Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao – Refreshed menu means it’s time to visit again

When was the last time you visited Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao? If you haven’t been in recent times, now’s a great time to revisit as the Michelin one starred restaurant popular for its Northern Chinese specialities has recently refreshed its all-day dining menu.

My family and I had the pleasure of checking out their new menu recently. Here’s what we tried and our take on it.

[CNY 2014] Crystal Jade Golden Palace

*Media Invite*

I guess with the posting of this post, Christmas 2013 is well and truly over. I always have a bit of a problem “letting go” of Christmas. December is such a time of merriment and holiday feel, and the adrenelin rush of making sure all the presents are bought and Christmas plans made. And it all just seems to literally pop and disappear come December 26, but nothing spells end of Christmas as starkly as seeing all the Chinese New Year decorations come up in full force overnight. I think I would very much prefer Chinese New Year to be in February, thank you very much. But that’s not to say that I loath Chinese New Year. I love it in fact! You’ll probably find me writing a similar post about Chinese New Year come February this year!

I had an early taste of Chinese New Year via the media tasting held at Crystal Jade Golden Palace at Paragon Orchard Road, last month in fact. Even though I was in a Christmassy mood then, I must admit that the food that was served was so delicious, I almost contemplated having a Chinese meal for Christmas instead! (In the end I went for Regent Hotel’s Christmas Afternoon tea, one of the best places for afternoon tea in general)

Most people are familiar with Crystal Jade Kitchen, which is the more casual restaurant serving affordable Chinese dishes. But did you know that Crystal Jade also boasts a line of more fine-dining/premium restaurant such as the Crystal Jade Palace Restaurant at Takashimaya, Crystal Jade Premiu at One degree 15 Marina Club Sentosa Cove and Crystal Jade Dining IN at Vivocity. We had our reunion dinner sampling at the Crystal Jade Golden Palace. The restaurant looked really posh, even more so than the Vivocity and Takashimaya one I feel. If you’re looking for a fine-dining Chinese restaurant, you gotta check out Crystal Jade Golden Palace!

Host your Christmas Party with Crystal Jade!

Have you been wondering where to spend your Christmas or which restaurant to have Christmas-eve dinner? I did a quick look at the prices charged by the hotels for Christmas-eve dinner and Christmas day lunch and I nearly fell off my chair! The prices are really exorbitant! Most hotel’s Christmas buffets are $100 and upwards! Sure they throw in a lot of festive goodies, but it’s a little painful to have to part with so much cash just for a bit of Christmas cheer.

One way to not miss out on the Christmas festivities is to organise your own Christmas Party. You don’t have to do all the cooking because you can simply find a reputable caterer who will do the job for you.

Santa's Hat Starwberry Cupcake

Or you could consider ordering from Crystal Jade’s Christmas Takeaway menu! I would never have thought of approaching a Chinese restaurant for Christmas goodies, but I’ve looked at their menu and it does look really good! Check out the 2 affordable deals below. I mean for $330, which probably feeds 3 at a restaurant, you can have your own party for 10 pax! This is in fact the 7th year running that Crystal Jade has had a festive Christmas menu and the food is prepared on the same day of collection so that you don’t have to reheat before serving.

What to eat at the newly renovated Suntec City?

I had a quick walk around Suntec City after dinner at BreadSociety. Have you been to the basement of Suntec City? It’s totally revamped!!! I must say it looks pretty cool now, and the space is better utilised. The mega Fountain of Wealth is still there but the main difference now is that there are cafes and eateries lining around the Fountain of Wealth, in addition to the original circle of restaurants! So double the number now, with many cafes to choose from! Don’t worry, you won’t get wet from the fountain because the original glass walls are still there.

Most of the cafes and restaurants will be familiar to you (which is a little disappointing because I would have liked to see more new names). The familiar favourites and previous restaurants that are still there include Paradise Inn, Crystal Jade, Ichiban Boshi and Muthu Curry.  Food Republic is now the new food court and sports a very open concept as compared to the previous food court which I thought was a very linear and enclosed thing. Cafes wise you have CoffeeBean Beanstro, Gelare, etc. Pack’d from the Les Amis group is new, and so is BreadTalk Cafe and All Things N’Ice, both by BreadTalk. Together with Food Republic that is also owned by BreadTalk, BreadSociety and ToastBox, it looks like the BreadTalk Group has practically taken up half of the F&B space at Suntec! With their recent grand opening of the BreadTalk Headquarters, they really are going places!

Anyway, enough of talking, and just enjoy the pictures.Oh did I mention that Carrefour is no longer, and Giant is now the supermarket of choice?

Tunglok Signatures Dim Sum

Happy National Day everyone!

Visited Tunglok during the Fathers’ Day weekend as my parents love having dim sum for lunch. I wonder if Dim Sum is considered to be unhealthy? Certainly if you order the fried items, those are unhealthy, but what about the steamed items? The issue is that Dim Sum is such a prawn/seafood based food, and seafood doesn’t exactly score too well in the cholesterol department. But somehow, my health conscious parents have overlooked this fact and I’m quite sure if they could, they would have dim sum every week!

We visited the Tunglok Signatures at VivoCity. We previously had a really wonderful dim sum lunch at Crystal Jade Dining IN also at VivoCity so it was only natural that we would compare the experience of Crystal Jade Dining IN with Tunglok Signatures.

I have to say, Tunglok Signatures was a bit of a let-down when compared to Crystal Jade.

  • In terms of staff service, Crystal Jade was far better. The staff at Tunglok seemed frazzled and not really interested in our presence.
  • In terms of ambience and decor, once again Crystal Jade was far better. Perhaps it was because we were seated across the clearing station and could see the mess that was stacked up. Or perhaps I just don’t like stark white tables.
  • Taste-wise, the food was more or less on par with Crystal Jade, perhaps a little under for one or 2 items. However, I did feel the portion size of the Tunglook Signatures dim sum dishes to be significantly smaller than the Crystal Jade ones.

It’s not bad dim sum that they serve, it’s just that for the same price, I think I can get a better deal elsewhere. Royal China would be another such place I would rather go to.
