Petite Temptations – S$18++, which is not included in High Tea Affair set. This is vanilla ice cream studded with chunks of buttery cookie dough and sweet fudge chips, accompanied by drizzles of mango and chocolate sauce. I found the cookie dough ice cream to be yet another excellent ice cream flavour. I never was a fan of cookie dough, but I think I’m a convert now. Love it that I can “bite” my ice cream. The cookie at the base of the ice cream was a nice touch, although on it own their own those cookies were pretty ordinary.

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out - Macaroon Mélange (2) This was what I had from the 3 tier set. You can tell I like Chocolate eh…

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out - Earl Grey Tea

At first I ordered an Earl Grey, thinking that I might need something hot and light to help the ice creams go down.

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out - Cafe Mocha

But who was I kidding man. I didn’t need help with ice creams! After I finished my Earl Grey and was still thirsty, I ordered another Cafe Mocha. Now one place I think serves excellent Iced Cafe Mocha is The Coffee Club. It’s like the only drink I order when I go there. I think I’ve just found another Iced Cafe Mocha which I like very much. Check out the generous amount of chocolate at the bottom of the glass!

Häagen-Dazs Girls' Day Out (3) Me and my 3 other girly pals….
