Grand Salads Bistro

Just before my Norway trip, I received an invitation to check out Grand Salads Bistro. It’s not often that you find a cafe touting healthy food so I was really excited to know about the existence of this place. Grand Salads Bistro is located in the Buona Vista area. Have you heard of Fusionopolis? Well Grand Salads Bistro is located at the Solaris building, which is an extension of Fusionopolis. It’s near the one-north MRT station.

If you think that Grand Salads Bistro sounds familiar, it’s because of the Grand Salads bars located in Suntec City and AXA Tower, all owned by the petite and soft-spoken Israeli Michelle Kanner. Grand Salads Bistro offers salads and sandwiches on weekdays to the lunch time office crowd. However, on the weekends, which was when we were there, the bistro focuses on brunch/lunch items.

The brunch menu isn’t very extensive but we managed to each find something that we liked. The food is prepared by Michelle herself together with her helpers. The portions aren’t large, big eaters may need to order side dishes to share. You won’t find any deep fried food or oily food here. The dishes don’t make you feel like you’ve sinned. Instead, you get the light hearted feeling that you’ve done something good for your health for once.

I really really really love the decor of Grand Salads Bistro. It looks like some New York styled deli! The place is bright and the high ceiling gives the feeling of great spaciousness. It helps that the bistro overlooks a lot of green shrubs.

Bite selection of Mini Sandwiches, Veg & Dip, Quiche and Olives $12.90 – Love the vegetable quiche. We were thinking of whether to order a quiche on its own or via this platter here and quite regretted not getting a bigger quiche even though the accompaniments were tasty. I think most Singaporeans would not be accustomed to eating olives, prunes and chickpea puree aka hummus for breakfast, but it is a refreshing change. I love olives dearly, and I can’t understand why the Partner doesn’t, even though he loves olive oil. But whatever he doesn’t like, is a extra bonus into my mouth. Yes that little bowl there is a bowl of garlic. We polished it off wholesale.

Grand Salads Bistro - Buenos Dias

Buenos Dias (Mexican Breakfast) $12.90 – Traditional Mexican omelette with tomato, mushroom, onion, peppers and cheese, with premium veal sausage. The veal sausage we were told was organic and imported from New Zealand. You can’t find this sausage in Jason’s supermarket! Really tasty, juicy and cooked with just a tinge of char. Grand Salads Bistro should consider having a sausage dish on its own! Omelette was also nice and light tasting with all the diced veggies in it.

Michelle’s really into making her own fruit chutney. I can’t remember what they all are, I think grapefruit was one of them, and of course the garlic in the jar on the right. If you’re nice, she might just give you some to try!

Blackbird Cafe

After the slogfest in the office these past few weeks, I promised myself a good brunch to sort of celebrate (the weekend that is, not the end of the project!) as well as relax. A few days ago, I happened to chance upon AiMakan’s Facebook posting about this new cafe called Blackbird Cafe. The fact that this place is owned by a New Zealander got me sitting up. Straight away shot an email to the Partner asking him where our cafe was, as it’s kind of been a dream of mine to have my own cafe one day. Well, one day it will come true.

Anyway, so today with the parents in tow, we made it to Blackbird Cafe for brunch. Brunch is from 10am – 3pm. It was lucky we arrived early around 10.30am. We had our pick of the choicest seats. By 11am, the place was full!

Check out the full menu on this menu board, but for brunch, only brunch items are served, along with 1 sandwich and 1 mains of the day (which was a burger today). I thought the brunch menu was rather limited. Apart from the photos you see below, they only have buttermilk pancakes, bread basket, Danish basket, 5 cheese omelette and fresh fruit platter.

First up, Flat White to wake me up ($5.50). Coffee was really nice and smooth. Cookie was tasty too.

Blackbird Cafe - Big Brekkie

Big Breakie $18 – Eggs done any way you want plus sausage, bacon, hashcake, tomato, baked beans and sourdough bread. Omelette was nice and fluffy, tasted almost like scrambled eggs that happened to look like an omelette. The hash cake was really good and different from the usual hash browns. It’s compacted minced potato covered in a breadcrumb thingy. Best part was that it wasn’t oily looking or tasting. Sausage was so so, and the bacon was totally over fried, although I suppose some people like it this way.

Eggs Benny $12 – This was what I ordered. I’m afraid I didn’t really enjoy it very much. The eggs were poached in a vinaigrette water so there was an overpowering sour taste. It soaked through into the muffin bread base such that there was no way of escaping it. Quite disappointing actually when I so looked forward to the trip here. I asked the waiter about it and apparently the eggs are not poached in plain water to give a different twist to it. Didn’t work this time round I’m afraid.

Croque Monsieur $10 – Oven baked brioche with bechamel, ham and cheese plus salad greens. This here is a modified version of the Croque Monsieur as my father doesn’t eat ham. We got the chef to remove the ham and substitute it with eggs instead. My father enjoyed his meal very much but would have liked it to have more cheese. He also loved the bread and said it had a pastry like flavour.

Sandwich of the day, the HCT Sandwich $10 – Honey glazed ham, cheese, tomato with wholegrain mustard on ciabatta – My mother had this and was very pleased with the sandwich too. She loved that the ciabatta tasted fresh and had a sort of crispy texture. It’s light enough too as it isn’t laced with lots of cream. It could have done with a few more slices of cheese, just to give more punch.

Breakfast Buffet at Conrad Oscars

Breakfast was included as part of the Conrad Singapore Hotel package we booked for my birthday last month. I have a love hate relationship with breakfast buffets. In order to get a good seat and have lots of time to go for several rounds, one is required to wake up early. But that is so against my philosophy on weekends! In fact, it’s against my philosophy everyday!

The Partner is more of an early bird so he’s the one summoning the energy to drag me out of bed. Overt tactics such as “IF YOU’RE NOT GETTING OUT OF BED, I’M GOING DOWN FIRST AND ALL YOUR PHOTOS WILL BE OF UGLY LEFTOVERS” usually works well too.

I find it really strange that there’s actually ice cream for breakfast. I suppose the freezer glass display is permanently there so why not just offer the ice cream. But seriously, who eats gummies for breakfast?!?

The guy will also whip up waffles for you with toppings of your choice. I don’t have a sweet tooth  in the morning. Things like kaya toast, jam on bread and even milo will instantly cause me to be so sleepy, I rather go hungry than to risk it. Kind of like the sleepy feeling after lunch, except it happens in the morning.

Mmmmm egg. I love egggggg! Best omelette I had was still the one in MovenPick Resort Phuket. I remember it till this day even though it was 5 years ago.

Conrad Oscars also has some Asian dishes such as porridge, dim sum and Chawan Mushi. The Chawan mushi was surprisingly quite good and not overcooked, like buffet types are apt to be. The dim sum was as expected, over cooked since it was all sitting in the steamer.

Man Zhu Restaurant at Chinese Swimming Club

The Man Zhu Restaurant at the Chinese Swimming Club is now officially open! After having undergone some renovations late last year, the place now looks so much better. The place looks refreshing and cozy, unlike the big cavernous impersonal mess that it was previously. There are even booth seats all along the glass walls if you are lucky enough to snag them.

After praying at 2 temples on the 3rd day of Chinese New Year, the 3rd Uncle’s family and us had a meal together at the Man Zhu Restaurant.

Hokkien Mee $6.70 – When my hokkien mee arrived, everyone stopped eating for 2 seconds and stared at it. It was just chock full of ingredients from squid, prawns mushrooms and lots and lots of egg! Everything tasted very fresh and succulent. The broth was also quite light but would have been better if it had more kick. Something seemed to be lacking in the broth base, pork lard perhaps?

Chendol with red beans, green jelly, attap seeds, coconut milk and gula melaka – $3.10 I think I’ve never quite seen Chendol looking like this before. The coconut milk has kinda frozen on top of the pile of ice shavings. I have a really sweet tooth and often, I wish they would add more of the gula melaka but I never can bring myself to ask for more. Some how, the brain is wired to think that whatever the chef dishes out is maximum amount I can have for the day, and asking for more means going over the limit.

Daniel Boulud db Bistro Moderne Singapore

We were at Marina Bay Sands yesterday and fretting over what to have for lunch. My cousin had a birthday celebration at Ku De Ta some weeks ago, but being a scaredy cat who is afraid of heights, I didn’t want to have to scale the 65 floors without a super special occasion as reason. I’d heard about the opening of Rasapura Masters (the Foodcourt) from Tiny Island (the mall spy) so we thought we’d try it out, even if it costs $14 for a bowl of prawn noodles, or was it $17?

Enroute, we went past a nice stretch with 2 restaurants with really cool looking exteriors. One was Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza, owned by the famous Mario Batali, and the other was Daniel Boulud db bistro moderne, owned by ….Daniel Boulud. Rasapura Masters went out the window and we stood there wondering whether to go to Mozza or Daniel Boulud.

Daniel Boulud won after we looked at the brunch menu so we went in. According to the Marina Bay Sands website, originally from Lyon, France, it is in New York that Daniel Boulud’s name has become synonymous with fine dining. His Manhattan restaurant Daniel, is considered one of the ten best in the world. The interior was equally delightful. I loved the woody and heavy decor. There were booth seats, table seats and high sofa seats.

A restaurant that serves a bread basket is nice. What is even better is if the bread tastes good. DB Bistro Moderne provided us 3 lovely types of bread. My favourite was the right one. It must be the cousin of croissant because it had a really wonderful buttery taste to it. It looks like the simple baguette you can get from any neighbourhood bakery, but tastes 10 times better. Why can’t we get bread this good outside? I wanted to finish it but then i had to leave space for my main course. The middle piece of bread had a really interesting flavour. It must have been the cousin of the pretzel because I could have sworn the flavour was just like a pretzel even if the texture obviously wasn’t.

Omelette Espagnole $19 – The Partner had this dish of eggy goodness. The omelette was very light and fluffy. The ingredients are not cooked within the omelette but are instead placed on top of it. The caramelised onions were very light and sweet, and together with the salty chorizo, they brought a new dimension to the otherwise plain omelette. I really liked the breakfast potato cubes too. They were crispy on the outside while still retaining their potato flavours. A simple salad was also provided on the side. A couple of token cherry tomatoes split in half would have given some colour to the also plain heap of salad leaves

NY Yankee Burger $20 – You know I have never figured out how to properly eat a burger after al these years. The minute I slice into one, everything falls apart and I end up eating it like how you would tackle a steak on a plate. Anyway it was worth the effort since the burger was so good. At first, I thought the minced beef patty was overcooked. The outer layers were charred and pretty tough. However, after I got past the outer rim, soft moist and juicy mince awaited me. There was hardly any gristle or fat in the mince so they must have used pretty good parts of the cow. They also provided 3 different types of dips: mustard, tomato sauce and mayonnaise. I suppose this is why
DB Bistro Moderne isn’t a pure French restaurant, but a fusion one, as French chefs can be particularly brutal to diners who request for tomato sauce.

Cafe Latte – Quite good I have to say. Intense without being too bitter. And a good sized cup too. I finished most of it. Actually I don’t have high expectations for coffee at restaurants because I feel that’s not their expertise. I rather have lunch/dinner then hop over to my favourite coffee joint for coffee instead. Luckily this one was pretty good.

Conclusion: We liked the place very much, the service staff are so attentive. We are going to return again for my mother’s birthday celebrations! Besides, it is one of the rare few places in Singapore that serves Rabbit, and the Partner is hell bent on trying that!
